After review the reports from first quarter 2004, it has become apparent that action will be necessary. Through our examination of the first quarter 2004 reports, we have concluded three key areas to focus on. These include utilization of computer usage hours, how the results of the operations have been unprofitable, and how sales promotions are not tied to current levels of work. Our analysis begins with careful inspection of the variable and fixed costs of Salem Data Services. It is clear the variable costs equaling $32,640, do not contribute enough to covering the total fixed costs of $189,620. The other focus of the analysis lies in the re-evaluating the usage hours available for Commercial Sales. Currently the level of Commercial Sales is under utilized. Available hours need to be maximized to eliminate the current loss and begin to show growth and profit. We have included data...

...Case Study – Prestige Telephone Co. Company Profile Prestige Data Services is a subsidiary of Prestige Telephone Company, a public utility. They are a computer data service company that does data processing for the parent company in order to sell computer services. The company was opened in order to bring in additional revenue in order to offset increases in telephone rate increases. Throughout the three years of being in operation the subsidiary has been unprofitable. Case Question #1 Assuming Prestige Telephone’s demand for services will average 205 hours per week, what level of commercial sales of computer use would be necessary to break even each month? Given this analysis, is the subsidiary really a problem to Prestige? Solution Based on the breakeven analysis the subsidiary is a problem to Prestige. They are currently operating at an average demand of 205 hours per month. They need to operate at 1116.19 hours in order to break even. The additional, unexpected costs incurred along with the difficulty in finding customers have resulted in the subsidiary being unprofitable and unsustainable. Without bringing in additional customers to reach their breakeven point they should move forward with closing the subsidiary. ...Salem Telephone Co Case Study #2 Overview: Salem Telephone Company (STC) is a telephone company who is regulated by the state Public Service Commission. The state Public Service Commission encouraged public utilities under its jurisdiction to seek new sources of revenue and profits. This would reduce the need for rate increase that higher costs would otherwise bring. The company formed an agreement with the state Public Service Commission to create a subsidiary. Thus Salem Data Services (SDS) was created to perform data processing for the telephone company and sell computer products and services to other companies and organizations. The separation between the companies is because STC was a regulated utility and SDS is an unregulated company. The only restriction the state Public Service Commission had was the average monthly charges for services provided by SDS to STC is not to exceed $82,000. This was the estimated cost of equivalent services used by STC in the year 2000. With retaining the separation between the two companies all accounts of SDS were separated from STC. Lastly, each company paid the other for services from the other. During April 2004 the president of STC, Peter Flores met with SDS’s manager Cynthia Wu to discuss the condition of the company. SDS currently has yet to have a profitable month, but Wu feels the company is progressing well and needed more time to show profits. This raised a concern for Flores. Also, in 2003 STC’s income was at an all-time...

...by moving fixed costs into variable costs. ANALYSIS Salem Data’s variable expenses with respect to revenue hours are power expense and hourly salary. Their fixed expenses for revenue hours are rent, custodial services, computer leases, maintenance, depreciations of computer and office equipment and fixture, operations salaried staff, system development and maintenance, administration, sales, sales promotion and corporate services (Exhibit 3). Salem Data Services’ cost of power per revenue hour is $4.70. The hourly cost of personnel per revenue hour is $24. Therefore, the total variable cost per hour was $28.70 (Exhibit 2). The contribution margin statement (Exhibit 4) is based on the assumption of intracompany usage of 205 hours and commercial usage at the March level (138 hours). The...

I was also able to determine that commercial and residential bills get paid at different times based on the amount of them. We can also say that with the slope of .0166 (residential) means for each increase of one unit in X, the Y is estimated to increase .0166 units. On the other side the commercial business the slope of -0.191 for each increase of one unit in x, the Y is estimated to increase -0.191. The regression analysis for commercial represents 95.7% of our data, but we cannot say with 95% certainty that for residential customers that the size of the bill depends on when it gets paid...

...Group Assignment Part One Crime rates across Texansahomatucky June 20, 2011 In order to help the Justice Department in the state of Texkansahomatucky a map that highlights the high crime counties in the state has been created. In order to determine which counties are high crime and which are low crime one has to first do some statistical calculations. Using the data provided by the state, one must first calculate the total crimes for each county. This can be done by adding all of the violent crime categories together for each county individually. Equation: (Murder + Rape + Robbery + Aggressive Assault = total violent crime). Then one must add the property crime categories together for each county individually. Equation: (Burglary + Larceny + MV Theft = total property crime) Once the total violent crime and total property crime numbers are obtained then they can be added together to obtain the total crime per county. Equation example: (Kent County total violent crime + Kent County total property crime = Kent County total crime). Once the total crime per county has been calculated the results can be used to aid in finding the crime rate. However, to find an accurate crime rate for each county the proper equation must be used. It wouldn’t be fair to determine the crime rate for each county based upon the total number of residents divided by the total crime of the county because each county varies in both size and population and these factors...

...Marketing Final Project Team 1 Ryan Marshall, Manuela Antonova, and Joshua Booth Mr. Coffee Smart Optimal Brew WeMo Enabled Marketing Plan Executive Summary A recent primary research survey has found that 70% of occasional coffee drinkers view the Mr. Coffee brand as an inferior or budget coffee brewing device that does not make a superior cup of coffee (Appendix, Opinion survey). Brands such as Keurig, Cuisinart, and DeLonghi inspire more thoughts of quality coffee than Mr. Coffee. Other consumers are opting to spend several dollars per cup of coffee at coffee houses such as Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, Dunkin Donuts, and even McDonalds (Appendix, Opinion survey). Mr. Coffee is a part of American iconography appearing in movies, books, and other arenas of pop culture. It appeared in loosely translated interpretations in the Back to the Future movie trilogy of the as 1980’s as “Mr. Fusion”, it was referenced in the TV show Seinfield, and in the title of the short story by Raymond Carver, “Mr. Coffee and Mr. Fixit.” According to a recently conducted survey Mr. Coffee was the most identifiable home coffee brewer. Brand recognition is not a problem in the current marketing environment. Mr. Coffee has many entries into the home coffee making market. Most of the devices are on the lower end of the price scale and easily obtained at every local big box store. These devices are sold alongside similar devices presented by direct competitors with very little differentiation. Recent...

...feel free to contact any member of our Employee Attitudes Task Force for further questions or clarifications. Question 1: One question I’d like your team to consider is whether we should care about employees’ attitudes. Although a satisfied workforce is one of our strategic goals, we need to be sure, before we contemplate specific actions, that such actions are warranted. In order to determine whether we should care about employees’ attitudes, our group conducted a correlation between overall job satisfaction and average performance. We found that there was a statistically significant correlation of 0.359 between the two. Therefore, it is important that Pluto Candy Company should care about its employees’ attitudes. Refer to appendix A for detailed data analysis. Question 2: How does the job satisfaction level of our employees compare to those of comparable organizations? Are we high or low? From the data given to us by benchmark organizations, we determined that job satisfaction in Pluto Candy Company varies with respect to other benchmark organizations.
