...Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-68076-9 - NSSC Accounting Module 3 Hansie Hendricks Excerpt More information Unit 1 Ratios and interpretation As we learnt in our earlier studies, accounting information is used to answer two key questions about a business: • Is it making a profit? • Are its assets sufficient to meet its liabilities? We have also considered the form in which different types of businesses prepare their final accounts. Now we need to examine in more detail how these accounting statements can be used to assess a business’ performance and progress. There are two stages in this process: 1 Analysis This is the detailed examination of various aspects of a business’ performance. To make comparisons (with other businesses or for the same business over a period of time) easier and more meaningful, the results are expressed as percentages or ratios, e.g. the percentage of gross profit to sales, or the working capital ratio. 2 Interpretation Here the results of analysis are used to judge a business’ performance. This is done by making comparisons a with other similar businesses, usually within the same year, e.g. was the gross profit to sales percentage last year better or worse than the average for the trade or industry? b for the same business over a number of years, e.g. has the trend of the gross profit percentage to sales over the last five years been up or down? We will also examine the extent to which analysis and interpretation are useful tools for owners...

...Management 521 Scenario Questions Joe Maldonado MGT 521 October 4, 2011 University of Phoenix Management 521 Scenario Questions Marketing Manager, Travel Agency Manager, and owner of a small company are occupations in three separate positions for evaluation. Within each paragraph is the scenario identifying the communication channel used, “formal or informal” (Organizational Behavior, 2011, p. 344) with defending and supporting reasoning. While serving in the Air Force, superiors assigned multiple, short timeframe, high priority taskings, much like the first scenario. Within Scenario number one, is a role of a Marketing Manager, in which to develop a new marketing strategy for an exciting new beverage with worldwide distribution. The timeframe for this strategy is the end of the week to the vice president. With such a short time to complete this complex tasking would require a formal communication channel, in which to explain the direction to the team with the requirement and with the tasking deadline. Therefore, the final presentation is due Thursday, for the meeting with the vice president on Friday. The presentation to the vice president will occur on Friday will dictate a formal communication channel. Scenario number two, is a role of a travel agency manager, in which first thing in the morning, the username and password to company application system does not allow anyone to access the application. This immediately caused a work stoppage, to where none of...

...was projected to elastic and inelastic collisions. One cart would be stationary while another was plunged towards it or they were both moving. As a result the elastics final kinetic energy was pretty much equal to the initial kinetic energy. In the inelastic case the final kinetic energy is normally less than the initial kinetic energy. Introduction: There were two main goals when performing this experiment. This first goal being to accurately demonstrate linear momentum conservation for collisions and classify whether they are elastic or inelastic. The second goal was to measure the energy loss in inelastic collisions. During this experiment we measured initial and final velocities, momentum, change in momentum, initial and final kinetic energies, and change in kinetic energies. The change in kinetic energies was what distinguished whether it was an inelastic or elastic collision. Theory and Derivations: The velocities of two carts were measured as a function of time. Two carts were attached to rotary motion sensors...

...Personal values affect on how each person belief system is and how each person will portray these values in his or her everyday life. Many managers possess a set of values to influence the company and the people around them to benefit and direct the organization using techniques and strategies to accomplish its goals as a team. Kathy, a manager at Kudler Fine Foods, sets the tone for her business and evaluate how her employees interact with the core values she sets within her organization. Therefore, personal values can affect the performance as a manager and an employee at Kudler Fine Foods, which shapes the organizational culture. According to my assessment on my personal values from the Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory states that my ethical perspectives focus more on the consequences of my actions, which I look for evidences to base my decisions. Examining Kathy’s perspectives on how she manages Kudler Fine Foods and how she seeks for growth do align with my own perspectives in some ways. For example, the Del Mar location is not doing too well on sales and the market; therefore, Kathy decides to close this location in the near future and re-evaluate her plans on opening another location but with careful research. However, I do not agree with Kathy’s management style in handling the selection of her inventory, her catering business, and financial management because these different job functions occupy most of her time. For example, Kathy is the only one who handles...
