...Theodore N Mcgrady Prof. Christopher Hanover Music 160 February 11, 2015 Music Analysis Assignment Musical growth in Taylor Swift’s Blank Space and Dan Emmett’s “De Boatman’s dance”. In this music analysis assignment, I am going to analyze two pieces of music. I will analyze first, “De Boatman’s Dance” by Dan Emmett and then “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift. I shall listen closely for instrumentation, texture, melody, and form and I will talk about the genre of each song. Instruments used in “De Boatman’s Dance” include: a tambourine, bones, voices, and a banjo. I hear several voices singing in different parts. In the vocal section, I hear only men’s voices. I noticed that the tenor singer sings solo in some part of the song. Upon listening closely, I noticed that the singers lower their voices every second time they sing, “I rode de boatman’s boat” in the chorus. I noticed most part of the song is sung in baritone as the chorus is sung in alto and tenor; we hear a little syncopation by the bone. The melody is shared between the banjo and the voices. The music is divided into quadruple meter and takes the form of A-B-C but then there is an intro before the “A” starts. This form is continued throughout the song. In Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” the instruments used are: keyboard, effects, drums, bass and her voice. The voice overall has a pleasant timbre that is very sweet and gentle, and can convey emotions well. The voice cuts through the heavy...

...Discipline. If you’re trying to get a handle on how good hitters are at reacting to balls and strikes, this section contains measurements on such things as swing and contact rates. A natural way to divide such rates is based on the strike zone: A swing at a pitch inside the zone is a different event than at one outside the zone. A whiff on a pitch middle-middle is a disparate event from a whiff on a pitch way outside, so it makes sense to tabulate them in different columns. There is a problem with this dichotomy, however: There is no strike zone. In the words of Michael Lopez (who borrowed in turn from Bobby Ojeda), the strike zone is a unicorn. By this I mean not that the strike zone does not exist at all, but rather that it does not exist in the way that Major League Baseball defines it. The rulebook definition is a rectangular solid hanging in space, with infinitesimally thin boundaries which, once touched, trigger strike calls. The actual strike zone is a shifting, nebulous cloud of probability density. It moves up and down with the whims of the umpire and the policy changes of MLB. It shrinks and expands as the count becomes favorable or unfavorable. It grows when an experienced pitcher throws and contracts when bad pitch framers snatch pitches with exaggerated body movements. It’s not a static thing, fixed for every hitter of every height; instead, it is constantly dynamic, flowing with the previous pitches and at-bats in a game. I render here no judgment as to whether the...

...It’s a Fragment from the thigh bone of a young cave bear, and proposed that this had been crafted as a flute by the prehistoric man. When uncovered, many questions Like ‘was this artifact crafted as a flute? Or were the spaced holes the result of chewing by a carnivore?’ were raised. There has been an amazing amount of analysis, discussion, debate, and disagreement on the subject, and the debate continues today. The Divje Babe artifact is 43,100 years old (±700 years), based on radio-carbon dating. The artifact is 4.47" (11.36 cm) in length and is broken at both ends. It has two complete holes and what may be the incomplete remains of one hole on each end, meaning that the bone may have had four or more holes before being damaged. The maximum diameters of the two complete holes are 0.38" and 0.35" (9.7 mm and 9.0 mm). The distance between the centers of the holes is 1.38" (35 mm). Assuming that the Divje Babe artifact was crafted as a flute, one analysis...

...discourse community. Softball is one type of discourse community. By Swales’ standards, it qualifies as a discourse community by meeting all six of the characteristics in his study. Softball is a discourse community, first and foremost, by the group selecting the team. The team shares common interests and goals. This community has a language that often times is understood only by this group. In a discourse community people are separated into occupational or specialized interests groups (Swales). The same thing is true in softball. There are key positons which cannot be filled by every player on the team. While a pitcher may be able to play second base or center-field, a member of the team who plays shortstop or catcher, cannot usually pitch. This group spends countless hours together, practicing and training, working towards a similar goal. The goal is to win all of their games, and that is achieved by scoring more runs than their opponents and having a pitching and defense game no one can beat. Working together as a team, reading into each other’s feelings and emotions, and feeding of each other,...

...Performance preparation. There are many requirements needed in football to play the game successfully. Many of these requirements are skill related, such as passing. There are also many physical requirements such as having good cardiovascular fitness. A requirement such as cardiovascular fitness is essential in football as the pitch is between 100 yards (90m) and 130 yards in length (120m) and the width not less than 50 yards (45m) and not more than 100 yards (90m). And dependant on the position that performer could be running all over that pitch, for a long period of time. There are many requirements in my sport. Many of them are physical. Here is a list of all the physical components of my sport; * Speed- this is defined as the time taken to move a body part of whole through a movement over a pre- determined distance. In the position I play which is striker, you need speed to be able to get past defenders and to run and chase the ball if the midfielders pass the ball past the defenders. Although it is not just the strikers that use speed within the sport, it is utilized in every position. In general speed is used for chasing the ball down. It may not be physically running towards the ball, you may just be running back towards your own goal to defend it or in the opposite situation where the player could be running forward as quickly as he can to support the attackers. For example elite performers such as Luka Modric, who plays in midfield, have to utilize their speed...

...An executive summary summarizes, or reviews the main points of, a longer document or report for a reader that does not have time to read the entire report. An effective executive summary analyzes and summarizes the most important points in the paper or report, and will often make a recommendation based on the analysis. Executive summaries are “stand alone” documents that are almost always read independently of the reports they summarize. When preparing to write an executive summary, ask yourself the following questions: * Who will read your executive summary? Sometimes your executive summary may have an “intended” audience: your professor might require you to write it for a CEO, department head, or supervisor, for example. On other assignments, your audience won’t have a specific identity, but always keep in mind that the reader of an executive summary needs to know all of the important information in the main document without reading the actual document. Even if you know that your instructor will be reading everything that you submit, write the executive summary as a “stand alone” document. * What is the main document’s main topic, theme, or idea? Most reports have a “thesis” or central point that they are seeking to communicate. Try to sum this up in two or three sentences. If you are having trouble with this, imagine that someone has asked you, “what’s this report about?” and that you have to explain it in only a few sentences. Once you’re able to say what the main...

...intermediaries are part of the “bargaining power” force of Porter, based on the crucial role they have in the media value chain, I believe they are a very specific and distinctive element of porter’s power of buyer force. Next to that, there should be a place for the IT and the impact of government. Which leads me to believe that, in order for the model to fit my needs in my industry, it needs to have at least 2 extra more forces to be considered. A quick preliminary application to Porter’s model in the Media industry will show the following; 1. Bargaining power of suppliers; There are no big international formats in the media created in the middle east (examples like: The Voice, Got Talent, The winner is, Star academy etc..) as a result, international format creation companies ( such as Endemol, Talpa, Sony) can affect the Middle East Format creation companies by adding more competition and raising their prices. 2. Threat of...

...1.1 INTRODUCTION The combination of visual and auditory information at the human-computer interface is a natural step forward. In everyday life both senses combine to give complementary information about the world; they are interdependent. The visual system gives us detailed data about a small area of focus whereas the auditory system provides general data from all around, alerting us to things outside our peripheral vision. The combination of these two senses gives much of the information we need about our everyday environment. Dannenberg & Blattner ([23], pp xviii-xix) discuss some of the advantages of using this approach in multimedia/multimodal computer systems: "In our interaction with the world around us, we use many senses. Through each sense we interpret the external world using representations and organisations to accommodate that use. The senses enhance each other in various ways, adding synergies or further informational dimensions". They go on to say: "People communicate more effectively through multiple channels. ... Music and other sound in film or drama can be used to communicate aspects of the plot or situation that are not verbalised by the actors. Ancient drama used a chorus and musicians to put the action into its proper setting without interfering with the plot. Similarly, non-speech audio messages can communicate to the computer user without interfering with an application". These advantages can be brought to the multimodal human-computer interface...

MMI leveraged its relationship with the Canadian entertainment industry to incorporate its clients’ brands into films and TV shows. Greyhound, the country’s largest provider of intercity bus transportation, recruited MMI services to provide cost-effective ways to communicate its marketing message to consumers. Philip Hart, president of MMI, was preparing to make a final pitch to sign up Greyhound as client. For Greyhound, the major competitors include VIA Rail, owned automobile, and airline transportation companies. The consumer segmentation can be divided into three groups including college and university students, newer professionals and established professionals. The target market will be age 18 to 24 college and university young professionals. Philip Hart needs to decide which promotional vehicle would be best for Greyhound’s product placement. The alternative choices include to stick with traditional advertising, or product placement on TV series shows like “Corner Gas” or...

...from a source or stimulus through a medium to a reception point. The medium through which the information travels can be air, water, space or solid objects. Information that is carried through all natural media takes the form of waves - repeating patterns that oscillate back and forth. E.g. light, sound, electricity radio and TV waves. Stimulus: A medium must be stimulated in order for waves of information to be generated in it. A stimulus produces energy, which radiates outwards from the source in all directions. The sun and an electric light bulb produce light energy. A speaker, a vibrating guitar string or tuning fork and the voice are sound sources, which produce sound energy waves. Medium: A medium is something intermediate or in the middle. In an exchange of communication the medium lies between the stimulus and the receptor. The medium transmits the waves generated by the stimulus and delivers these waves...
