Have you ever invited a friend over to your home only to be asked the now all to familiar question “do you have Wi-Fi?”. Most people assume that Wi-Fi and the Internet are one and the same when in fact they are quite different. The term Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity is used to describe a standardized wireless local network. The common day Wi-Fi is used to connect computers, cell phones, tablets, and even T.V.’s to a consumers’ internet connection, making setup quick and easy. While the current day Wi-Fi systems typically contain hardware using many patents, Vic Hayes is credited with establishing the 802.11 standards in 1997 (inventors.about.com).

The original Wi-Fi systems typically reached speeds of 1-2 Mbps which was more than enough for its intended purpose. The newer standard, 802.11ac is capable of reaching speeds of up to 100Gbps which is quite a feat. Even though the Wi-Fi technology has greatly improved there is one big problem in the U.S. (and most of the world) when it comes to the average residential user and that is the Internet speeds available to the consumer. While you may be more than satisfied with your internet connection, you should know that the U.S. ranked 25th out of the top 194 countries worldwide for average internet connection speed.(“PC Magazine”) The irony of this is completely overlooked by so many of the average consumers. As previously mentioned, a study done by Ookla rated the U.S. 25th out of 194 with a national average download speed of only 29Mbps(“PC Magazine”). The download speeds can differ greatly in different regions or even as close as one side of a city to the other dependent on local ISPs or Internet Service Providers. The reason this is a factor is due to the fact that the cost for this speed can range from $41 up to $60 a month (NY Times). One major ISP in the U.S. is Comcast and they do offer “business class” internet for the home user with prices up to $300 month for a connection of up to 100 Mbps (NY Times). With high internet prices and low internet speeds many consumers look to new hardware for speed increases, hardware like wireless routers to give them an edge with their wireless devices which includes computers. While there are many things like Netflix and other movie streaming subscriptions that can bog down a cheap wireless router most consumers can’t come close to maxing out their router due to their low internet subscription speed. Uneducated gamers and computer enthusiasts often spend the most money on things like their wireless routers for performance gains and of course for good old fashioned bragging rights. These are the same internet users with 29Mbps download speeds.

Now that we have a few facts stated and we have a good understanding of the fundamentals we can discuss the irony and pointlessness of the upcoming Wi-Fi standard (802.11ad) for the average user. There is no doubt that the breakthroughs in WLAN ( wireless Local area network) technology can be a great help to businesses, it is unnecessary for the home user. The 802.11ad standard can theoretically connect at up to 100Gbps as previously stated which is much faster than most ISP’s currently offer to even the most valued customer. This means that consumers will buy wireless routers with the 802.11ac standard expecting a faster more enjoyable internet experience only to be disappointed with the same slow internet they started with and a new unnecessary piece of hardware. So despite the fact that most people only have an internet connection of 25Mps they continue to spend up to $300.00 for a new router that has transfer speeds up to 100Gbps. Although more and more items in the average person’s home are coming with Wi-Fi support, many of items use a very small amount of bandwidth and not very often at that. This leaves the consumer with an amazingly fast wireless local network that hits a bottleneck when the data gets to the consumers modem or internet connection. This would be like of buying a corvette to deliver newspapers. While you get the bragging rights for the new equipment, most people will never fully use the 802.11ad system which at the very least should achieve speeds of up to 7Gbps (Wi-Fi.org).
So is the new Wi-Fi standard a total waste of time? Of course not, it would be a great addition to allot of small businesses and consumers with multiple computers who often use some form of file sharing. It could also be a great addition to a home where the internet service provider offered a higher than normal speed allowing the user to take full advantage of the new technologies advantages. However for the average user with the good old internet speeds of 25Mps or less there really is no need to purchase the new 802.11ac equipped systems.
So until our country’s ISPs decide to offer better internet speeds to the average consumer the newer Wi-Fi technologies advantages will remain well out of range of the everyday gamer, video streamer, and simple internet browser. It should also be mentioned that even the fastest internet offered to residential customers is very expensive and most people are unwilling to pay the price for a 100Mbps internet connection which is still nowhere near the 100Gbps offered by the new standard. For now it seems that the only reason for the residential users to purchase a wireless 802.11ac router or receiver is to boast to friends and enemies.

His Coy Mistress

...poem start to talk about how much this girl means to this perticular man. The main character in the poem talks about how he will wait forever to be with her. He mentions that “We would sit down and think which way To walk and pass our long love’s day.” (st. 3-4) His views as of now are that he wants to take his time and he doesn’t have go anywhere. This man certainly wants to plan things out so that it will be perfect. Another line from the poem that makes him the gentleman that he is portraying to be is “An hundred years should go to praise Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze. “(st.13-14) I think he is saying that we will give praise to her eyes that are so magnificent. Her eyes are so beautiful, because of which he will praise them for hundred years before they can truly be together. Later on it mentions that he will praise her breast each for two hundred years. The mood is set that this man certainly wants to be with this woman. He is telling her how he feels and wants her to understand that he really wants to be with her. In the next twelve lines we begin to see a bit of difference in the attitude. As of now the guy is thinking, well maybe we don’t have enough time to sit around and wait. The chariot’s of time is pointed out by saying that it is hurrying near. Maybe we don’t have enough time anymore. We should hurry up and get with it. “Thy beauty shall no more be found, Nor, in thy marble vault shall sound.”(st. 25-26) I imagine that he is telling...

Filipino Values(Aldub)

...FILIPINO VALUES (REACTION PAPER) Submitted by: Paula Nicole M. Escandor Submitted to: Prof. Lilibeth Cortez We Filipinos, almost all of us know about the hit noontime TV show Eat bulaga’s Kalyeserye, Especially the new love team, “AlDub” they’re known not just for their undeniably strong chemistry and the sweetness overload, but also because of the good values that their showing, the Filipino values we used to have, that’s actually fading slowly from now. The reality is, most of us nowadays forgot the traditional values, the proper ways. One of those is the way of courtship. Man courting a girl usually nowadays they don’t take it seriously, some just for fun, most doesn’t even know what courtship is and how it’s being done, when is the right time and age, for someone to know about this. But no, nowadays even kids who’s just an elementary students are hurrying their way to this stage, courting a girl from his age when he doesn’t even have any idea what’s really the meaning behind courtship. Some, just want to get a girlfriend, waiting is not on their list. Girls, gets easily fooled by a guy’s sweet words eventhough there’s really no meaning behind it. They easily get attached, not minding what the guy could do for them or if the guy is capable of protecting us. Girls nowadays aren’t conservative at all. In the Kalyeserye, they just don’t show us those love thingy, but the respect is there. We Filipinos are also known for being respectful, especially on someone older than...

The Deconstruction of Waiting for Go Dot

...Deconstruction is a mode of interpretation which works by a careful and cautious entering of each layer within the story: “ The deconstructive critic seeks to find the thread in the text in question which will unravel it all or the loose stone which will pull down the whole building”. Deconstructive literary criticism uses binary oppositions. Binary oppositions can be defined as “ a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning.” “Waiting for Godot”, a classic of modern theatre, is a tragicomedy in two acts which tells the story of two men, Vladimir and Estragon, who are waiting to meet a man named Godot. By using deconstructive literary criticism, the play can be analyzed threw the following binary oppositions: passive/active hopelessness/hope, forgetfulness/remembrance and staying/going. Vladimir and Estragon are in a constant state of waiting for Godot: “Nothing to be done. / I'm beginning to come round to that opinion."(Waiting for Godot). Although they are being passive they try to occupy themselves while waiting for Godot. Derrida states that in binary oppositions there is a unspoken hierarchy in which the first term functions as superior to the second term which is considered inferior: “ Derrida’s procedure is to invert the hierarchy in which the first term functions as privileged and superior and the second term as derivative and inferior. By showing that the primary term can be made out to be derivative from or a special case of the secondary term”...

...Fed Signals No Hurry to Raise Interest Rate The article “Fed Signals No Hurry to Raise Interest Rate” was published on September 17, 2014 by The New York Times and written by Binyamin Appelbaum. Binyamin Appelbaum, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He has previously worked for the Florida Times Union, the Charlotte Observer, the Boston Globe, and The Washington Post. While working at the Charlotte Observer, he led a team of reporters to investigate the sales practices of Beazer Homes USA, one of the largest homebuilders in the United States. The Observer's reporting led to FBI, IRS, SEC, and HUD investigations of Beazer Homes, which has since stopped making mortgage loans nationwide. In this article, Mr. Appelbaum describes that the Federal Reserve is in no hurry to raise the interest rates even though the economy recovery has been improving these recent months. The article explains that according to the central bank’s chairwoman Janet L. Yellen, one of the main reasons interest rates have not increased is because “there are still too many people who want jobs but cannot find them, too many who are working part time but would prefer full-time work, and too many who are not searching for a job would be if the labor market was stronger”. In addition, a recent government report offered a reminder that the economy still remains weak. The Federal Reserve favors a 2 percent annual inflation rate as the strongest pace for the economy, but inflation measured...

Horror Story

...The text message “Hurry up hurry up! We are getting late to school Alice!” said my sister. Oh, God! I just wanted to stay under the duvet for a little longer. But after two minutes I could hear my sister telling mum that I was still in bed, so I had to get up. I took a t-shirt and a pair of jeans from the wardrobe. I’m one of those who don’t care about how I look. That’s the big difference between me and my sister. I am so different and sometimes I feel like I don’t belong to this family. When I finally decided to go down to the kitchen I realized that I forgot to tell my mum that I wouldn’t be for dinner today. She is going to freak out! Well, I got to the kitchen and mum had already made breakfast. Toast and egg, my favorite dish! Jessie was talking with mum about some Halloween-costumes, pumpkins and candy for the children. I had never been interested in Halloween and when I was younger I always had to invent some excuses, so I didn’t have to go out. I ate very fast and I didn’t say a word during the breakfast. When I finished, I took my school bag and went to school on my bike. On the way to school I got a text message on my cell phone. I stopped to read it. “Be careful… I’m after you! Something is going to happen this night” Who is it from, secret number? Hah! I am shore it is Jessie trying to scare me. When I finally got to school I put my bike in the shed and ran into my classroom. My English teacher was already there. The door was closed and I was two minutes late...

...You don't even have to get out of your car. It looks like fast food, smells like fast food, and tastes like fast food. The only thing that is different is that you never have to get out of your car. Thats because they wait on you, just like a sit down place. Fast food in the future will offer better food, window side service, and a more diverse menu. This is how it works, when you drive in, they take your order using a drive through speaker. Then, you wait a few moments and then your order is at your window. Once the food is ready, waiters on roller skates will bring it right to your car. If you need anything, you press the call button an a a waiter appears at your window. This is a superior way to serve customer's because it's faster and offers better service. Second, food quality at a sit down restaurant is much higher, but it is often too expensive. This modern fast food restaurant would be a great cross between a sit down place and a fast food joint. You have the service of a sit down place, but with fast yummy food. The food would be a step above regular fast food. Better quality burgers, fries, etc. Last, this place would be flexible, great if you are in a hurry. Just drive up, order and drive away. Also, there is no line to wait in, you can take all the time in the word to decide what you are going to order. All in all, a flexible restaurant is the...

Classification Essay Drivers

...The Erratic Driver, the Over Cautious Driver, and the Alert Driver. There is the Erratic Driver, this type of driver can seem to be fairly unpredictable on the road, with their tailgating and speeding, this person is the most hazardous to themselves and other travelers. Then there is the Over Cautious Driver, who is just as easy to spot as the Erratic Driver. They are normally going under the speed limit or close to it, this type of driver will slow up traffic, and in highly congested areas, they can be a hazard on the road from hesitating and not flowing well with the traffic. Finally, there is the Alert Driver, this type of driving style consists of paying attention to the surroundings, such as weather, potholes, and other traffic. The Erratic Driver: Has a tendency of pissing off other drivers, with their erratic and unpredictable actions. They can be 100 yards behind you one second, and the next second they're so close that you can't read their license plate. They seem to always be in a hurry, whether they actually are in a hurry or not doesn't matter, the erratic driver is not a safe driver. Here's a tip from a recovering lead foot, you can't control other drivers, so pull your foot off the pedal, you can only affect your share of the road. Driving the speed limits will save you fines, and insurance hikes, and it will help you go with the flow of traffic. The Over Cautious Driver: This type of driver also has the tendency to frustrate other drivers, especially the erratic...

Compare/Contrast Essay

...Fast Food vs. Fine Dining When hungry and in a hurry a lot of people will choose fast food over a fine dining restaurant. Fast food is all around us and sometimes just easier and less time consuming to get. I think here in bullhead there is a fast food restaurant within every 5 miles in any direction you drive on highway 95. Other types of restaurants (sit down dine-ins, Fine Dining) are scarce and there are only a handful of those in our area. Depending On how you feel and the free time that you have, here are some suggestions to help you decide between grabbing a bite to eat at a fast food restaurant or a diner. To start off I am going to say that they both have acceptable food. There should never be a time when a person is unhappy with their meal. You are paying for it of course. However fast food is mostly frozen. This allows places to simply heat up or finish cooking food and have it served in no time. You do get what you paid for and sometimes fast food is inexpensive. Fine dining on the other hand isn't. Typically in a fine dining restaurant the food is of higher quality, fresh, and the wait time is longer. Both have good customer service just on different levels. In fast food you enter the building, order, seat yourself then get your ticket called out. If you are in a hurry there's even drive throughs. On the contrary to fast dining when you enter a higher end establishment you get seated and handed a menu. There is a waiter there to take down your drink. Waiters...

Because I Could Not Stop for Death

...me", she’s not ready to die but accepts the fact that it is a natural thing that happens to all human beings, and comes at its own time, no matter what you are doing or where you are it will come and take you, to which she seems content with. She personifies death as if it was a kind gentleman, or her groom that comes to pick her up and take her away in his carriage on a pleasant ride; she also realizes that ironically someone else is riding along with them, Immortality—looking at it in a positive way. It is also interesting to point out how she separates death from immortality, when she says “The carriage held but just ourselves—and immortality”. She seems excited about her journey with her two companions, and feels so pleased by this gentleman’s courtesy that she gives up her distress and freedom to enjoy it –when you are dead, there are no more troubles and no more leisure time. She feels happy with her exchange of life for death’s civility. It now seems that she wanted to die sooner but couldn’t, and death came to her but in slow form as if she was ill. She doesn’t realize where she is headed as he drives the carriage away slowly, with no hurry – this means that she is already dead, and being taken in a hearse. She sees her life as movie being played in front of her as they pass the school, the fields of grain, and the setting sun. Journal 1: Answering the Telephone

...an impolite behavior to not answer or greet when someone phones you. Perhaps the person calling me might think I accidently hit the wrong button or something, which would potentially lead to them hanging up and redialing me again. I assume if I don’t answer within 5 seconds the person calling me would just hang-up and try again or try text messaging me. The past few days that I have been attempting the survey has been a bit difficult for me because I am use to always answering with “hello.” However, I made a concerted effort and achieved good results for this project. My friend, Savina, and I were planning on hanging out Thursday afternoon. I waited for her to pick me up at the CRCC business building. She called me when she arrived, and I answered her phone call, but didn’t say a word. This (non-conversation) silence lasted for 23 seconds and then she asked “hello Caroline, are you there?” I did not expect this patient reaction from her. After we met, I asked her why she waited on the phone for a whole 23 seconds instead of saying something immediately. Her response to why she didn’t say something sooner and instead waited 23 seconds was because she assumed I was really busy at the moment and needed a few seconds before answering her call. Plus, she said she was in no hurry so she waited. She thinks my silent action is understandable because it has happened with her before. I think there is also another reason why she waited so long to respond. I think it also took her longer...

You had a terrible accident. Do you remember anything?" "No, I don't remember anything," I noticed a necklace that I was wearing. I looked at it, and on the back, it said "Nemesis."
