Conflict/Personality Style

...Reality, according to the Encarta Dictionary, is defined as “actual being or existence, as opposed to an imaginary, idealized, or false nature.” It is something that I thought I had a good grasp on, that is, until I reviewed my conflict style through multiple sets of eyes. I understand that every conflict style has its pros and cons, and therefore I should not cringe when I see that my husband believes me to be in the Control-Competition category; however, I cannot stop myself from thinking that the words control and competition are appalling and negative. It is especially hard to digest, seeing as how I had myself primarily in the Solution-Orientation category and thought that I fit the Control-Competition category least of all. I tend to adjust my conflict style according to whom I am dealing with and where the dispute takes place. When dealing with my husband, my preference is to wait and give myself time to think things through. I would rather handle all disputes behind closed doors; that way, if I have things to say to that may cause either party embarrassment or discomfort, it occurs privately, and I can avoid adding extra emotional fuel to the fire. I do not like to be corrected in front of my peers and feel that the emotions my anger and embarrassment create are hard to keep out of the conflict and often get in the way of solving the true issues. Taking time to think things through also allows me to focus on exactly what it is that I am upset about and...

...developed skills wereadaptable, collaborative, committed, communicative, competent, dependable, enlarging, enthusiastic, intentional, mission conscious, prepared, relational, self-improving, selfless, solution oriented, and tenacious. The key is to make individualists into team players by cultivating the necessary traits. The dynamics of teams will be discussed through diversity, conflict and conflict resolutions within my organization. This paper will also describe three outcomes that could reasonably occur as a result of conflict resolution. Conflict is a necessary evil that is inevitable. Conflict can be either a strength or weakness to a company’s overall goal. When individuals come together for a common goal conflicts may arise. As research has shown, there is more positive values than negatives. Conflict Resolution Conflicts are inevitable whenever individuals with different personalities come together to work interdependently. Sometimes this dynamic helps to strengthen the team, and on the other hand some teams suffer which produces a poor outcome like according to Mary Parker Follett who stated that “as we cannot avoid it, we should, I think, use it to work for us”, referring to a conflict in...

Resolution was then defined as “a decision or determination; the act determining an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc” (“Resolution, 2014). In 2013, Ome summed up conflict resolution as “a variety of approaches aimed at terminating conflicts through the constructive solving of problems” (p. 5512). Types of Conflict Nelson & Quick (2013) broke down the types of conflicts for us to better understand and distinguish. ...Mgt 456 Professor Hartley September 10, 2012 Personal Reflection Culture plays a big role in everyday conflict. Every type of culture has its own unique way of approaching a conflict and responding to it with different actions. The different beliefs and views impact our feelings and behaviors regarding conflict and conflict resolution. Looking more in-depth of conflict resolution, below each culture lays a web graph of gender, religious beliefs, home and/or national cultural influences. Resulting from the diverse cultural differences influences dissimilar approaches to resolving conflict. Coming from a strict Armenian heritage, our culture is considered to mainly having the “blow up conflict” approach. According to Hocker Wilmont, the blow up conflict approach is stated as “hostility and uncooperativeness which leads to heated emotional exchange”. Unfortunately, the male gender of most families makes the decisions of any type of conflicts. Usually in the case of conflict in our culture then results to the “silent-treatment conflict” approach where there is silence between the relationships in conflict. This specifically applies to my background in my families approaches to conflict management. I was born into a family where conflicts existed every day. Growing up I thought to myself why are my elders yelling at each other and informing me to behave and not talk back to them when they were the ones going “wild” in front of me. ...Truc Ta MGT 331-002 Monday, November 17nd, 2014 Dr. Elaine Seat Negotiation Assignment First: Read all assigned material, then choose and describe the 3 most important aspects 1. There are a lot of the difficult negotiations we have get involved in, and the question is how can we deal with our differences now? William Ury has spent almost 3 decades travelling around the world from Yugoslavia to the Middle East, trying to get involved in conflicts, and think of ways to handle and resolve conflict in a positive and helpful way. What he learned about them is when there was a conflict between groups of San Bushmen, someone has to hide the poison arrows out in the bush. Then, everyone has to sit around in a circle, and kept talking about conflicts in many days. They will not stop until they can find a better solution. They can even send someone off to go somewhere if the tempers are still too high, 2. There is always a third side of the conflict between two parties. The third siders not only involve both of the parties themselves, but also the insiders, such as friends, family… We can use the third-side story of Abraham to deal with conflicts in out life. The best way in which the third side can help is to remind the parties what is really at risk such as for the benefit of the kids, the family, the community or the future. We should stop fighting for a moment and start talking. What Abraham was standing for was the “interconnectedness, or the unity of it all”. His basic value...

Rebuttal to Michael Craig's "Weak Nations' Pose Greatest Threat"

...article titled, “Weak Nations Pose Greatest Threat”, instigated by a pirating off the coast of Somalia. Kraig furthers in his article that the world is undergoing a dramatic ideological, political, international and economic transformation. Kraig claims that the United States’ new political and economic “threats” stem from a new source; failed states such as Somalia, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Nigeria, as opposed to conventional superpowers such as Russia, China, Japan, or the former Soviet Union. Kraig backs his claim by citing multiple civil conflicts that indirectly effect oil prices and our economic way of life in addition to the threat of small arms and a future attack on the homeland. Initially, it is noticed that Michael Kraig has numerous fallacies in his argument that failed states pose a greater threat to the U.S. than stable nations, for one he doesn’t recognize that the threats he cites can be traced to stable nations. Many of the nations Kraig cites, including terrorist organizations are funded and supplied by Russia and China. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Russia and China sell arms to every single nation the United States labels as a “Rogue State” or “State Sponsor of Terrorism”. Furthermore, the Congressional Research Service on August 25, 2005, listed multiple dubious transactions involving Russia, including “Russia signing an agreement with Iran to finish construction of the Bushehr nuclear power reactor, a transaction...

My own results showed that I exhibit avoiding conflict both at home and at work. It also showed that I also exhibited compromising and integrating conflict styles at work not just avoidance. I cannot say that I was surprised that my dominating style was avoidance, taking the assessment only confirmed what I knew. When comparing my results with my two evaluators I was a tad relieved by the consistency but a tad surprised as well with a slight variance from one of the evaluators. BACKGROUND/RESEARCH This assessment was completed by using Application 5.1 Assessing your Conflict Style on Pages 147-148 of our textbook Interpersonal Conflict. While completing my assessment I also asked my sister-in-law and my daughter to complete this assessment. I chose these two because they know me well and were able to be honest; they have seen me at my best as well as my worst. I trust that because of that reason their responses are valid.
