...EXPLAIN THE FUNCTIONS OF INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE IN LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT. Before looking at the functions of an internal quality assurer (IQA) role it is beneficial to understand what quality assurance is and why it has been established within the learning process. ‘Quality assurance can be defined as a system to monitor and evaluate a product or a service.’ Pg122 Assessors handbook It is the role of the IQA to uphold and maintain the credibility of the qualifications undertaken by candidates. The IQA supports this by helping employers and candidates to fully understand how these qualifications can further support and benefit their business. Thus ensuring effective delivery meeting the learners’ needs and expectations, which follows their agreed learning plan. They will maintain a close link between the learner, assessor and employer to enable full understanding in all assessment methods and the criteria they must adhere to. ‘Internal Quality Assurance is a key factor in managing ‘risk’ and ensuring that when certificates are claimed for learners the requirements of the national standards have been reliably met.’ (City & Guilds guidance on Internal Quality Assurance of Qualifications pg 6) The IQA team has a specific function with the assessment process within (education) centres. Although these functions may vary slightly, the guidelines the IQA’s work within remain the same. For example City & Guilds outline 4 main aspects to the IQA role, which state they...

...ensure that all existing standards are upheld among the Irish public service. All Irish public bodies are obliged to spend money with care and ensure that best value-for-money is obtained. Public Spending Code is structured by six parts. 1. The introduction – core principals of the code; 2. Part A – general provisions; 3. Part B - appraisal and planning; 4. Part C – the ongoing management, control and ongoing review, evaluation; 5. Part D – user friendly guidance material on the analytical techniques; In this case I would like to discuss three areas of the Public Spending Code: Quality assurance/compliance (QA), value for money and policy reviews and financial analysis. First of all I would like to talk about QA; it is a way to prevent mistakes in production and avoiding problems when delivering solutions or services to customers. Quality assurance was introduced World War II, when munitions were checked and tested for defects after they were produced. QA has two principals: 1. The product should be suitable for the intended purpose; 2. Mistakes should be eliminated. The main goal of these activities is to...

...THE CASE FOR INTERNAL SOFTWARE QUALITY While this might look like stating the obvious, I still find that there are organisations especially in this part of the world (Nigeria) that have not really imbibed software quality assurance practices. From experience, I find that its because management has not really taken a serious look into the merits and demerits of internal software quality. What is internal software quality and what how does it differ from Just plain Software Quality? When it comes to software quality assurance, it is most commonly viewed in two aspects (There could be more). • External software quality. • Internal software quality. This is derived from Steve McConnell's division of software characteristics in external and nternal characeteristics. External software quality refers to the parts of software that face a user. These refer to: • Functionality • Usability • Reactivity • Security • Availability • Reliability All these aspects of software quality can verified by testing the software as a whole – end-to-end tests. Most often this is the aspect of the software that users and non technical management focus on. Is it doing what the user wants it to do? While this is both ok and required, it is not enough to ascertain the quality of an application. Internal Software Quality refers to the quality of the source code itself. These refer to: • Application Architecture Practices • Coding Practices • Application Complexity • Documentation • Portability • Technical &...

...EVALUATING QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS Abstract Purpose Despite the abundance of research on quality management there is no universal consensus on how best to measure quality in higher education. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of the different methods used to assess the quality of provision in higher education departments in the UK. Methodology Drawing on relevant literature, the authors develop a quality audit tool that incorporates all key components of effective quality management programmes and apply it to a single UK case study department. Findings The findings suggest that the potential for quality enhancement is determined by the manner in which the evaluation is conducted and subsequent change implemented. Perhaps unsurprisingly there is currently an emphasis on internally derived quantitative data and there is potential to enhance the management of the quality of HE programmes. Research Limitations/Implications This article has concentrated on the development of the quality audit tool and tested this within one UK department. Work is underway to now test the tool on an international basis. Paper type Research paper Key Words quality, higher education EVALUATING QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS Introduction In many countries and many cultures, the issue of quality management has been firmly on the agenda of higher education institutions for quite some time. ...Sdn. Bhd can be solve if the company implement some sort of internal control system in all activities. A system of internal control consists of policies and procedures designed to provide management with reasonable assurance that the company achieves its objectives and goals. Typically, there have three broad objectives in designing an effective internal control system, reliability of financial reporting, efficiency and effectiveness of operations and compliance with laws and regulations. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is one of the internal control systems that can be implemented by the company. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a set of written instructions that document a routine or repetitive activity followed by an organization. The development and use of SOPs are an integral part of a successful quality system as it provides individuals with the information to perform a job properly, and facilitates consistency in the quality and integrity of a product or end-result. The term “SOP” may not always be appropriate and terms such as protocols, instructions, worksheets, and laboratory operating procedures may also be used. SOPs will detail the regularly recurring work processes that are to be conducted or followed within an organization. They document the way the activities are to be performed in order to facilitate consistent conformance to technical and quality system requirements and to support data quality. They may describe, for example, fundamental programmatic...

The factory system started in Great Britain in the mid-1750s, which turned into the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800s. Manufacturers began to include quality processes in practices in the early 20th century. After World War II quality became very important of the war effort. While bullets were being manufactured in one state and rifles made in another the military decided to start sampling techniques for inspection such a Walter Shewhart’s statistical process control techniques. After World War II the Japanese welcomed the input of Americans. Instead of focusing on inspection they tried to improve organizational process through the people who used them. As a direct response the United State developed total quality. Japan’s high quality competition broadsided the US industrial sectors like automobiles and electronics in the 1970s. The US approached and embraced the entire...

...Difference between QA and QC As we've talked in a previous post about the Definition of Quality, with these 2 terms exist the same “issue” where every single person/organization defines Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) in a bit different way. Also, many people including HHRR (Human Resources) and quality professionals do not know what QA and QC really means, and what the difference is between both terms. For those reasons, these concepts are often used interchangeably, and in some organizations one department performs the activities of both. The truth is that both terms have strong interdependence; QA relies mostly on the QC feedback and both work to deliver good quality products/services; but they are different processes. Next table shows the differences between them. QA vs. QC Definition from ASQ.org Assurance: The act of giving confidence, the state of being certain or the act of making certain. QA: The planned and systematic activities implemented in a quality system so that quality requirements for a product or service will be fulfilled. Other definition QA is a failure prevention system that predicts almost everything about product safety, quality standards and legality that could possibly go wrong, and then takes steps to control and prevent flawed products or services from reaching the advanced stages of the supply chain. Definition from ASQ.org Control: An evaluation to indicate needed corrective responses; the act of guiding...
