...Chungking Express has a split plot with two separate love stories being told in chronological order. These stories of loss and longing overlap and connect – allowing the audiecene to draw parallels between the two. Key events, dreams and desires are seen to be almost identical. Chungking Express does not follow a linear model, but rather follows a very abstract plan, where cause and effect aren’t quite as evident as in many Hollywood movies. In fact, one could say that Chungking Express relies on what is deemed as ‘chance encounters’ by the viewers. David Bordwell defines the plot of Chungking Express as one that ‘is built out of a daunting number of minutely varied repetitions of locales and routines. As these cycles compare characters and situations, cause and effect become less important than parallels among congruent or contrasting aspects of love’. (2000: 283) The sense of a constantly reoccurring ‘déjà vu’ between people and placesemerges from the start of the film. At the beginning of Chungking Express, while Cop 223 is chasing a criminal down a crowded corridor, he passes the woman who will become his love interest in the story, the ‘Blonde Woman’, announcing in voice-over that, ‘at our closest point, we were just 0.01cm apart from each other. Fifty-five hours later, I was in love with this woman’. At the end of the first ‘love’ story, after Cop 223 has received the Blonde Woman’s paged birthday message, he enters the Midnight Express where he bumps into Faye and this...

...Happy Together: “messages sent to no one” The scene in which Chang takes Fai’s tape-‐recorded sadness to the “end of the world” represents a different kind of feeling compared to the theme of the rest of the movie. The “end of the world” is the only one scene which is characterized by magnificence, brightness, and the revealing of happiness upon the release of sadness. In the film, sadness is materialized as the tape recording of one person’s past thoughts, language and emotions. This concept represents a special relationship between time and memory: recording is a method of missing, and the action of leaving tape in the end of the world is to forget completely. In this film, Fai misses his controversial life with Bo-‐wing that is full of love and sadness. So, Fai wants to forget the whole past life, since the deeper he loves Bo-‐wing, the more sadness he will suffer...

...In the Middle of Nowhere Lust, Caution directed by Ang Lee has been recognized as a sensational film with a high degree of sexuality. However, a solid plot of the film has captivated spectators who was initially allured by a rumor that the film contains numerous sexual scenes. In addition to the solidity, the movie includes an esoteric ideology and a complicated psychology of two protagonists. Therefore, appreciating the movie once may not able us to catch messages that Ang Lee conveys. After watching the film several times, concentrating on the narrative and formal elements that build themes of the film, I could finally recognize some of purposeful messages that Lee hopes us to catch. In the sequence (2:21:38~2:25:30), a scene right after Mr. Yee madly runs to his car when Wang Chia-chi tearfully murmurs to Mr. Yee to escape, a professional combination of formal elements, especially mise-en-scene and cinematography, effectively builds two themes in Lust, Caution - a destined life of one woman and her sacrifice. The sequence begins with a long shot of Wang Chia-chi exiting Chandni Chowk Jewellers by explicitly displaying her anxiousness. The camera track shots Wang Chia-chi as she cannot find an empty rickshaw. Looking around restlessly with an uneasy look, slightly withered and stumbling body, and even wandering fingertips are recorded intact. The reason of this uneasiness if because she has finally broke the frame of the play she has played in and has faced the reality....

...Angelo Cupani Film 262 4/6/14 Hong Kong: An Industry Born on a Budget Hong Kong has often been referred to as the “Hollywood of the East”. Although there are qualities of the Hong Kong film industry, which do indeed resemble those of Hollywood, implying that Hong Kong’s film industry is simply a second-tier version of Hollywood’s is an injustice to the unique industry model that Hong Kong has developed since the mid 20th century. Multiple factors, namely economic, have driven Hong Kong filmmakers to adapt different methods of production and exhibition than Hollywood filmmakers, resulting a in a distinct style of cinema that maximizes profits and controls costs, and has proven itself successful. Many of the unique practices of Hong Kong cinema stem from the industry’s tendency to push films through the production process much more quickly than the typical Hollywood film, and on a much smaller budget. The pace at which Hong Kong films are made is unmatched, proven by director Tsui Hark who went from script to release in less than two moths with his film Chinese Feast. The speed at which these films are released is driven by exhibition. With most production companies throughout Hong Kong film history being vertically integrating, including Shaw Brothers and Cinema City, the goal has been to push as many films through their own theaters as quickly as possible, with rapid turnover rates. Unlike Hollywood films, which can often stay in theaters for a month or longer, Hong Kong...

...With its exemplary cinematography, distinctly bold colour palette and unique sound design, Wong Kar Wai’s ‘Chungking express’ (1994) possesses some of the most evocative and powerful imagery in modern cinema. One of the most dynamic shots, lasting just thirteen-seconds, 29 minutes into the story is of a mysterious woman in a blonde wig (Blondie), played by Brigitte Lin. The character is shown via a mirrors reflection as she looks up at the ceiling, speculating on human behaviour. It’s interesting to note that the subject has been shot from above. Not only does this reiterate her position of vulnerability, make us focus on the dialogue but also gives us the impression that in her state of depression she will be swallowed up by the frenetic pace and lifestyle of Hong Kong. While Blondie is narrating, the camera slowly eases into the subject, but comes to a halt before we get a clear close-up shot of her face. It’s almost as if the director has nearly allowed us to finally connect with this recluse but then terminates the intimacy. It reveals a lot about her character. She is cold, aloof and taciturn. This is the point where she exhibits some of her opinions and feelings which is why we get the zoom up. She is in her most vulnerable state of the film. The fact that she is so prominent within the frame demonstrates that this is the closest we have been to Blondie. However, the cameras movement ceases before a more detailed shot is included which is frustrating for the audience...
