Introduction The purpose of this class is to understand and improve upon interpersonal communication skills to then use in relationships and collaborative leadership. Over the course of this semester, I feel I developed not only a better understanding of these skills but gained the ability to use some of them. These skills include self-consciousness and listening. Also, I was able to improve upon some of the skills I realized I already had such as empathy and authenticity. Although I have completed the course, there are still skills that I can learn and develop more including strengthening relationships, diversity and privilege, and appropriately giving advice. There are also various goals that I have for the future to improve my communication. …show more content…
According to Shankman (2015), authenticity consists of transparency and trust as well as being credible- or your words align with your actions (p. 51). This describes me because I always try to explain my motives to others to ensure that they understand and trust me. I know that I have gained their trust when others feel comfortable enough to tell me their secrets and problems they are having. Furthermore, I work very hard to ensure that my actions follow my words. For example, when making plans with my friends, I ensure that I am able to follow through with the plans even at the cost of other things. Overall, I feel that my strengths of both empathy and authenticity allow me to connect and develop a trust with …show more content…
Shankman (2015) states that self-consciousness is an awareness of yourself specifically your beliefs, values, emotions, strengths, and limitations which is enhanced by self-reflection (p. 21-25). By the middle of the semester, I noticed myself engaging in self-reflection more often. First, I started examining my actions and their effects on others. For example, I would say something to a friend and a couple minutes later think if that was the appropriate thing to say at the time, what I could have said differently, and what effect it had. In later conversations, this allowed me to ensure I said the correct thing. Eventually this helped lead to a greater self-awareness. I began thinking more about my beliefs and the occurrences of different emotions. The various class discussions also allowed me to improve upon this. For example, after a discussion about hot buttons, I now better understand what situations will make me upset, and after being able to discuss various topics with others, I now better understand my

...THE TWO-STEP FLOW OF COMMUNICATION A report called The People´s Choice* was made after analysing the process of decision-making during the course of an election campaign in 1940. After the analysis the authors suggested that the flow of mass communications may be less direct than was commonly supposed. Authors of The People Choice proposed the following Hypothesis: Influences deriving from the mass media first reach “opinion leaders” who, in turn, pass on what they read and hear to those of their everyday associates from whom they are influential. And that Hypothesis was called: “THE TWO-STEP FLOW OF COMMNICATION” Authors themselves intrigued by its implications for: • Democratic society: • They say it was better that people were more persuaded by the interaction with other people and that the influence of mass media was less automatic and less potent than had been assumed. • Social theory and communications research: • Hypothesis suggested that the image of modern urban society needed revision: image of the audience as a mass of disconnected individuals hooked up to the media but not to each other. IMPACTS OF THE HYPOTHESIS • The hypothesis in The People´s Choice, however, was not very well documented by empirical data: • The design of the study did not anticipate the importance which interpersonal relations would assume in the analysis of the data. • Interpersonal influence really attracted the attention of many researches of different kind, not just mass media researches:...

Interpersonal Communication

...Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is the process by which messages are sent between two or more people so that the participants within the conversation can communicate. The most common form of interpersonal communication is a dyad (a two person unit having a conversation) and it is said that “a sense of personal identity is achieved through negotiation with others” (Coover, G. & Murphy, S. (2000) The Communicated self: exploring the interaction between self and social context). On ITV’s “The Agenda”, Ed Miliband came under attack from Hearsay’s Myleene Klass over the controversial topic of mansion tax. It is fascinating to see how the two members of the conversation express their contrasting views throughout the duration of the discussion: Labour’s party leader, Miliband, expectedly is passionate about mansion tax and as is Klass. Yet, it must be taken into consideration the fact that the conversation between Miliband and Klass has external participants: the live audience, ITV viewers and other members of the panel; this therefore may affect one’s performance. Although their performances seem “sincere” they could potentially be “cynical” (Goffman, E. (1959) The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. Garden City, NY: Doubleday). For example, as Miliband’s purpose of being on “The Agenda” is to promote the Labour party’s policies and therefore may portray a cynical performance...
