1. What ethnic groups live in the neighborhoods bordering hull house? Are they representative of the major groups immigrating to the United States at the beginning of the twelfth century?
The Hull House has indefinitely helped various ethnic groups live and grow communities in Chicago helping them contribute to the ethnic and religious diversity in Chicago. Some of the ethnic groups that still live in the area surrounding Hull House today are Italians, Germans, Bohemians, Canadian-French, and Russian Jews. In the City of Chicago today, there still are thousands of immigrants that live in the thirty block area of the Hull House.
These groups were definitely among the majority that immigrated to the US in the early twelfth century. To this day, they are spread throughout the city. If we were to go south of Twelfth Street, there are many German, Polish, and Russian Jews that still live in that area. In the northwest side of Hull House live many French Canadians, and then if were to go North of that area there are many Irish and first-generation Americans who live there. 2. What are characteristics of most of the housing described here?
Housing in the Hull House neighborhood was in very harsh conditions. The establishment of this was the beginning of revolution in “slums” of the city. There was a lot of dirt on the streets which really was dangerous, there were not enough schools for the children, and the streets were in miserable conditions. There was not a sewer system and hundreds of houses in those communities were not connected to the sewers
However, the Hull House itself was a very nice building in the middle of the slums. As an elegant piece of architecture, the Hull house had each corner of Halsted covered with its building. In addition, the building featured a gym and a museum. 3. What is Jane Addams’ opinion of the job government was doing in addressing the living conditions of the immigrants? Jane Addams opinion of the job the government was doing in addressing the living condition of the immigrants was a very poor job. She believed and argued that if immigrants received education and guidance, they would be able to live like Americans and become very good members of the community. Instead, they are being neglected in society, not being given the proper education and guidance required in order to succeed.
Addams also believed that immigrants were very good for America. Although they were ignorant to their duties in society, they were very hard working. After the beginning of Hull House, Addams started a campaign against the sweatshops and for better working conditions. In addition, Addams worked hard to ensure that immigrant children were not employed in such sweatshops. All of these were some of the many things that Addams did to address the living conditions of immigrants. 4. In what ways are the descriptions given here typical of many large cities in 1911?

The descriptions given here are of many typical large cities in 1911 because of the growing population that was happening. Cities like Chicago, New York, and Boston were becoming very congested. Immigrants from all around the world were coming to find opportunities they would have. Dirty streets, sanitary issues, bad lighting, and sewer systems had become major problems for big cities including Chicago. Some areas were a little bit maintained, but if you went to other areas they were not maintained at all.
Immigrants of that time really experienced difficulties as far as having a clean neighborhood to live. Jane Addams also helped in conditions like this. While serving at hull house she had a garbage incinerator installed, there were brutal conditions and rats running around where children played. A major accomplishment of James Addams was also that she that was the first garbage inspector in the City of Chicago. While doing the job she had requested the city to build a sewer system as well because of the major problems of garbage and rubbish on the streets.

Various forms of analysis reveal that this form of settlement is based in the Near West Side of Chicago in Illinois [1]. This form of settlement opened its doors to the various forms of newly arriving Europeans immigrants. Over numerous years, Hull House had the capabilities of attracting some of the brightest women in the nation. However, the residents were able to form the network of reformers who use to operate at the state, national and local levels. Besides that Adams a, Starr, Julia Lathrop, Alice Hamilton and Sophonisba Breckenridge used to reside in that form of settlement scheme[2]. In their stay at the Hull, House women began carrying out various forms of activities such as sociological studies of the nearby conditions with an aim of developing sociology as a field. However, various forms of reformers were able to set out various forms of programs that were used to address the poor working environments, low wages, poor sanitations, malnutrition among other problems. This led to the emergence of a class of reformers who began to agitate for the passing of reform legislations[3]. By doing this, the women were in a good...

...As a result of the gained popularity of Hull House there were many rumors that were begging to flourish not only in the immediate community but also reaching a wider audience. Many reported that there were ghosts and spooks in the abandoned mansion that was purchased by Addams and Starr, however the largest fabrication spread was one about a supposed “Devil Baby” that supposedly could be seen from an attic window when walking down the street. This story was made very public in the fall of 1913, there were several versions of this tale and each had interpretations of their own. The Italian and the Jewish renditions of the story were the ones that were predominantly spoken of not only in Chicago but also as far as Milwaukee. It seemed that this...

Jane Addams, Excerpts from Twenty Years at Hull-House (1911)

...In Twenty Years at Hull-House (1911), Jane Addams writes about immigrants from a different perspective; in her social work at a settlement house in Chicago, Addams lived and worked among immigrants. Addams describes immigrants as people who have come to America ignorant of their duties to society, but who nonetheless have potential. She argues that with education and guidance, immigrants can be taught to live like Americans and become contributing members of American society. Her vision is an example of the "melting pot" model for accommodating immigrants. Twenty Years at Hull-House's having been a bestseller indicates that Addams' views were popular with the American public. Hull-House once stood in the suburbs, but the city has steadily grown up around it and its site now has corners on three or four foreign colonies. Between Halsted Street and the river live about ten thousand Italians--Neapolitans, Sicilians, and Calabrians, with an occasional Lombard or Venetian. To the south on Twelfth Street are many Germans, and side streets are given over almost entirely to Polish and Russian Jews. Still farther south, these Jewish colonies merge into a huge Bohemian colony, so vast that Chicago ranks as the third Bohemian city in the world. To the northwest are many Canadian-French, clannish in spite of their long residence in America, and to the north are Irish and first-generation Americans. On the streets directly west and farther north are well-to-do English-speaking families, many...

How Humans treat animals, especially in America. I really enjoyed reading this essay. Being a vegetarian I am really impressed by the author’s writing. Wallace is not telling people to become vegetarians or vegans. Many people think lobster don’t have brain so they don’t feel pain. Wallace states that “It is difficult not to sense that they're unhappy, or frightened, even if it's some rudimentary version of these feelings,” showing his knowledge of...

...can celebrate those that have fought for racial freedoms then why can’t we not celebrate a woman who has stood up for the poor and provide them with a means for an equal quality of life. Hence, I am proposing that we set aside a day to recognize the countless achievements of Jane Adams, a woman who helped the children and women of the poor neighborhood. She served to be a beacon of hope and light to women and children during a time when they didn't seem to have any. Without her, women were not able to get well educated, children would not have kindergarten, and young adults would not have a boys and girls club. The greatest of Jane Addam achievement was starting the Hull House which not only a shelter but also an educational establishment for those who lived in the urban immigrant parts of Chicago. This house...

Leadership

...through their ambition, ideas, influence, persistence, confidence, and strength in empowering others. Oprah is a good example of a leader simply for her ambition and ability to positively impact peoples’ lives. Although she does not have a specific role as a leader, Oprah has many qualities of one. Her ability to reach out to others plays a huge role in her success. Being the host of her own talk show certainly helps with that. As a leader, it is important to have ambition. Without the desire to get things done, nothing will actually get done. A leader without ambition is like a football game without running. Jane Addams, another prominent American female, was a reformer and a women’s rights activist. She co-founded the first Hull House in Chicago (nobelprize.org, 2014). This proves her to be a good leader by showing that she has helpful ideas. A leader needs to be someone who can come up with original solutions to a group’s problems, as demonstrated by Jane Addams. Because she lived in a time where women were simply supposed to be housewives, her work is even more substantial. Jennifer Lawrence also displays many leadership skills. It is not enough just to produce good ideas. A leader must empower others, and empowerment comes from self-confidence. Jennifer Lawrence...

She earned her degree in 1888. After realizing that she would be limited to only teaching positions, she moved to be with her family in Washington, DC where her father served his role in Congress. She eventually accepted a faculty teaching position during a time she described as confused. Like most young professionals now-a-days, Breckinridge was yearning for more and felt that her current position was not her calling. She left after becoming really ill. In correspondence written to her colleagues, she seemed disgruntled and describes her days spent keeping house and teaching her sister as meager and that she was doing nothing. Her dream was to become a lawyer, and she was doing nothing close to that. Her father was a lawyer and had a successful practice and was supportive of her dream. Her plans were again placed on hold after the death of her mother. Further prolonging her pursuit of her dream was a scandal that involved her father and an alleged mistress. Caring for the family and the hoopla that ensued because of the trial took an emotional toll on Breckinridge. During one of her visits to Wellesley, she was offered a fellowship in...

...General Arangmenrt plan Hydrostatic calculation Route Objective Limitation Crosscuve of stability process Scantling When a new ship is designed, one of the primary steps involved in the development of the concept, is designing its General Arrangement and allocating proper spaces according to the requirements of the owner and functionality of the ship. It is up to the naval architect to decide on the ship’s general arrangement, depending on many design constraints that are mentioned in the technical specifications of the contract. Since almost all ships have something unique in their general arrangement, there is no specific procedure with rules stated for the same. But in spite of that, a naval architect needs to know the basic procedure to follow in order to come down to an optimum design. In this article, we shall discuss a general procedure that is followed in the ship designing industry. The General Arrangement, or GA as it is commonly called, is a drawing created by a naval architect. The purpose of this drawing is for space allocation, to ensure that everything that an owner wants in a vessel will actually fit. The GA consists of (at a minimum) a plan view of each major deck of the vessel, shows all of the watertight and structural bulkheads, as well as joiner bulkheads. All of the furniture is typically shown or in early stages the furniture and large items to be on the vessel are roughly blocked in. Passageways, stairwells and all equipment vital to the ships...
