I'll try as hard as I can to draw a picture just as if you were really standing there. But please, forget that I am giving a lecture now, I'm not. We are just sitting together, imagining together what will happen on Resurrection Day (Judgment Day). My aim today is not to scare you. My aim is to tell you the facts about that day. How will it begin? "The Trumpet will just be sounded, when all that are in the heavens and on earth will swoon, except such as it will please Allah (to exempt). Then a second one will be sounded, when, behold, you will be standing and looking on!" "The trumpet shall be sounded, when behold! From the sepulchers (men) will rush forth to their Lord!" In the story “A Conversation with My Father” by Grace Paley, the narrator is telling an instance of when she visits her eightysixyearold father and tells him a story about a drug addicted mother and her son and how no matter what, an individual can turn their life around and make the best out of any situation or tragedy. While using the time to connect with her father in her final days, Paley uses the characters to tell a story on a morality of a person’s character that is reflected by their experiences in life. After reading this story, I completely agree with the daughters statement that, “... it’s not necessarily the end…” (Paley 417) The author adds at the end of the story that “Of course her son never came home again, she did change.” (Paley 417) This is the type of quote that I, as a person of believing “everything happens for a reason”, try to live by. The son in this story may have never came back home to his mother, she made the decision to pick herself up off the couch and make something of herself and her life. These descriptions are stuck to him as he arrives at his desk job in San Francisco. With a smile Elliot is gentlemanly enough to hold the door open for a lady, and when many other people then take advantage of his generosity, you can watch the smile melt from his face. Elliot Richards is a character that is lonely and unsatisfied with his life, and through a crazy journey of self-discovery, he becomes who he has always wanted to be. At the beginning of this journey, Elliot, a white male, seemingly in his late twenties to early thirties, is a nerdy adult. In the first scenes, he is wearing a fully buttoned up shirt with a tie underneath his sweater vest, all of which highlight the large glasses on his face. Elliot seems to hide behind his clothes and his glasses because he is not comfortable with himself. This is evident in the way he relates to his co-workers, he speaks like a middle school child in a work environment. Larkin is largely considered to be an atheist; however, he did live in a society that was predominantly Christian, so this poem is perhaps his way of trying to understand the attraction of religion. The narrator, who appears to be an atheist also, goes to a church, wanders around, and leaves unsatisfied. He doesn’t understand the allure of churches or religion, and wonders to himself when they will go out of fashion. He then goes on to imagine what they will be turned into once they do fall out of use. In the end, the narrator comes to the realization that religion and churches will never go out of style, because mankind has an innate need to believe in something greater than themselves. This poem was written in 1954, and published in 1955. The rhythm of the poem is iambic tetrameter, and it has a strict rhyme of ababcadcd. The language of the poem is conversational, and the narrator poses many interrogatives (asks questions). Larkin uses a lot of religious imagery and words, some are used as they are intended, but others are used in a blasphemous way. Blasphemy is the act of expressing lack of reverence for God, but if one doesn’t believe in God can what they say really be considered blasphemy?
