Hurricane Katrina Film Analysis

When the Levees Broke, the lock holding back the truth about racism in America broke and left many questioning their status: human or animal. The four-part documentary captures the struggles of mostly black citizens in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina hit. One of the most noticeable differences between Katrina’s black and white victims is that the white citizens were able to escape or ended up better off than their black counterparts in general. For example, a white woman and a white boy with his family were filmed having a trailer given to them by Fema. None of the black citizens of New Orleans were shown to live in a trailer or have anything close to it. The main question that should be asked here is “Why did every black citizen questioned …show more content…
The president was more involved with helping oversea countries with their problems rather than aiding people in his own country. Some of the issues he ignored at home were that the people of New Orleans were being treated like chattel and had to overcome several hate crimes inflicted on them by white men. For example, many of them were crammed into unsanitary shelters, given subpar food and were ultimately separated from their families. Hundreds of them died under circumstances that echoed the slave trade boat system. Even if they tried to evacuate to a nearby city to escape the horrors of their city’s “help”, they were met with the bullet of a white man’s gun. Some people tried to make excuses and say that it again wasn’t about race, but then why weren’t people of color trying to keep their own “kind” in. If that isn’t sickening enough, the president tried to use visual politics to make himself look good by lighting up a building in the New Orleans area. Then, he decides to film a statement in front of it to subtly show that the government is making efforts to help hurricane victims with reconstruction. The only reason the president started to take New Orleans more seriously was when people started calling him out for and accusing him of being racist. For instance, Kanye West’s statement: “Bush doesn’t care about black people” must have hit home in some way because after he seemed oddly interested in helping

The Case for, or Against New Orleans

...Jason Coleman 06-11-12 New Orleans Recommendation Paper The Case For, or Against, New Orleans Management Decision Models B6025 Dr. Usha Dasari We will look at many factors in our case for rebuilding or not rebuilding New Orleans. This recommendation will be reviewed by state and local governments for their decision. We will perform a Cost-Benefit Analysis which will represent the residents of New Orleans, the residents of the surrounding floods plains, the Mayor of New Orleans, and the federal government represented by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the taxpayers. We will look at scenario models, risk management, and decision trees to support our decisions and analysis. This natural disaster took an enormous toll on the residents of New Orleans. Over 1200 lives were lost and countless injuries were suffered. The loss of revenue from the shutdown of businesses, loss of homes and possessions of residents caused much pain and human suffering. We will conclude with an executive summary which will summarize our decision for or against rebuilding of New Orleans. Prior to the hurricane New Orleans was a tourism magnet. The city offered many restaurants, festivals, and great weather. These positives made tourism a thriving market. Other boons for the economy of New Orleans were the mining, transportation, and warehousing along its waterways. More products came through this port than any other port in the world. There are many colleges in the area than add...

Famous Mathematician

...The Case Analysis of the American Red Cross For this project, I select the American Red Cross (ARC). The ARC, founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, is an independent organization, supported by public donations and volunteerism. As a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the ARC joins more than 175 other national societies in bringing aid to victims of disasters throughout the world. All Red Cross societies must conform to seven fundamental bylaws: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. I selected this case because the American Red Cross primary goal is to assist others, which is something I enjoy. The ARC mission is to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. I believe helping others allows an individual to use their talents and skills to assist someone who is in need. The organization is important to the United States and the world. It offers food and aid to foreign countries and also ranks as a leader in the nursing, health and safety fields. It provides medical services as well as morale boosting services to the American armed forces. It also serves an important function as the nation’s foremost blood collection agency. The ARC responds to more than 70,000 disasters. However, the ways in which it handled the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and the Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were widely...

Prior to selecting this research paper topic the only knowledge that I had of natural gas is that it is an affordable energy source that was used by many families. Growing up in rural Louisiana my parents had a natural gas oven and heaters. My brother actually still uses the natural gas in my parents old home. My parents’ home now is totally electric and my mother complains about the utility bill and the slow cooking speed with electric. Those complaints seem so minute after learning about the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. When first giving the list of research paper topics, the worldwide natural gas market and fracking were not on my list of topic options. However, due to my procrastination on choosing one of my first...

Super Bowl Week Analysis

...The Academy Awards, or "Oscars", is an annual American awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements in the United States film industry as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. The winner of each category is awarded a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known as an "Oscar." The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and is now held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. (Academy of Motion Picture and Science, 2016) (Esseux, 1999) Held in February and next premiering on February 26, 2017, award shows have several properties that make them noteworthy for sociological analysis and impact. Awards serve as tournament rituals that serve to define their field. The professions that constitute fields use awards to define their aspirational standard to show what sort of things the field ought to be doing. A nomination has a pervasive impact on an actor’s career, “contributing to their visibility in the film industry through the immense exposure and publicity that follows” (Levy 1987:69). Winning an Oscar can dramatically increase the fees a previously obscure Hollywood worker can demand. This event increases status for actors through association with other high status actors,...

A Real New Princess Analysis

...one of the most popular media outlets to kids and adults from around the world. It has produced multiple movies based on princesses from different cultures and nationalities. These royalties come from around the world; For instance, Cinderella, Belle, and Snow White are from central Europe, Jasmine epitomizes the Arabian princess, Pocahontas the Native American one and finally Mulan the Chinese princess. In 2009, the movie The Princess and the Frog introduced Tiana, the first black / African-American princess, to the Disney kingdom. On the surface, the denotative meaning presents the animated film as a promoter of equality and feminism. They portray women in an optimistic and encouraging image of strength, will, and power. However, once it is really scrutinized down to the connotative meaning and specific details, we can notice lots of controversies and stereotypes. The following analysis will present the differentiation of genders, races, and classes in the movie The Princess and the Frog. The movie is centered on a young hard working African American waitress named Tiana. Ever since she was a little girl, she shared her father’s dream of opening up her own restaurant “Tiana’s Palace”. She crosses path with an arrogant, careless frog who claims to be Prince Naveen of Maldonia. Actually, Naveen was transformed into a frog by a devious voodoo magician named Dr. Facilier. In order to return human, similarly to the children novel, Naveen supposed that he should kiss a princess. Assuming...

Critique on 'an Inconvenient Truth'

...AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH is the 2006 Academy Award winning documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim about former United States Vice President Al Gore's campaign to educate citizens about global warming via a comprehensive slide show that, by his own estimate made in the film, he has given more than a thousand times. The film highlights Al Gore’s efforts to spread out the seriousness regarding Global Warming and Climate Change i.e. how we humans have brought this upon us by increasing CO2 emissions and how our situation can be improved. He first highlights the vulnerability of the Earth’s Atmospheric Shell which is being filled with pollution and is so thin that we’re capable of changing its composition. As said by him “The sun's radiation comes in the form of light waves and that heats up the Earth. And then some of the radiation that is absorbed and warms the Earth is reradiated back into space in the form of infrared radiation. And some of the outgoing infrared radiation is trapped by this layer of atmosphere and held inside the atmosphere. And that's a good thing because it keeps the temperature of the Earth within certain boundaries, keeps it relatively constant and livable. But the problem is this thin layer of atmosphere is being thickened by all of the global warming pollution that’s being put up there. And what that does is it thickens this layer of atmosphere” He explains using an animated video (on watching which even a layman would understand what...

...Unlearning Deficit Ideology and the Scornful Gaze: Thoughts on Authenticating the Class Discourse in Education Paul C. Gorski Founder, EdChange Assistant Professor, Integrative Studies George Mason University http://www.EdChange.org gorski@EdChange.org December 2010 Unlearning Deficit Ideology and the Scornful Gaze 2 It is popular in the education milieu today to talk about the dangers of assuming a deficit perspective, approaching students based upon our perceptions of their weaknesses rather than their strengths. Such a perspective deteriorates expectations for students and weakens educators’ abilities to recognize giftedness in its various forms (Ford & Grantham, 2003). The most devastating brand of this sort of deficit thinking emerges when we mistake difference—particularly difference from ourselves— for deficit. If one concentrates best while sitting still it may be difficult to imagine that somebody else—a student or colleague, perhaps—concentrates more effectively while pacing or tapping a pencil. Similarly, if one always has lived among people who speak a certain language variation, such as what people commonly refer to as “standard English,” she or he might mistake somebody’s use of a different variation, such as the Appalachian variety spoken by my grandmother, as an indication of intellectual inferiority or, worse, deviance (Collins, 1988). Over the past ten or so years a critical discourse challenging the deficit perspective has emerged among educators....

Starbucks

...Starbucks has been opening its doors to millions of people for coffee, but it is more than the overpriced coffee that brings people in day after day. Starbucks offers a unique ambiance, friendly and helpful baristas to assist customers in any concerns they might have with the coffee or service. People buy Starbucks for what it represents and the status symbol that comes along with it. What makes Starbucks unique from its competitors and how does its marketing strategy tick? Background It all started when Gerald Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Ziev Siegl opened its first Seattle coffee shop in 1971. Since then, Starbucks Coffee Company established itself as the leader in the coffee industry with continuous market growth and expansion.  With 17, 003 stores in 58 countries, the company’s main objective is to establish Starbucks as the “most recognized and respected brand in the world.” (Starbucks, 2011) Currently, Starbucks is relying on retail expansion, product innovation, and service innovation to achieve a long-term goal once set by current chairman Howard Schultz: “The idea was to create a chain of coffeehouses that would become America’s “third place.” At the time, most Americans had two places in their lives – home and work. But I believed that people needed another place, a place where they could go to relax and enjoy others, or just be by themselves. I envisioned a place that would be separate from home or work, a place that would...

In 2008, Wal-Mart will provide employees with $4 co-payments for 2,400 generic drugs and will offer health insurance with monthly premiums as low as $5 to $8. "The non-unionized Wal-Mart has taken a lot of heat on health care, including a custom-made bill in Maryland and copycat bills in other states mandating 'pay or play' rules for employee health coverage," noted Diana Ernst, a health care policy fellow at the Pacific Research Institute in San Francisco. "The company's new plan, however, has drawn praise from even its biggest critics." According to a mid-September news release by the company, "Associates will now have more than 50 ways of customizing their health care coverage options, which will allow them to select various deductibles, health care credits [which enable employees to visit doctors and purchase prescription drugs without paying anything out of pocket], and premiums, depending...
