Imogen Cunningham
Imogen Cunningham was an American photographer, born 1883 in Portland, Oregon, and is today known as one of the first professional woman photographers in American history of photography. Imogen didn't have any desire to become any kind of commercial photographer instead her goal was merely to create art. “My interest in photography has something to do with the aesthetic, and that there should be a little beauty in everything” (C.K 50)
Imogen is today most know for her remarkable and beautiful botanical photographs but also for her love of portraiture. She was also a member of the informal group f/64.
Imogen Cunningham had already decided at an early age that she wanted to become a photographer but her professor had advised her that she would want a background in science in order to become a photographer.

Curtis, who was a photographer of the American West and of Native America people. For two years she worked as his assistant, where she studied and learned the techniques and methods of retouching negatives and printing platinum prints of Native Americans. Later in 1909, she was awarded a grant from her college sorority Pi Beta Phi, to study photographic chemistry in Dresden, Germany, were she went for one year before returning to Seattle.
In 1910 Imogen established her on portraiture studio after returning from Germany, where she would use the techniques and skills she had learned to create what is known as pictorialist imagery. Pictorialism, an art form where the photographs would consist of black and white or sepia photographs, manipulated in a way that would make them seem out of focus and blurry, some more than others.
