Human error in aviation is somewhat of a sensitive topic due to the recent tragic events of September 11, 2001. ...HYPOXIA Hypoxia results when the body lacks oxygen. Hypoxia tends to be associated with flights at altitudes. However, many other factors such as alcohol abuse, heavy smoking, & various medications interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. INDIVIDUALS PHYSIOLOGICAL ALTITUDE. Drugs. Many medications have an unexpected effect when combined with high altitudes. Never self-medicate, even w/ over the counter drugs. Alcohol. 1 ounce of alcohol can give the body a physiological altitude up to 2000’. Smoking. The hemoglobin molecule of RBCs has a 200-300 times greater affinity for CO than for O2. Smoking 3 cigarettes in rapid succession or 20 to 30 cigarettes w/ in a 24 hr period gives a physiological altitude of 5000’ at sea level & a 20% reduction of night vision. CLASSIFICATIONS: Hypoxic. Occurs when not enough O2 is in the air or when decreasing atmospheric pressures prevent the diffusion of O2 from the lungs to the bloodstream. Typically, Occurs at higher altitudes. Hypemic. or anemic, hypoxia is caused by a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Anemia & blood loss are the most common causes. CO,nitrites, & sulfa drugs also cause this by forming compounds w/ hemoglobin & reducing the hemoglobin that is available to combine w/ O2. Stagnant. O2 carrying capacity of the blood is adequate, but circulation is inadequate. Conditions as heart failure, arterial spasm, & occlusion of a blood vessel predispose the individuals to stagnant hypoxia. More often...

...Executive summary The HRM issue I choose to write about is job analysis and design and the organisation reflected in this paper is Qantas engineering (QE) which resides under the Qantas Airways Ltd Group. Qantas has recently undergone a huge transformation with the reduction of 5000 jobs. Competition paves the way to downsizing and reorganisation changes which meant that QE was going to reduce its workforce from 500 to 180 engineers. The main cause for this reduction in engineering was benchmarking the QE organisation with engineering organisations of other major competitor airlines such as Emirates airlines, Singapore airlines and British airways, retirement of ageing aircraft, reliability and on-wing performance of newer engines / airframes due to improvement in materials and computers/ programs that simplified administrative tasks. The most significant reason was that Qantas was losing its domestic market share to Virgin Australia and this meant that Qantas had to lower its cost base in order to compete. This reduction in workforce meant that existing engineers had to be flexible & adaptable to learn and pickup engineering functions that redundant staff had been doing all these years. There was clearly a failure to analyse jobs before the transformation and redesign work in line with the new company strategic plan. Failure is rarely unimportant, but in some operations it is vital that processes do not fail. Failure in aircraft in flight, for example, or electricity supplies to hospitals, or car seat belts, or the emergency services can be literally fatal. For these operations dependability is not just desirable, it is essential. Even in less critical situations, having dependable processes can give a competitive advantage. ...5 Aircraft Load 5.1 Overview Aircraft structures must withstand the imposed load during operations; the extent depends on what is expected from the intended mission role. The bulkiness of the aircraft depends on its structural integrity to withstand the design load level. The heavier the load, the heavier is the structure; hence, the MTOW affecting aircraft performance. Aircraft designers must comply with mandatory certification regulations to meet the minimum safety standards. This book does not address load estimation in detail but rather continues with design information on load experienced by aircraft. Although the information provided herein is not directly used in configuring aircraft, the knowledge and data are essential for understanding design considerations that affect aircraft mass (i.e., weight). Only the loads and associated V-n diagram in symmetrical flight are discussed herein. It is assumed that designers are supplied with aircraft V-n diagrams by the aerodynamics and structures groups. Estimation of load is a specialized subject covered in focused courses and textbooks. However, this chapter does outline the key elements of aircraft loads.
