...Head injuries are quite common and occur regularly in all contact sports. Concussions, from brain injuries can cause long term effects and can lead to dementia. Too many concussions occur in high school athletes that participate in contact sports. One may suggest that contact sports should be banned from all high schools. Non contact sports should become a part of the physical education curriculum so that young adults should not have to suffer the consequences from head injuries in contact sports. There are a large number of dangerous contact sports that athletes participate in today. Examples of the most common contact sports include: football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, field hockey, and lacrosse. Research suggests that these sports have the most severe injuries. High school students that participate in contact sports are endangering their health, lives, and future. Contact sports have been a part of school age children’s life for a long time in America. Whether it be football, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, or the recent addition to American sports, rugby. Millions of children in middle school or high school have worked hard and enjoyed playing. In recent news articles contact sports have been deemed bad for children. Doctors have been studying the statistics and have come to the conclusion that children have been developing physical injuries resulting from certain types of contact sports. One of the new findings from these studies is that once a person especially a child...

...Regan cheered for the basketball team at Eureka Collage, and even both Bushes cheered at Yale and Andover (Graff 526). Through the years, the sport of cheerleading has evolved, yet the majority of people still do not consider cheerleading a real sport. In 2010 David Whitley published an article in aolnews.com stating that “Just because you work hard at something or just because there is a risk of injury involved does not make it [cheerleading] a sport.” Although schools and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) do not consider cheerleaders as athletes, they make them abide by the same rules and safety guidelines of all other recognized sports (historyofcheerleading.com). Cheerleaders have some of the same concepts of gymnastics, and gymnastics is considered a sport. The perceptions of Whitley and the NCAA as well as many others are reasonable to some; however, it is my belief that cheerleading is a real sport. Cheerleading like any other sport requires an enormous amount of strength and agility, grueling hours of practice, and extreme dedication. Cheerleaders attend camps, risk injury, and face competition. A thesis statement should be the last sentence in your first paragraph and should tell what your essay is about AND the point of the essay. This sentence is not doing that. According to dictionary.com the word “sport” is defined as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” A...

This page talks about avoiding the boredom that comes with the rest while in concussion recovery, your continued good health may depend upon it stay away from blows to the head in sports. The United States of America concussion rates are high in sports; statistics show that there was a 62 percent increase over the last decade in children under the age of 19 suffering serious head injuries while playing sports and engaging in other physical activities. Teenagers are suffering more from concussions and brain disease then an adult or child. To start off, as most people know concussion talk in the sports media is very high. High school-age athletes are more likely than younger kids to have sports-related concussions, but the rate of such injuries in both groups is on the rise, a new U.S. study suggests. From 1997 to 2007, emergency department visits for concussion in kids aged eight to 13 playing organized sports doubled, and the number of visits increased by more than 200 percent in older teens. (American Academy of Pediatrics). According toThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that teens have higher risk of getting a concussion. Currently, the only way we can lower these rates is if teens don’t start football at a young age. In addition, American sports have shown that head injuries such as concussions are common for teens...

...Andres Franco September 27th, 2010 Research Essay Can concussions affect brain function? The question whether concussions can affect brain function has been asked for years. Only recently medical researchers and scientists have found the answers to why concussions can affect the brain severely. Not only have they examined pro sport stars that have died due to concussions but also serial killers who have died or who are still in prison. Many pro football players suffer from concussions the most, since they do play head-on; the ones who have died from other natural deaths were examined. Some serial killers have also agreed to have their brain looked at for irregular brain function, and in both players and killers, there were either undeveloped frontal lobes or damaged frontal lobes. This was the answer they’ve been looking for not only to keep players safe that play pro sports, but to maybe save people from being a victim of homicide. Pro wrestler Chris Benoit suffered brain damage from his years in the ring and getting hit by metal chairs, rails, stairs, and even baseball bats. Maybe that could help explain why he killed his wife, son and also himself. A doctor who studied Benoit’s brain found out that his frontal lobe was damaged. Chris Benoit was a family man and everyone who knew him apart from wrestling, knew that that was most important to him. When he wasn’t wrestling he was with his family. In the ring he wasn’t so nice and his opponents weren’t either so they hit...

...Article 1 Divorce rates in Dubai plummet to 24pc in the space of just two years The divorce rate in Dubai has become the lowest not only in the UAE but the whole of the Arab world, thanks to a new counselling service offered by the emirate's court service. Divorce rates have plummeted from 35 per cent to 24 per cent in the space of just two years. It has been attributed to the success of the Reformation and Family Direction Section created by Dubai Courts in 2000 to tackle marital problems. Wodad Lootah, a social worker at the section said Dubai Courts had set up the section following an increase in divorce rates during the 1990s. She said the main aim was to allow couples to settle disputes amicably without resorting to court action at an early stage. Since the Reformation and Family Direction Section was established, it has received 1,496 couples who claimed they wanted to divorce. Of these, 471 couples changed their minds and did not divorce - nearly one third. "The main causes of divorce are lack of understanding between the husband and wife because neither know how to communicate effectively with each other, as well as how to solve their problems in the right way," she said. Wodad added that the section has taken many steps to reduce divorce. It has distributed about 1,200 social packages to newly married couples at the court which has helped in dropping divorce rates by six per cent in the year 2002 alone. However, it's not all...

...ESSAY The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. I don’t know about everyone but I’ve stumbled and fallen an abundance of times, although one failure in particular had a substantial impact on me. My freshman year of high school competing as a runner in the world of Track & field had been the most disappointing year of my high school career. I made it far for a rookie, but how it all played out in the end just felt as if daggers had pierced my heart. For those who know me know that I am all for this sport, you can always find me on or near a track. As I started off my freshman year my coach advised me that being a sprinter is the path I should take in order to be successful in the sport. He said my personality best suited one of a sprinter the most. So I set out in hopes of achieving what few could, I wanted to be one of those to compete in the state meet as a freshman and get recognized by colleges early. Have scouts on my trail from freshman to senior year. Unfortunately a leg injury ended my season in the finals of the qualifying meet for state. Now some may not look at this as a failure, but in my eyes it was nothing less than a defeat and failure to pursue the goals I sought forth to achieve. I failed and defeated myself in the process. However after recovering from the injury I had my eyes set on yet another goal, Redemption! This down fall changed the way I viewed failure, it gave me a drive, and allowed me to break barriers...

...Organized sports play a vital role in the development of a child’s life. The purpose of my essay is to explain why organized sports is essential to a child’s life and will teach them valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and discipline giving them a better chance to avoid pitfalls in life and groom them for success. Through my life experiences and statistics I will explain why organized sports not only develop a child’s life, but also are instrumental in so many other ways that the reward far outweighs the risk. There are many arguments that organized sports at an early age can injure a child, and makes many of parents nervous and uneasy. While the evidence supported in the statistics of Boston Children’s Hospital state that 20% of all children that participate in sports will receive some kind of sports injury, it states that 60% of these occur in practice and are only mild strains or sprains. The research also shows that children are more likely to hurt themselves in everyday activity, and these injuries are more serious than those that occur in organized sports. I can attest that all injuries I had in sports were minor, and the main injury that prevented me from continuing to play came as a result of falling on a slippery pavement, and not while engaging in sports. Organized sports have been proven to develop leadership in individuals. I feel that without sports I would not have developed into the leader I am in the corporate world. For example playing football...

...Why do the best athletes have to go to college if they are skilled enough to go to the pros out of high school? There are two sides to this argument, the top athletes should get a college education v.s. The top athletes should go straight to the pro’s. Athletes should have to get 4 years of a college education otherwise if they get injured and can’t play anymore, they won’t have a college degree. By the end of this essay, both sides to the argument will be explained. In the MLB and NHL, you don’t have to go to a University. The top high school athletes in baseball and hockey are recruited and are not required to attend a University unless they choose to. Meanwhile, in the NBA and NFL, you are required to go to college. This is because...

...their one goal, which is to win Super Bowl championships. Some players perform at a high level for a while, whereas others don’t have a chance at experiencing actual playing time on the field at all. NFL players are less and less likely to have a definitive long-term career in the NFL. On average their career may span for about 3 ½ years (Stradley, 2011). (Workman Pub Co, 2002) The NFL has added several new teams, provided innovative equipment, additional rules, distinctive playing styles, but most importantly there has been a revolutionary change of the NFL culture. The game of football is being played at a faster pace and players are becoming larger, and intelligent (Wharton, 2011). While the sport of football can be stressful, competitive, entertaining and enjoyable, it also poses a dangerous threat of injury. One of the more common injuries within playing or watching football are concussions. Over the past few years concussions have become a more serious endangerment to those who play, from new evidence we have seen on the effects on the brain and how it can affect a player’s future. The purpose of this project is to investigate the current status of football and concussions in finding a solution to reducing head trauma in players as it pertains to the following areas: overall safety for the players, NFL culture, equipment, research efforts, and the future of football. According to CBS Sports (2011), more than 61% of former players have experienced concussions during their...

...Nick Coleman Professor Todd Aldridge ENGL 1110 29 November 2015 Revision: Essay 2 - Paying of College Athletes Several years ago, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the NCAA, started out as a young business with a couple colleges under their helm, and today they have grown into an $11 billion industry tasked with the controversial decision of sharing their wealth with the college athletes that made them relevant. Should college athletes get paid is what it usually all boils down to. This burning question has been canvassed various times over the turn of the century with several underlying concerns for the athlete’s futures and also their safety. Opponents of paying college athletes contend that the scholarships said athletes received to their institutions of higher learning should be more than enough. Once a university extends a scholarship to an athlete, that athlete becomes property of that university. With that being said, once on campus, they become “student athletes,” a term coined by the NCAA to justify their exploitation of the athletes that made the infamous organization relevant, and also full time workers as they spend on average an excess of more than forty hours a week dedicated to their respective sports. In a survey conducted internally by the NCAA, it was discovered that athletes competing in more than a half a dozen sports indicated that they too, are putting in the equivalent of full time worksheets, but don’t receive the benefits that regular...

...Low back pain by young athletes; is practicing sports, prevention or a risk factor to develop low back pain? Ziva Tavcar, Msc Human Movement Science Clinique Valmont, Switzerland Introduction Low back pain is a common problem in a modern society and is present also among pre- and adolescents as well by young athletes. Relationship between low back pain and physical activity shows that physical and psychical factors of over active or inactive life-style lead among genetically predisposed individuals to a higher risk for low back pain. Thus better understanding of a problem, earlier diagnostic and right management prevent earlier apparition of recurrences and chronicity in adulthood. Spinal pain Spinal pain appears due to variety of symptoms, which are experienced at least once in a lifetime by approximately 80% of a general population [1]. Classification of spinal pain concerns affected region (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, or irradiation in the limbs), duration (acute, sub-acute, chronic), or level of functional disability [1]. Lumbar pain is determined as a pain, muscle tension or stiffness that occurs between the last thoracic vertebra and the lower gluteal folds, with or without leg pain [1–3]. Chronic low back pain appears more often by working population in adulthood [1] and fluctuates during time, appears at different occurrences with different intensities and disability [4]. The complexity of symptoms could be associated with physical, psychical and recently genetic...
