...Michael Ondaatje’s 1987 novel In the Skin of a Lion (hereafter ISOL) successfully reveals memorable ideas and encourages readers to search beyond the text for various ways of interpreting the novel through its strong post-modern techniques, intriguing multiple narrators and thoughtful artistic techniques. It’s potential to be interpreted in a post-modern context, through post colonial lenses and furthermore by the symbolism of light and dark used throughout the novel gives the text integrity and sophistication. However to view the novel through only one perspective would not give full credit to the text, so one must consider various interpretations to enhance one’s understanding of the novel. Michael Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka in 1943, moved to England with his mother in 1952 and settled down in Toronto, Canada in the 1960’s. He himself was a migrant, forced to speak a different language and accept a foreign culture and this aspect of his life influences the strong emphasis placed on the impotence of migrants to communicate with society within the novel. As I read this novel in the 21st century, I have lived in Australia my whole life and am not fully aware of the implications of being marginalised in society. ISOL is a text that can be appreciated in many ways and not only gives readers a chance to understand the social and political history of Canada in the 1960’s but the social and political issues that are ongoing in our society. ISOL has many post-modern characteristics...

...that their supplies were just about gone. When, what to their joy, Prince William found a pile of coconuts on the ground. “Each will bring 60 rupees,” said Prince Richard with a grin as he almost tripped over a lion skin. “Look out!” cried Prince Robert with glee as he spied some more lion skins under a tree. “These are worth even more—300 rupees each If we can just carry them all down to the beach.” Each skin weighed fifteen pounds and each coconut, five, but they carried them all and made it alive. The boat back to the island was very small. 15 cubic feet baggage capacity—that was all. Each lion skin took up one cubic foot while eight coconuts the same space took. With everything stowed they headed to sea and on the way calculated what their new wealth might be. “Eureka!” cried Prince Robert, “Our worth is so great That there’s no other way we could return in this state. Any other skins or nut that we might have brought Would now have us poorer. And now I know what I’ll write my friend Horace in England, for surely only he can appreciate our serendipity.” Problem Formulate and solve Serendipity by graphical LP in order to calculate “what their new wealth might be.” Solution Let: X1 X2 : : Number of Lion Skin carried Number of Coconut carried Since each lion skin weighed 15 pounds and each coconut 5 pounds, while they did not want to bring more than 300 pounds : 15 X1 + 5...

...life. Dorothy lives on her auntie Emily (Clara Blandick) and uncle Henry’s (Charley Grapewin) farm, and has friends named “Hunk (Ray Bolger), Zeke (Bert Lahr) and Hickory (Jack Haley). All of the mentioned friends play a vital roles as The Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), The Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) and The Tin Man (Jack Haley)” in the film. (IMDb, n.d). At one point, Dorothy decides to run away and find a new life with her dog Toto. During a storm and trying to get back home, Dorothy finds herself in a strange place, The Land of Oz. The scene I have chosen to analyze is “The Cowardly Lion” staring Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Lion. The importance of each character in the scene is the Lion tries to seem brave, while the Tin Man and the Scare Crow are scared of him. Toto runs away from him and Dorothy saves Toto. She teaches the Lion a lesson on picking on people. That is when they learn the lion is really just a coward. The producers used a little bit darker lighting, which mad the background appear to be darker when the Lion was picking on the Tin Man and Scarecrow. The light casts shadows off of the characters, especially Toto. I feel that it helps the viewer relate to the menace the Lion is trying to portray. According to Geneseo Edu (n.d),...

...Galapagos Sea Lion The Galapagos sea lion is found on islands in the Galapagos Archipelago and off the coast of Ecuador where a population has been introduced, they have also been found in Costa Rica. The Galapagos sea lion, Zalophus wollebaeki is the scientific name, is fundamentally a coastal animal and is rarely found more than 16 kilometers out in sea. And these sea lions are now on the endangered species list (proquest.com). I think people should be held accountable for hunting and killing an endangered species and we should use any resource possible to save the Galapagos sea lion. The population fluctuates between 20,000 and 40,000 animals. A census in 1978 submitted a population size of about 40,000, but a recent survey in 2001 found a 50% decline from this earlier estimate (Alava and Salazar 2006). The running differences might exist between counts over this period, but this decline suggested is cause for serious concern (proquest.com). The Galapagos sea lion are active during the day and hunt in mostly shallow water, where they feed on fish, octopus, and crustaceans. Sea lions are also capable of making extremely deep dives of up to 200 meters and for 20 minutes or longer, then rapidly surfacing with no ill health effects. When the animals are on shore, the Galapagos sea lions rest on the sands of the beaches and rocky areas in colonies of usually groups of thirty or more (life-sea.blogspot.com). They are extremely social animals and pack together on the shore...

Furthermore, the low switching costs of the skin care products makes easy...

...Benchmark Basically dressing is meant to prevent nakedness. However the way of dressing can be influenced by a number of factors like beliefs, religion, climate and social standards. How a person dresses says a lot about his character and beliefs. Most women in England dressed in silhouette and wore long gloves and shawls to cover bare shoulders and arms. The material to make the dresses was made of soft cotton which only the rich cold afford. In Rome only senators were allowed to wear garments dyed with Tyrian purple as a sign of their social status. It brought class to families and raised their social status. Wearing of lion skin in Africa by a man signified his brevity in the community. They believed that lion was the king of the jungle and by killing it a person become as brave as the lion. During the ice age era people dressed in animal skins to keep warm. These are examples of how culture influenced dressing and how different styles were adopted. In history people did not have much to choose from and kept their dressings as simple as possible. With the growth in cloth manufacturing companies affording cloths has become cheaper with other people also opting for second hand cloths. Dressing has gradually changed due to new fashion trends over the years. There are individual who major with fashion designs and designing cloths is their career. ...constellation that I am choosing to write about is the Leo constellation, because I am a Leo! This constellation represents a powerful lion. The Leo constellation lies in the northern part of the sky, and is the 12th largest constellation. It was discovered by the Greek astronomer, Ptolemy in the 2nd century, the same time that the other zodiac constellations were discovered. The creation story of this constellation is one that I find to be very interesting. Hercules had to perform twelve labors for killing his family, and killing Leo, the Nemean lion, was one of them. This lion was terrorizing the citizens, and killing many people, children, and animals that were used for food, so Hercules was sent to kill it. While Hercules was trying to kill...

The Ethiopian flag is red, gold and green, so the use of these colors represents the people’s allegiance to Africa and a return to their Ethiopian homeland. Red is representative of the blood spilt in the name of freedom, particularly of slaves brought over during the colonial period. Green symbolizes Jamaica and its vegetation, which holds an important place in the practice of the religion. Gold is the wealth of Ethiopia, as well as hope and faith. ...panel and stands 55 1/2 by 20 7/8 inches. The piece was done in Italy; however it does not have a particular city associated with its creation. The depiction of St. Jerome in the Wilderness incorporates many trends that originated in the Renaissance Era. St. Jerome is illustrated as a thin and feeble man, with worn and tattered attire. Classic attributes of St. Jerome, such as the lion, the cardinal’s hat and the bloody stone beat off his chest (due to hallucinations) are represented in the work. The bloody rock is held with his right hand to his chest and a long stick is held in his left; behind the stick on the right of the composition, sits a small but sturdy lion. The cardinal’s hat is positioned to the left hanging off a twig next to the very direct and front centered protagonist. A rocky landscape surrounds St. Jerome with little shrubbery and absent life and color. The dim sky provides little to no light and the golden halo surrounding St. Jerome’s head is the only object with any highlights or reflection. The overall color palette of the piece is dingy and drab. The shadows cast by the lion and the hollowed out stone landscape provide an overall eeriness to the work. The primary color red is used quite vividly to climax the blood surrounding the rock at St.Jeromes’s chest. The bright and dramatic red is a drastic contrast to the dark rock and St. Jerome’s very pale and weathered...

...5-16 Scrap metal is a big business in Tennessee, and most of the scrap metal is shipped out of state. Tennessee was concerned that much of the metal being sold to dealers in the state was stolen, so the legislature passed a law designed to give law enforcement a better opportunity to determine whether metal on dealers’ lots was stolen. The new law included, among other provisions, requirements for screening of metal sellers, recordkeeping requirements, and a 10-day waiting period between when purchased metal could be resold by a dealer. The Scrap Recyclers Association sued the state, arguing that the law violated the Commerce Clause and also the Fifth Amendment. The district court upheld the law and the Recyclers appealed. What do you think the outcome of this case was and why? Tennessee Scrap Recyclers Association v. Bredesen, 556 F.3d 442 (6th Cir. 2009). 5-17 Aurora, Colorado, passed an ordinance banning pit bulls and other selected breeds of dogs from being inside the city limits. The American Canine Foundation, an organization aimed at improving the canine industry, sued to have the ordinance struck down as unconstitutional. Specifically, they argued the law resulted in an uncompensated taking and violated the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses. Explain why the ordinance is or is not constitutional. ...one’s presentation is the first thing that other people see in us and also the first thing that people judged about us. There are people who are exactly what they look and appearance is just only one factor by which you can determine who they really are. On the other hand, it is also true that you can tell what the person is like to some degree by his or her words and actions. Words and actions have a power of their own, but they can only be powerful as by who demonstrates and delivers that serves as solid of proof of one’s position. There is no denying fact that one’s actions and words can move and motivate people or can terrorize and create damage. The lion is known for it’s courage and bravery and wearing it skin in disguise could also mean power. The best-known perhaps, is the boastful Ass. The Ass in lion’s skin represents false prophets roaring their followers as if they were mighty and awe-aspiring figures when in fact they are no more than braying pedants. Another one is a thief that is disguised in suit brings them the tribute due to the character they...

...dark with orange or yellowish markings. They also have powerful limbs that are equipped with claws to dig its underground burrows and their front limbs are covered with a thick covering of scales. This is a structural adaptation and helps them to survive ground temperatures greater than 140 degrees! This helps the tortoise to survive in its niche because if it didn’t have the adaptation of having scales to protect its skin from the scorching hot sand, its skin would burn. Desert tortoises occupy deserts, grasslands, canyon bottoms and rocky hillsides. The weather is usually very hot and the temperature can go past 45 degress! The types of plants that live in the area are cacti, agave, Joshua tree, desert wild flowers, etc. All these plants are able to survive in the hot desert conditions. They dig burrows under bushes, overhanging soil, rock formations or into open soil. At least 95% of their life is spent in burrows! In the food chain they are the primary consumer. Here is an example of a food chain: Grass – Desert Tortoise – Rattle Snake – Coyote – Mountain Lion. Since they are a primary consumer (they only eat plants) this makes the desert tortoise a herbivore. So therefore grasses form the bulk of its diet. But it also eats herbs,...

...Hercules is an amazing hero. Hercules is strong, courageous, and clever. Traits that all true heroes have. Many think Hercules is impulsive and brutal but the acts that he has committed that are impulsive and brutal were Hera’s doing. The first reason that Hercules is the best hero is because he is strong. People may argue that being a hero just relies on your courageousness, but in real life that is not always the case. The greeks valued strength in their heroes as well as the other qualities I mentioned. Hercules was very strong and took his body to the limits. He vigorously trained and was ready for any challenge. Without Hercules’ strength he would not have been able to complete many of his challenges. For example, to strangle the nemean lion and cut off many heads of the hydra are tasks that require major strength. Other heroes strength may have been mighty but not as mighty as Hercules. Another example of Hercules’ insane...
