One December 9, 2011, Officer Larry and Officer Byron pulled up next to each other talking when they noticed a black window tinted Tahoe approaching them. The vehicle appeared as if it was going to head straight until it noticed the two officer’s cars on a side street, which it then slowed down, and turned around. This of course made Officer Larry and Officer Byron very suspicious. It was approximately 3:10 AM, which made it even more suspicious as they were on a side street. The officers, both driving separate vehicles, went to follow the black vehicle. However, it rapidly accelerated in speed, turning the next corner and again accelerating. At this point, the officers then turned on their sirens and it appeared it was going to be a chase. The black Tahoe which had two males inside then made an immediate turn into a driveway, turning left, which put the passenger side away from officers Larry and Byron as they were exiting their vehicles.
As an officer in these situations you learn to get to the car quick, because more than likely something is going on such as hiding drugs, hiding a gun, or loading a gun and the more time you give them, the more time they have to control the situation. However, as the vehicle stopped in the driveway of 258 Carroll Street Ave. in Hammond, Indiana. Officer Larry seen the drivers throw something out the passenger window, and then simply acted as if nothing had happened. When Officer Larry approached the passenger side his partner, Officer Byron approached the driver's side, Officer Larry acted as if I didn't see what just occurred. He remembered talking with the passenger, Anthony, asking him what was going on, and he told Officer Larry he was getting a ride to a friend's house whose name he chose to not disclose. However, Officer Byron later told Officer Larry the driver had a completely different story.
Officer Byron partner placed the driver under arrest for an open container of alcohol that was sitting in the middle cup holder. Subsequently, the passenger, Romell, was arrested for the same charge, because neither party claimed ownership of alcohol, and both had access to it. There was no relationship between the two males, they were had only been friends for 11 years and would hang out with one another from time to time. The assailants, Anthony and Romell, were handcuffed and placed in our police cars. When walking back to the passenger's side of the vehicle, I found a loaded revolver lying on the ground approximately 5 feet from the passenger door in the grass.
Due to probable cause, Officer Larry searched the vehicle and found one baggie of crack cocaine, while another which was found by my partner, officer Byron, of approximately 25 crack rocks. There were no witnesses to the suspicious acts other than Officers Larry and Byron. Although there were no victims, the suspects were booked and interviewed by Sergeant Harris, and both perpetrators blamed the other for the drugs and the gun. They were both lodged in jail, and the outcome was pleas to a lesser charge of misdemeanor possession of Cannabis and gun possession. They each received a year of probation and a $500 fine.

Preliminary Investigative Report

...Preliminary Investigation Report: Range Tasking System Introduction My organization is currently organized with a Detachment at Fort Dix, NJ, but our headquarters is located at Fort Lee, VA. We were sent on a forward mission to train Soldiers going to overseas locations. We were assigned Range Operation. We have no experience in this field and were not sure what information had to be maintained. We decided that we needed a range tasking system. System Request Summary The range tasking system would receive incoming requests for training from our higher headquarters. It needs to assign a team to operate the range. It needs to monitor the amount of man hours are used to run the range and the total man-hours the team has worked per week. It needs to keep track of the unit that is being trained and the total size of that unit. It also needs to calculate the percentage that passed and/or needs to be re-trained. Preliminary Investigation Findings 1. The system that is in place now is very confusing to the untrained person. Information is sometimes lost or misplaced. The system that is in place repeats a certain step twice and this causes duplication of information. 2. The current system assigned individuals to certain responsibilities on the ranges and took the power away from the team leader. The team leader was unable to keep track of man-hours because they never knew when they personnel worked. The team leader was overworked looking for personnel that...

...journalism, fuelled by profitability in the wake of government reductions in subsidies. In addition to political liberalisation, competitive media markets, and degrees of social and political ferment, journalistic and entrepreneurial agency is a factor, fostered by the protection of journalists from physical harm, jail, harassment through lawsuits, and restrictions on access to information. The watchdog and the market: The contradictory nature of the market is described as: "On one hand, market liberalization and competition have encouraged the emergence of, and in many places, also sustained, investigative reporting. But at the same time, market pressures are a major obstacle to its continued viability.” Where donor funding is available, non-profits sometimes take on the watchdog role. "They fill a gap in media systems where market, ownership, or political pressures make investigative reporting by commercial or state-owned media difficult if not impossible. These centers are involved in training and reporting and serve as models of excellence that are helping raise the standards of local journalism. Elsewhere, startup ventures by individual journalists are taking the lead in cutting-edge investigations. In Malaysia, the web-based news site Malaysiakini is filling the information gap in a...

A Critical Review of Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media by Sheila Coronel

...A Critical Review of Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media by Sheila Coronel Introduction In Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media, Sheila Coronel presents the role of media as a watchdog to keep the government in check. Coronel also examines the actual situation of the “watchdogging” by the media including its vulnerabilities to certain factors such as globalization, deregulation, economic impact, culture and many more. She presents the scenario in a form of research in which she shares her arguments and analysis as a veteran investigative journalist. This paper will review Coronel’s research as well as her primary arguments including her policy recommendations, and will evaluate the quality of Coronel’s research, writing, and focus. Summary Coronel begins his paper by reviewing the general premise of media as a watchdog of the society in monitoring government and exposing its excesses. She presents evidences on the retraction of this role around the world thanks to “globalization, the fall of authoritarian and socialist regimes, and the deregulation of the media worldwide.” To ponder on the watchdog role of media, Coronel asks the following important questions: Is the press acting as watchdog always desirable? In countries where the media are hobbled by draconian state restrictions or driven largely by the imperatives of profit-obsessed markets, is such a role even possible? What enabling conditions make a watchdog press...

Globalization of Sex Trafficking

...In Laura Maria Agustin’s Sex at the Margins, power-knowledge is exercised over individuals by way of controlling institutions and is carried out through such things as punishment, education, and protection. This utilization of power-knowledge as a method to understand “the cult of domesticity and attached ideas of moral reclamation and regulation” was interesting, especially with its application to sex work (Agustin 99). A startling example that was illustrated in “Rise of the Social” and thoroughly discussed in class was with respect to women who are active in charity. Agustin points out how a paradox is created because the women involved in philanthropic causes are generally from the middle- and upper-class. The question that was whether this was self-police and policing of others was raised. Was it that some women were morally superior? In other words, with relation to sex work or ‘prostitution,’ can it be seen that the women who want freedom and autonomy in some fashion restrain the freedom of “bad women.” Moreover, in connection to how women may have felt the need to go out and carve out their own profession, it seems plausible that women’s role in the 18th and 19th century as caregivers in the realm of home was a catalyze in propelling women into charity work. Nevertheless, is Agustin’s argument still valid and is she perhaps too harsh on the people doing good, considering that her argument is that by doing good someone else is always punished? In general, however, “Rise...

The author exposes potential flaws by raising very valid questions about the decisions made during the development of algorithms. These questions hook the reader and draws readers’ attention to the purpose of the article. On the issue of transparency of algorithms, the author points out that while some organizations are inherently transparent, some need to be pushed by the government. He cites “voluntarily examples” like Google’s biannual transparency report and “Government...

...ggrgegregrgregrg fefe A report or account is any informational work (usually of writing, speech, television, or film) made with the specific intention of relaying information or recounting certain events in a widely presentable form. Written reports are documents which present focused, salient content to a specific audience. Reports are often used to display the result of an experiment, investigation, or inquiry. The audience may be public or private, an individual or the public in general. Reports are used in government, business, education, science, and other fields. Reports use features such as graphics, images, voice, or specialized vocabulary in order to persuade that specific audience to undertake an action. One of the most common formats for presenting reports is IMRAD: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. This structure is standard for the genre because it mirrors the traditional publication of scientific research and summons the ethos and credibility of that discipline. Reports are not required to follow this pattern, and may use alternative patterns like the problem-solution format. Additional elements often used to persuade readers include: headings to indicate topics, to more complex formats including charts, tables, figures, pictures, tables of contents, abstracts, and nouns summaries, appendices, footnotes, hyperlinks, and references. Some examples of reports are: scientific reports, recommendation reports, white papers, annual reports, auditor's reports, workplace...

...As the director of a local television station I have two breaking news stories to share with our viewers. I have decided to report about the vote of the city council to close the city parks three days a week to save money. The second story we will report on will be the death of a celebrity. I decided to go with the council vote as my lead story because of the impact it has on the local population. Closing down the parks for three days will force the parents to find alternative places for their children to play. In today’s society children recreation is defined by Xbox, Wii and PlayStation. With rise of obesity among our children limiting the availability of the parks for the sake of money is poor politics. The city council should reconvene to find new approaches to saving money besides closing city parks. One submission is that we as a local television station can help promote a fund-raiser for the sole purpose of raising fund to keep the parks open for one or three of the days. Reporting on the death of a celebrity does not have the local concern of effect of the city parks story. Another reason I have chosen to make this my secondary story is that this story will possibly be reported on a larger media outlet. As a local television media we believe committed to our hometown citizens should be focus. Also putting the celebrity’s death second still keep our local informed of national news. By us reporting about the death of the actor will still maintain...

Fundamental of Business Writing

...Chapter One Introdution: Fundamentals of Business Writing I. The major differences between school writing and business writing School writing, typically in the form of essays, is aimed at impressing the audience, i.e. examiners. To score high, student writers have to use fairly complicated vocabulary and sentences in their written work. Business writers, however, mainly aim to communicate information to their colleagues, clients, and other associated parties. They are relatively free to use what language that can get the business done efficiently and effectively. II. Seven steps in the process of wring 1. clarifying your aim 2. identifying your readers 3. making a general plan 4. sketching a synopsis (大纲) 5. drafting your text 6. putting the draft aside 7. revising and editing ★ Writing is a recursive and creative process. The detailed plan is not adhered to in actual writing. Writers frequently come up with ideas that are activated in the process of writing. Writers read the text they have already produced to help generate more ideas. In effect, the writing process is no linear at all but is characterized by recursive ness and creativeness. III. Three principles of business writing 1. Clarity – means setting your message across clearly. (See detailed information on page 4) 2. Consideration – good business writers take their readers’ needs, problems, and reactions to the writing into consideration. And they...
