Even with the implementation of software to improve the overall quality communication is important.
Poor interdepartmental communication can cost the organization, therefore it is important to improve communication across all departments. According to Towers Watson “companies with high effectiveness in change management and communications are three and a half times more likely to significantly outperform their industry peers than firms that are not effective in these areas” (Watson, 2013). Improving interdepartmental communication can be difficult, it is isn’t like a software where the software does the job. But it you are relying on your employees to communicate to one another. Boundaryless is a concept started at GE in the late 1980s and early 1990s and has been successful ever since. “Proponents of boundarylessness believe traditional boundaries between layers of management (vertical boundaries) and divisions between functional areas (horizontal boundaries) have stifled the flowing of information and ideas among employees. A boundaryless culture seeks to overcome the limitations imposed by these and other internal corporate divisions.” (Falk, 2001) GE’s strategy was to bring teams together in set intervals to address interdepartmental needs. They provided all the information necessary for the team to work together to achieve a common goal. My organization just started a similar project. Organizations should be organizing events to promote relationship building. It is important for employees to socialize. As a manager, you should know your employees, you can accomplish that by talking to them regularly. My organization does a great job at proactive relationship building, every year we have a Christmas party where all employees attend to socialize to have fun. During the summer we have cookouts during lunch which is also a good way for the employees to get to know one another. My manager sometimes organizes lunches for our department where we just talk a little about what is happening in our …show more content…
Most organizations have multiple locations or employees overseas, we should take these into consideration. In such cases, we should analyze which method of communication will be effective to facilitate a conversation between departments that aren’t in the same building. To communicate with our employees overseas we use Skype video chat, Skype video call, emails and phones. Communicating with the departments in the building is a lot easier, personally I use email most of the time; for urgent matters I use the phone or I walk to their office or cubicle. Our warehouse is downstairs, for me it is hard to communicate with the staff in the warehouse. I usually call but most of the time I don’t get an answer. My next step is to page the person I am trying to get in contact with and ask them to call me. Nine times out of ten they don’t call me back which is annoying because now I have to stop what I am doing to try to locate them. The results of empirical analysis provide evidence that the attitude of firms' management toward risk taking, the CEO's emphasis on strategic thinking, interdepartmental teams in the organization, and marketing competency foster strategic thinking at the organizational level, but formalization in the organizational structure impedes it.
