How IEP’s Helped Shape Differentiated Learning in the Classroom
Federal law requires students with disabilities and special needs be taught on the basis of an individualized educational program (IEP), (Gable & Hendrickson, 1993). Each student at Archway has an IEP, and each IEP is considered when creating lesson plans, applying for work studies and setting long term and short term academic goals. Originally, IEP’s were often created without the input and involvement from the classroom teachers, but now the cooperation between teachers, administration, and parents helps to create IEP’s that are suitable and encompass all modifications that are necessary for the child with special needs, (Gable & Hendrickson, 1993).

They are each tailored to each students specific instructional needs and goals, as well as provide a listing of accommodations they may need to help them in the classroom.
I had the opportunity to work with a student, Val, who used an instructional aid during class lessons. She had her own specific iPad that had an app that assisted her in lessons pertaining to language and new vocab. The app would work as a visual and auditory word bank that she could use when answering comprehension questions about the stories we read or actually reading the vocabulary words from the book. The instructional aid was listed in her IEP and she was encouraged to use it to help her get involved within class activities.
Another student I had the opportunity to work closely with, Chris, was nonverbal and required a communication device. He had a device that resembled a keyboard. He had over 200 icons that had both visual and auditory buttons that he would press to communicate. Unlike Val’s instructional aid, Chris took his device everywhere and used it form sentences describing his needs and wants. Additionally, he could be involved in classroom activities because his device had separate sections for each subject and a typing area so he could spell out anything left out of his device. This communication device was also listed in Chris’s IEP so he could essentially have a voice and means of communication, in and out of the school and classroom
