...ACID RAIN Acid rain is a mixture of deposited material, both wet and dry, coming from the atmosphere containing excessive amount of nitric acid and sulfuric acids. The rain is acidic in nature because of the presence of pollutants coming from the smoke from the cars and industries. Acid rain can occur in form of rain, snow, fog or dry material that settle to earth. The level of Acidity is determined by calculating the pH level in the water drops. Normal rainwater is slightly acidic. The pH level of normal rainwater ranges between 5.3 and 6.0. The normal rainwater is acidic because the carbon dioxide and water react with each other and form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is a very weak acid. When the pH level of rainwater falls below this range, it becomes acid rain (conserveegergyfuture.com, 2013). Acid rain affects plants directly and decreases the quality of soil and reduced fertility of the soil. The adverse effects of acid rain are severe where there is more concentration of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide (science.opposingviews, 2015). Acid rain has many negative effects, on lakes, streams, wetlands, and other aquatic environments. The primary reason for acid rains is air pollution. Acid rain is caused by large amount of pollutants it can be minimized by conserving energy and reducing pollution. I believe if we do not take preventive measures for acid rains future generation may face severe consequences (environment.nationalgeographic, 2015). Sulfur and Nitrogen are...

...| Acid Rain | .PrinceEcologyApril 3O, 2013 | | | Abstract Acid Rain is a mixture of wet deposition and dry deposition. Acid Rain is caused by a surplus of the chemicals sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide caused by air pollution. Air pollution comes from two main sources man made sources and natural sources. Man made sources come from combustion of coal used in power plants and exhaust pipes and natural sources come from volcanoes. They have many effects on the environment such as runoffs that lead chemicals into the streams and humans with respiratory illnesses that can worsen if the chemicals become too acidic. There are many ways to reduce acid rain such as cleaning exhaust pipes and using alternative energy sources. Acid rain measures a pH of about 5.3 Introduction: Acid rain is a mixture of dry and wet deposition from the atmosphere containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. The formation of acid rain result from both natural sources, such as volcanoes , and man-made sources, primarily emissions of sulfur dioxde and resulting from fossil fuel combustion. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released from power plants and other sources, the wind blows these compounds across the enviroment. There...

...Acid Rain – Save the Environment Acid rain, or any other form of precipitation with high nitric and sulfuric acid levels is when the precipitation has a lower pH than natural unpolluted rainwater, 5.5 (National Geographic). Acid rain is the result of combustion of fossil fuels which releases acid chemicals into the air (Wysession, Michael). It is a problem in the world since it effects natural and man-made environments as well as other factors in negative ways. The unpolluted water that rains down on us is always slightly acidic with a pH of around 5.6. This is because the rainwater from the clouds react with the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) that is in the air. It is in the air due to that we convert the oxygen that we inhale into CO2 inside of our bodies, which we later exhale. This results in a solution called Carbonic Acid. (Wysession, Michael) Water | + | Carbon Dioxide | | Carbonic Acid | H20 | + | CO2 | | H2CO3 | Rain counts as acid rain when it goes below the unpolluted rain pH, 5.6. The acidity of acid rain can be as low as 2.7 on the pH scale depending on the ratio of chemical acids and unpolluted rainwater. However, the usual pH of acid rain is around 4.0 which is more than 10 times more acidic than unpolluted rainwater. (Wysession, Michael) Acid rain can be caused by natural sources such as volcanoes. However, the main cause of acid rain is when the acidic chemicals sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) are released into the air by the combustion of...

...the Rain By E.Hemingway The story under analysis is written by a well-known American writer of XX century Ernest Hemingway. One of his main topics was animals as symbols and we can see this tendency in the title of the story. Cat in the Rain was written in the 1920’s. It is about an American couple who spends their holidays in a hotel in Italy. It is a rainy day and the American woman sees a cat on the street and she wants to protect it from the raindrops. When she goes out of the hotel and wants to get the cat, it has already gone. As wife returns to the hotel room, she starts a conversation with her husband George and tells him how much she wants to have a cat and a lot other things. Her husband is not interested at all. Later there is a knock on the door and a maid brings a cat for the American woman. The text of the story is not homogeneous: it presents a piece of narration intercepted with dialogues, descriptions and open ending. It is also divided into several parts according to the change of the place of narration: in the room, in the hotel and outside The general slant of the story is emotional, pathetic, depressive and tense. As the author was a war journalist and a representative of the lost generation. Cat in the Rain contains several semantic fields. The semantic field of colour: bronze, blue, green; of nature: sea, palms, rain, cat; of emotions: liked, smiled, disappointed, laughed, feeling of being of supreme importance, tired; of water: sea, rain, wet...

...the Rain’ by Ernest Hemingway ‘Cat in the Rain’ is the short story of Ernest Hemingway written in the 1920’s. It is about an American couple that spends their holidays in an Italian hotel. In the story, ‘Cat in the Rain’ Ernest Hemingway sets the scene for his fiction in a hotel room in Italy on a rainy day. On the first reading of this short story it can be easily interpreted as a wife nagging her husband, who is lying in bed while reading a book but after analyzing the story carefully it is not difficult to see the indifference of man to the woman. This paper aims to analyze the theme ‘lack of communication’ in terms of the story ‘Cat in the Rain’. It is a rainy day and the American woman sees a cat in the rain, which she wants to protect from the raindrops. When she goes out of the hotel, which is kept by an Old Italian who really seems to do everything to please that woman, and wants to get the cat, it is gone. After returning to the hotel room, she starts a conversation with her husband George, who is reading all the time, telling him how much she wants to have a cat and other things, for instance her own silver to eat with. Her husband seems to be annoyed by that and not interested at all. At the end of the story there is a knock on the door and the maid stands there holding a cat for the American woman in her hands. In the story, the woman is an ‘isolated woman’ because of the indifference of her husband. Although the scene is quite romantic such as spring and rain, the...

...November 13, 2013 A Deep Psychoanalytical Interpretation of “Cat in the Rain” Hemingway’s meaning to the “Cat in the Rain” is more than just the literal cat in the rain. Yes, the story talks and discusses a cat that is stuck in the rain; but, this is not the true meaning of Hemingway’s story. The character the “American Wife” shows similar elements of confinement and restraint as to the cat in the story. The constant obsession for the cat in the story from the wife shows that she thinks of herself as the cat and wants to be freed from this rain. Two Americans are stuck in a hotel where their room is facing the sea, a public garden and a war monument. A rainy day it seems to be there somewhere in Italy and the American wife is looking out the window and she spots a cat under the table that is trying to keep dry from the rain. The American wife begins to express a desire for many things in the story. She tells her husband if she cannot have fun on this trip that she should get anything she wants. She starts to request material goods and the story shows that she requests these things due to the lack of intangible goods such as love and affection. The American wife suddenly becomes obsessed with the idea of saving this random street cat. You can metaphorically say the cat is her and she is trying to save the cat from the rain and in the Americans wife case the rain is the lack of love and affection. But, George (her husband) ignores her desires and treats...

...The Hollywood film Rain Man is about the Autistic disorder Savant syndrome. In Rain Man, Raymond Babbitt (played by Dustin Hoffman) has Savant Syndrome and his brother Charlie Babbitt (played by Tom Cruise) finds out about Raymond being his brother and that he is good with numbers so Charlie decides to use his brother to make money. Over the course of the time that Charlie and Raymond are together, they become closer and Charlie is not just using Raymond for money. Hollywood portrays Savant syndrome accurately compared to what the APA says about Savant. Savant is a unique form of autism that has its own special skills, which set Savant apart from all other forms of autism. The most common skills found in savant patients are splinter skills. Some of the most common behaviors associated with splinter skills are memorization of music, sports, trivia, maps and historical facts. There are two other forms of savant, talented savants and prodigious savant. Talented savant is when a patient is very talented in one given field such as math. The word Autism can be define in many ways, but according to one definition, “Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized be impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before three years-old. Dustin Hoffman's role in the movie Rain Man does fit the description of autistic persons. In the movie Rain Man, the things that affected For example, when Raymond heard...

...theory” which means that the surface of the story is simple, but below the surface is the structure more complex. He had a high degree of detail in description of places/things and his typically themes in his stories were love, war, loss, wildness etc.. Cat in the rain Writtin by Hemingway and publised in 1925. An American couple is on vacation in Italy. The American wife sees a cat outside in the rain and she wants it very bardly, so she goes out to get it but the cat is gone. She goes back to her hotel room and starts a conversation with her husband. She tells him the things she wants but her husband doesnt seem to be interested at all. But in the end, the padrone comes with a cat to her. There is a very long description of the enviroment (typical Hemingway style). ”In the good weather there was always an artist with his easel. Artists liked the way the palms grew and the bright colors of the hotels facing the gardens and the sea.” First of all, he descripes the enviroment like it’s summer but then he writes that it’s raining. It’s sympolizes their relationship. First it was great and they were happy but then it all turned to grey, rain and very cold. The American wife sees a cat outside in the rain in the beginning of the story. The cat sympolizes her need to be responsible for something and her loneliness. She sees the cat as a baby who needs to be taking care of. But her reaction when she sees the cat is a little bit childish. She uses the word ”kitty” which...

...In the short story "The Rain Came" by Grace Ogot, customs and traditional beliefs leave Oganda having to face death for her people to have rain. Oganda is to be sacrificed in order to end the drought that her people face. She is the daughter of the chief. In fact, she is the only daughter of the chief. Heart-broken, the chief knows he must give up his only daughter for the good of the people he serves. In this story, the chief is a perfect example of what a leader must go through in order to save his people. Although he loves his only daughter, he is willing to sacrifice her for the rains to come and save his people from drought. His people come first, even before his precious family. This is a great quality that a leader must have in order to truly serve. This chief can be compared to a similar story involving the sacrifice of an only son. God was willing to sacrifice his only son Jesus Christ so that his people could be saved. In the end, God's only son is raised from the dead and lives on triumphantly. In much the same way, Oganda is rescued by Osinda and taken to safety. She was willing to give her life, and that is all that it took to please the gods. When Osinda takes her to safety, the rains come down and her people are saved. The story ends with the reader wondering if she will ever see her mother and father again. If not, the price has been paid without the actual sacrificing of Oganda's life. She will forever be separated from the...
