...The Internship Report Rationale ∗ (Eng 498/698) Because the student who does an internship receives credit from the university, graded credit determined by the technical writing faculty, there needs to be documentation in addition to the site supervisor's evaluation as a basis for that graded credit. Submitting an internship report not only provides the faculty with a document which qualifies the student for graded credit, it also provides the faculty with in-depth information about the profession they are responsible for preparing students to participate in. Furthermore, and of considerable importance, the internship report increases the student's responsibility by requiring the student intern to gather information and plan the report throughout the work experience. The student then has an opportunity to demonstrate maturity as a technical writer by presenting, analyzing, and evaluating his or her own work on the job. Report Content and Format The internship report comprises four parts, each involving a different kind of information and a different mode of written discourse: (1) introduction, (2) narrative, (3) analysis and evaluation, and (4) appendix. Introduction The introduction explains the setting where the work was accomplished and gives a sense of how the intern's job related to the entire work of the hiring organization. This section lends itself to the inverted pyramid organization, moving from general information about the entire organization to a specific...

...2) 12 Nov 2013 Valuable Internship While unpaid college internships give students opportunities to gain useful professional skills and experience, college cooperative education programs provide more formal career training. Many students, instead of focus on their school entirely, choose to participate in internships without getting paid. Why would they make this kind of decisions? Well, the answer is that internships can help students gain work experience and skills, get a job opportunity, and it is a new requirement for recruiters. First of all, the unpaid internships are beneficial because they offer real-world, practical experience. “The experience you gain is indescribable,” said Brittany Harris, who interned at NBC, CBS, and Kurtis Productions in Chicago as a college student and is now looking for a full-time job as a broadcast journalist. “Classes can only teach you so much about how the real world operates, but nothing beats seeing how it works on a day-to-day basis.”(Halperin 589) It is important to participate internship before getting a real job. Students would learn that the real world out there is not going to be like what they read in textbooks. The textbooks can only provide some information that tells students how to deal with certain kind of situation, but what matters most to them actually happens outside of their classroom where students can learn skills that they never learn inside of their classroom. In addition, an internship is not only about experience...

...An understanding of the importance of pro bono and access to justice is a crucial part of any law student’s education. How could this be improved? Twenty one years ago in 1992, “Daniel” who was 29 years old, was arrested in relation to a crime which left the victim, a county investigator, with a broken nose in Arizona. Two years later, evidence emerged that during the incident “Daniel’s” accomplice said “We got to do him” to which “Daniel” did not reply. On the basis of this weak evidence “Daniel” was convicted of the more serious crime of conspiracy to commit first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. For the majority of my lifetime, “Daniel” has been trying to correct this egregious conviction and his struggle is far from over. Last summer, I work pro bono on “Daniel’s” case as a second year law student in Oracle, Arizona, and came to realise the true benefit of pro bono work. I ended up in Oracle after studying American Legal Practice at Birmingham City University as part of my second year LL.B studies. The American Legal Practice module is the largest UK to USA legal internship programme in the United Kingdom with over 100 host partners. The module provides students with an opportunity to work pro bono in an American law office, project or organisation for academic credit. Before embarking on the internship students must undertake training, in order to prepare them for some possible issues they may encounter. The training covered areas including legal...

...polish is used to clean the surfaces of teeth of tartar and stain. Throughout all my internships coronal polishing has been present. Although all my internships were all drastically different, it allowed for a variety of patients. My first internship was a periodontal office, and showed the severe effects of gingivitis and periodontitis. My second internship was an orthodontics office and showed the improvements in teeth shifting into place as well as the need for brushing and flossing techniques to avoid decalcification spots. The last place I interned at was Camp Pendleton and with all the active duty patients their was a variety of different cases to coronal polish. In the first internship office, Periodontics, coronal polishing was utilized in their appointment, disease control and deplaque which they abbreviate as “DC”. During the “DC” appointments, the patient is checked to see how the are maintaining with their periodontal disease and oral hygiene. Being a speciality office, every patient had some form of periodontal disease, therefore their oral hygiene was very important to maintain. In these appointments I would start by asking the patient the frequency they brushed and flossed as well as what oral aids they were using. Following that I would coronal polish their mouth and then the Doctor would come in and check on their progress. In the second internship office, Orthodontics, coronal polishing was performed before the bonding of braces,...

...Issue: 1 Article: 13 ISSN 1309-6249 THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES IN AN ODL INSTITUTION: A CASE FOR THE ZIMBABWE OPEN UNIVERSITY Richard BUKALIYA Zimbabwe Open University, Mashonaland East Region, Marondera, ZIMBABWE ABSTRACT Several studies done elsewhere have indicated and concluded that a gap really exists between the quality of graduates produced and what the market demands (Mpairwe, 2010). For this and other reasons, training institutions and employers have accepted the need to seek mitigatory steps to bridge the gap. Among other steps, institutions of learning have introduced internship programmes also referred to as field attachment in some of their degree and non-degree programmes. There has also been the realisation that imparting the relevant practical skills is a partnership between the training institution and the prospective employers through student internships. However, despite these positive intentions, interns on field attachment have faced serious challenges among which are insufficient time and lack of funding for the programmes. It is behind this background that the present study sought to establish the benefits and challenges faced by student interns at the Zimbabwe Open University. The study focussed on two of the university`s faculties: the Faculty of Science and technology and that of Applied Social Sciences. Most of the students on internship were from these faculties. Being quantitative in nature, the study employed the...

...Placements Word Count: 967 An internship is a directed, practical learning experience, outside of the normal classroom setting, in which students sharpen skills, gain experience through work on advanced productions, apply classroom learning to professional settings or projects, and learn first-hand how professional companies or organizations operate (Palomar College, 2005). It is generally know that many universities offer sandwich degree courses and this paper will critically examine the value of work placements undertaken by universities students. The popularity of work placements and internship has grown in the recent years as young graduates found it hard to secure a job. In 2011 UK government offered ‘youth contract’ to help young people getting jobs and this was initiated when youth unemployment has hit a record high, with more than one million young people out of work in the UK, and applicants far outweighing the number of entry-level and graduate vacancies ( Bennetts and Emilie, 2011 ). There are a number of benefits of work placements to both students and organisation offering internships. According to Gazzard (2011), ‘Placements can provide industry with a cost-effective labour pool and develop a pipeline of motivated and competent future employees.’ An article published in Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology (2013) states that internship experience not only benefits the company that a student work for, but internships give students an opportunity to...
