...Business Correspondence Topic: Types of audience, purpose of communication and writing. Audience Audience generally refers to a listening, reading or viewing public. It is important to determine the level of education and understanding that our audience has about the subject of our communication. Are we addressing experts in the field of our subject, or lay people? Generally, audiences can be classified into three categories; they are the "lay" audience, the "managerial" audience, and the "experts." The "lay" audiences are people with no special or little knowledge. They are usually clueless and need background information; they need more definition and description; and they may want attractive graphics or visuals to help them know better and learn more. The "managerial” audiences are people that have more knowledge than the “lay” audience about the subject, but they need more detailed and expert knowledge so they can make a decision about the issue. Any background information, facts, statistics needed to make a decision should be highlighted. The "experts" audiences are people that are the most knowledgeable compared to the “lay” and “managerial” audiences. However, they may be the most demanding audience in terms of knowledge, presentation, and graphics or visuals. Experts are often "theorists" or "practitioners." How do you determine your audience? Writers determine their audience types by considering: * Who they are (age, sex, education, economic...

...publishing house. You can write and edit documents, and print them. With DTP software, you can generally do a much better job, and use the proper typography. Bear in mind that DTP software is designed for you to print something, and give away the printed material. It’s rarely suitable to give away the DTP files, as they’re typically reliant on the configuration of your own personal computer. If you want to exchange fancy document files with people, you’re better off using a format more suited to that sort of thing; like HTML on the world wide web, PDF (Portable Document Format) for more general purpose situations (it’s prime focus is to make documents printable on different systems in a consistent manner), or RTF (Rich Text Format) documents for when you want to exchange electronic documents between different computer systems, and need something a bit better than just plain text. Desktop Publisher is a small-scale equivalent of a printing press on a personal computer. Whereas a word processor is chiefly aimed at being something that can produce a document, “desktop publishing” is about laying out things on pages (it may be a single document, it could be several separate articles in a single publication, and can include images and diagrams). You have full control over what's printed on a page, where it's printed, how it's printed, and how printing is handled over multiple pages (e.g. articles that span different pages, the layout of an entire magazine or book, etc.). Generally...

...Cover Letters While your resume is a summary of your credentials, your cover letter should essentially be a sales pitch. Your aim is to demonstrate why your skills and your background make a perfect match for the position you're applying for. The cover letter is not the place to summarize your background--you have already done this in your resume. Remember, employers typically receive hundreds of resumes for each job opening. You must stand out from other job seekers in a positive way. The best way to distinguish yourself is to highlight one or two of your accomplishments or abilities that show you are an above-average candidate for this position. Stressing only one or two unique attributes will increase your chances of being remembered by the recruiter and getting to the interview stage, where you can elaborate on the rest of your accomplishments. You can also gain an extra edge by showing that you have some specific knowledge about the company and industry. This shows that your are genuinely interested in the job you are applying for--and that you are not blindly sending out hundreds of resumes. More importantly, the employer will view your interest as an indication that you are likely to stay with the company for a substantial period of time if you are hired. 10 Key Details to Remember When to send a cover letter: always mail a cover letter with your resume. Even if you are following up an advertisement that reads simply "send resume," be sure to include...

...always struggled with my writing skills. Be that as it may, this class was exactly what I needed to build confidence in my writing. I have discovered many things during this class that I will carry with me while on my journey to obtaining a degree from UMUC. The three most important ones I will be taking away are the proper usage of verb tense throughout my essays, how to come up with and support my thesis, and finally being able to properly alter the tone of my paper effectively based on my audience. Growing up, grammar was never exactly my strongest forte. Throughout my time spent in school I always struggled with the basics of verbs and adjectives, sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Anything and everything with grammar was a hassle for me. For this reason, the fear of writing followed me into college. For example, while writing my initial essay I struggled from beginning to end to use the right verb tense. I was constantly going back and forth from past tense to present tense, and I never noticed it until the professor corrected me on it. Fortunately, when the time came around for my second essay, I was well aware of the issue and was able to use the proper verb tense. For example, I exchanged “am” for the word “was” to take it from present to past tense. Along with that, I also picked up on the ability to use transitional phrases, to my benefit. A lesson in ComFit “The Five Main Categories of Transitional Words and Phrases” definitely helped me understand this technique...

...pre-kindergarten Kayla has struggled academically and emotionally. I had the opportunity to look at her binder from past years and it is evident that Kayla has a difficult time writing numbers and letters and putting words together. It seems like Kayla has not fully developed fine motor skills such as holding a pencil the proper way. It is stated that, “By the age of 7, children begin to form letters of uniform height and space and to use lowercase letters.” (Meece and Daniels) An aspect of writing that Kayla struggles with each day. If she writes a sentence she puts random letters together sometimes the letters are just lines going in different directions. In her drawings from kindergarten she drew people with sad faces and dark places. It was appalling to see this. Compare to her classmates she seems to draw on the dark side. I asked her if she could explain to me what her drawings meant to her. She said that sometimes she does not want to live because her classmates and her family do not love her. A part of me felt frustrated and angry. By observing the class I saw that her Classmates treated her differently. When I asked one of the girls in the class Arleen why she treats her differently she responded, “No one likes her because she bothers, does not know how to behave and she is crazy.” Kayla is aware of how her peers feel and asked her mother to give her more medication to control herself. She told me that it was hard for her to...
