...California, the city that I’ve known most of my 29 years. This suburban, upper middle class city lies about 27 miles out from Downtown Los Angeles and is part of the Los Angeles County. I moved here when I was barely 2 years old and have resided in this city since. Little did my parents know that the city they choose to raise their family at would be a safe, quaint and well-kept community. Though majority of its residents are Asian, I still feel that Walnut is open to all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Regardless of ethnicity or culture, we all share at least one common interest and that is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In this paper I will discuss my assessment I retrieved from my community survey as well as uncover the components of health nursing problems related to this community’s dynamics. Community Overview The community that I am assessing is Walnut, California. Walnut is known for their academic excellence and is a host to Mount San Antonio College. As stated in their mission statement, “It is a community that considers the lessons of the past, understands current and future realities, and shares a sense of cultural belonging” (Walnut Mission Statement, 2016, para 1). This residential city is accessible to four counties and is located between 3 interstates, San Bernardino, Orange and Pomona. As mentioned on the City of Walnut webpage, “Walnut is proud to be identified as one of the cities with the lowest crime rates in the San Gabriel Valley” (City of Walnut, 2016)...

...Elizabeth Kiem Resilient Cities What makes a city resilient? When the word resilience comes to mind I think of ones ability to bounce back. In the case of matching resilient up with a city I wasn’t quite sure what exactly goes into a city being qualified to earn that adjective. After navigating around the Building Resilient Regions Website and viewing what they do and how they do it, I found myself looking at their resilience capacity index. This index ranks over 300 U.S. cities on how it recovers from stress. Ultimately a cities stress is a mixture of how well it can handle natural disasters, economic decline, and rapid growth. It can be summarized as a cities ability to adapt and transform. When looking at the index the top ranked cities was not what I expected. I decided to see just how resilient one of my favorite cities to go to is; Seattle, Washington. I picked Seattle because I love to visit there. Being from Arizona I love the change of scenery. Cool, rainy, and gray is a nice getaway from scorching and dry. I also have family there so it’s a city close to my heart. I have never thought about its resiliency so after I learn more the next time I go there I can see first hand what needs to be done or what it already doing. Seattle is the largest city in Washington and located between Lake Washington and an inlet of the Pacific Ocean called the Puget Sound. Seattle’s population is over 600,000 people. Seattle is hilly and has wet winters and dry summers. In regards...

...not have thought of? What sorts of things are important in cities that are omitted in the situation? At the start of the game, I am allowed to choose the type of terrain for my city by adjusting the number of water bodies and how hilly or flat the land is. This would suit the type of city that I would want to construct, as hilly terrains would not allow the construction of certain types of infrastructure. In real life, this cannot be done as the location is fixed and cannot be altered easily. Humans have to adapt to their environment around them and not the other way round. Also, the city that I construct is in isolation and is not minutely affected by neighbouring cities or global economies. Resources and people transfer from city to city and an individual city will be affected and plays a role in the larger regional sphere. This is not simulated in the game, which takes away a vital component of running a city in real life. Also, there is a pause button, which allows you to halt the progress of the game so as to allow you to solve various problems and continue once they have been fixed. The real world does not stop for a single moment, and problems and conflicts may arise at any time. Nevertheless, the game also included many things that try to simulate real life, such as natural disasters to create chaos or problems within the city. Thus, the game allows one to have a broader perspective of how running a city feels like, such as managing finances, accommodating the interests...

...that was the only life I knew and thought it was the best. Adulthood brings into focus maturity. I moved into the city, and came to the realization that I had to adjust to a different way of living, another transition of my life. I was very overwhelmed by hustle and all the excitement of the life that surrounded me. For this reason rural life and city life can be compared and contrasted in regards to cost, standard of living, accessibility and entertainment. Living in a rural environment gives one the sense of a community. Everyone becomes your family sharing concerns for each other, Neighbors can look out for each other and care for your property, less concerns among people for each other exist when living in the city, but as a result of busy schedules and time constraint it is understandable. The most noticeable difference between city life and rural life is cost. Living in the city is very expensive due to a higher demand of goods and services due to demographics in population. The basic necessities of life for example housing (rent or own) food consumption, utility bills, and to maintain that social standard can be overbearing, but there are better educational opportunities and wider range of professional government jobs and higher pay. Living in a rural area, the standard of living is inexpensive, there is a smaller population growth and the demand for goods and services is on a much smaller scale. In contrasting rural and city life, accessibility to services...

...1- Letter to friend about charity Dear ABC, I hope you are fine and doing well. It came to my knowledge that you have volunteered with a charity and you are working in a developing country. The time I heard this news I was so proud of you. I always knew you were different from everyone, your interests and your perspective of looking at this world was so different always. Now you have finally found your path of helping people directly. Working as a volunteer will provide you deep experience about the grass root problem pertaining in that country. You will also get to know the people, culture and possibly learn a new language. And since you belong to a developed country working in a developing country and as a volunteer will aid the people to realise that humanity exits. However my friend in this letter I will take the opportunity to advise you to take care of your health. There are many diseases you are unaware of which might affect you in this great cause. Hope to see you soon. Your friend XYZ. 2- Many national customs are no longer relevant in today’s society In the event of globalisation, where communications and technological advancements have led the world to shrink, where we can travel to the other end of the world within few hours, where information flows without barriers, customs traditions have been suffered very badly. Customs and traditions, languages and cultures depend up on people for survival. If people do not find pleasure in retainting the culture or...

...Urban Sustainability Sci – 275 10-10-14 Instructor: Karen Marasigan By: Tyler Vesneski The program that I chose to implement into my hometown is “How to Build a Cooler City.” “From 1878 to 2005, Los Angeles temperatures rose 4 degrees on average, climbing from around 62 degrees to 66 degrees.” Urban areas such as Downtown Los Angeles are likely to rise 4 to 4.5 degrees within the next 10 years. My goal is to cut the cost of electric energy and make the city of Los Angeles a much cooler place. The first challenge I will have is to go to city council and try to get them to back up my project and me. The next step would be to get a budget from the city and start working. I can lower the temperature of Los Angeles by implementing green roofs across the city and in particular downtown Los Angeles. The other is to lay down permeable material throughout alleyways and select streets. Both of these solutions have been used in Chicago to help lower the physical temperature of the city. For example the City Hall building in Chicago is half a regular black top roof and the other half a green roof. When measuring the temperature the black topside of the roof was about 160 degrees Fahrenheit, when on the other side of the same building, the green roof side, and the temperature dropped to about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. That is an 80-degree difference. The reason the roofing is such an issue is because all that heat is trapped on top of the building and then moves into the building...

...Fahey 12/10 2014 Dead City To Be Brought Back to Life In Ordos, Inner Mongolia in China, Kangbashi district is filled with skyscrapers, government buildings, museums and theatres. Kangbashi looks just like another rising urban center of prosperity, except that there is hardly anyone living there even though it was originally designed to house and entertain one million people. It has been infamous for being the largest ‘ghost city’ in China and unfortunately, it is not the only one. China’s economy has been growing rapidly over the past decades and so is realty business, but problems follow. As a result of a real estate bubble, ‘ghost cities’ sprang up all over the country. The media portrays the deserted plazas and dead stillness in daytime as the excessive Chinese infrastructure investment, and although the media shows cause great concerns, the Chinese government rarely has open discussions on this problem. In my point of view, ‘Ghost Cities’ in China is an important issue since it affects the urbanization, utilization of resources, lives of Chinese citizens and ultimately the development of the entire country. In this paper, I will use Ordos as a typical case study in order to look into some of the contributing factors to this issue such as politics, the economy, social structure and traditional culture, and I will present further thoughts in a broader context. First, I will try to answer the following questions: What are the causes of ghost cities? What are the policies...

SOME OBSERVATIONS ON LEWIS MUMFORD'S 'THE CITY IN HISTORY' DAVID RIESMAN* For a number of years I have not had any time to undertake book reviews but I feel so keenly the importance and excitement of Mumford's work, and my own personal debt to that work, that I wanted to contribute to this symposium even if I could not begin to do justice to the task. What follows are my only slightly modified notes made on reading selected chapters of the book-notes which I had hoped to have time to sift and revise for a review. I hope I can give some flavor of the book and of its author and invite readers into the corpus of Mumford's...

...White Night is known for it’s cultural diversity of arts, music, fashion and many more passions across the city of Melbourne. It is a planned event that happens every year in the month of February, and commences at 7pm and concludes at 7am. It was originated in Paris, France in 2002, in an attempt to make art and culture accessible to large audiences within public spaces. Paris’ Nuit Blanche (White Night) has inspired an international network of programmes in over 20 cities (White Night Melbourne, 2013). Last year in February Melbourne was the first city in Australia to hold this remarkable event, and unite the ranks of these worldwide cities creating similar all-night events. The event is intended as an ephemeral ''moment in time'' that would light up the city to reveal an art-filled wonderland and then vanish soon after sunrise (Cuthbertson & Northover, 2013). The festival is a fantastic chance to showcase Melbourne as Australia’s international city of artistic improvements, and celebrate the city’s commitment to art, culture and music. The opening of White Night Melbourne involved more than 300,000 people into the heart of the city. The unique festival is accessible to all ages and it attracts people from interstate. Because it is such an immense event that occurs all night and is based into the city centre, multiple roads are blocked for the hundred of thousands of guests attending and walking the streets of the magnificent light shows occurring. Projections of...

...in Living in the City Living in the city means to have easier access to any resources we may need, like having nearby marketplace, hospital, mall, and school however the common perception about cities is that they were dangerous because it is where criminals usually attack for there are greater mass of people that causes pollution due to smoke from vehicles. Although, cities are where you also find bigger and brighter opportunities for you to live a better life because of advance technologies and system of education. I have lived in this city all my life. It is where I was born, grew up, and first learned how to write and count and develop into a matured young woman. This city has always been a big part of me because it witnessed all my special moments, sweet smiles, hardships and struggles that caused my eyes to cry in tears. Although, an Ideal home for us is very hard and tricky to find because there are factors to consider before we can decide on which home to invest in that lead us to keep moving from house to house so I can consider myself as NPA or No Permanent Address in this city. Since we moved out from my grandparents’ house and got separated from living with my relatives we got to experience to move from house to house and due to this I got to transfer to different schools that lead me to making more new friends. Despite of all this, I have been blessed. I have been lucky enough to experience many different walks of life. I know that if I had to live in an...

...take something you need, so be it. He was killed in battle when I was 13. It infuriated me that his journey had been so selfishly ended with a simple clash of swords, when mine was only just beginning. By the time I had turned 15, Egypt had fallen into an immense drought and many people were dying. Crops were deteriorating, trade was dwindling, and our civilization was falling apart at the seams. Something needed to be done. The city of Kadesh, although a small Hittite city, had abundant resources, enough to get our land back on track and relieve the hardships we were facing. Something needed to be done, and it was decided we would invade the small town in order to regain our city’s vitality. It was time to draw our swords in a clash that would save our city. It was then, that the small city of Kadesh became known as “the deceitful city of Kadesh”. The war went on for many arduous months, with the small community proving to have more brute then first anticipated. Many of our men were dying, and the pharaoh is always the one who received aversion from the people because of high death tolls in war. So he decided he would valiantly join his soldiers in battle, in a bid to improve his reputation throughout the land as well as try to honour his father. Little did he know, this would only prove to seemingly be the end of his short journey. At the age of 17, after ruling as Pharoah for a mere 4 years, I was struck during...

...here for 22 years, and I have a very deep feeling with Beijing. In order to obtain more choices and opportunities for the future life, I chose to come to Norwich to continue learning from a month ago. As we all known, the world is a vast and varied place, and every place has different customs. And I found some similarities and differences between Beijing and Norwich. I would explore only a few of the most important ones here. I will talking about the similarities between the two city. Firstly, let’s start from the city transport. Beijing and Norwich are one of the most important and biggest city in their country. So the transport is a important part in their city. Both Norwich and Beijing have convenient transportation and well-developed transport. Secondly, both cities are located of the east in their countries. ...City of Memories I feel the moment coming, the feeling of a cool breeze just like the same feeling I get when I chew a minty fresh gum. My heart senses each breeze of wind as it strikes my face and soon my heart is addicted to this feeling of coolness. The trees look alive as if they are dancing and the sun is shining bright, but not to the point where it’s burning hot. As I walk down the city streets, the sight of sky towers and magnificent buildings appear before my sight. The people that are in the city are singing and dancing to express their love for the city too. When I see these lively people it makes me want to celebrate and share each other’s culture just like they do. After walking another mile, I arrived at Chinatown, which is the place that feels like home to me. The sight of seeing the majority being Asians brings passion to my heart. My walk continues until I stop in front of the restaurant called the Koi Palace. This is where I had real authentic Chinese food which I have not had in ten years. My friends or family always walk out of there with a stomach that is ready to explode. Right across the restaurant is a boba place where me and my friends have a drink and start conversations. That place used to be our hangout spot, but now it’s flooded with people from different schools and even different cultures. The next stop was downtown and downtown was constantly filled with animated people. Walking through downtown hearing either jazz or the blues playing on the...
