Background:
HMAS Sydney, a Perth Class light cruiser was the Royal Australia Navy’s fighting force being the most resourceful element of the initial Australia fleet unit. Sydney along with its sister ships Perth and Hobart were British modified Leander class light cruiser acquire immediately after the beginning of WWII. Sydney had a successful amount of missions however, on return from a voyage the ship encountered the HSK Kormoran disguised as a Dutch merchant vessel that appeared incompetent at returning Sydney’s signals. HMAS Sydney was deceived and ultimately unaware of the ships true nature resulting in the Sydney to approach the vessel at close range where her advanced and superior armament was not able to perform to its full capability. HSK Kormoran utilising their disguise was able to bring Sydney alongside at a range where their weapons systems were at full capability, where they used all its armament to sink the Sydney. HMAS Sydney retaliated however, the HSK Kormoran fire power was to extensive for HMAS Sydney; Sydney sank off the coast of Sharks Bay, Western Australia located 12 nautical miles from the sunken wreck of the German cruiser where both wrecks were not found for 6 years, recently discovered in 2008.
