...Janus Carpe Diem, or seize the day, is an often used phrase and it summarizes a lot of individuals way of living. It has become a way of seeing beyond past mistakes and failures and a way to get through the day with optimism and joy. But seizing the day, or living in the moment, requires you to let go of the past. You cannot hold on to the past, while living in the moment. This is the essential problem for the main character Andrea in the short story, Janus by Ann Beatie, she carries her past on her shoulders like it was the weight of the world. But how does past ruin the present? The main character Andrea is a divided individual, who is torn between a love from the past and her husband. First of all, Andrea is a divided self in the way that she is indecisive towards her husband and lover. Her lover made an ultimatum, which is seen in page 47 lines 38-43: “Her lover had said that she was always too slow to know what she really loved… When she would not decide in his favour, would not change her life and come to him, he asked what made her think she could have it both ways.” This clearly shows how Andrea cannot decide whether to leave her husband or not. Moreover, the quote shows how well the lover knows her compared to how little her husband knows her, take the following example: “When her husband first noticed the bowl, he had peered into it and smiled briefly… Her husband had pronounced the bowl “pretty,” and he had turned away without picking it up to examine it. He...

...A Supreme Court decision is needed for a case that can change labor and employment drastically. Mark Janus is a social worker that feels as if his rights are being taken from him because he opted out of joining a union but must still pay ‘agency fees. Instead of union dues, he is given a fair-share fee that is roughly 78 percent of the full union dues. Janus is disputing that this fee is a violation of his First Amendment rights because, collectively bargaining with a government employer is basically persuading the government, and fair-share fees are a method of forced speech and association that deserves intensified constitutional inspection. AFSCME argues that the Abood model should be continued, because it stops “free riders” from getting...

...Gorsuch poised to decide fate of union case before SCOTUS. Neil M. Gorsuch may well be the deciding vote on a critical union rights case to be decided before the United States Supreme Court this term. In the case of Janus v. AFSCME a decision is expected in June. It is typical of SCOTUS to release the major case decisions at the end of their current year term. The case of Janus v. AFSCME deals with union fees, termed agency fees or fair share fees, which are collected under work contracts in unionized shops designed to reimburse the union for the cost of services that result in providing benefit to non-union workers, due to the actions of the union taken on behalf of union members. Under law, unions are required to collectively bargain on behalf of every worker in a unionized shop, once the union becomes the exclusive representative for that workplace regardless of whether all workers employed are union members or...

...Response #2 In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, of gates, doors, passages and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, as he looks to the future and to the past. In the story ‘Janus’, Andrea is is unable to forget about her past, which she represents using a specific item. In this case, the symbol is a bowl. The reader is able to learn about how to bowl came to be in her possession and what it represents. Andrea uses the bowl as a way to dwell on her past, which she is seemingly not willing to let go. “The bowl was a mystery, even to her. It was frustrating because her involvement with the bowl contained a steady sense of unrequited good fortune; it would have been easier to respond...

...the European Union. Janus Skot, the senior director of Arla Foods Latin America and the Caribbean (LATAM), was attempting to build a competitive advantage in Latin America because of their milk deficit. Janus was slowly accomplishing his business goals by developing a strategy to work with local partners to integrate into local retail chains. Janus could not do this by himself; he had a team supporting him. Janus received his MBA from Denmark and held many positions in various Danish firms. He began working for Arla as an export manager and after work a few different international positions; he branched off into his own international distribution market known as LATAM. Other European professionals that were well versed in international trade supported him. Beret Jeanette Haven Andersen and Lars Tang Mikkelsen were two of these people. Arla Food has an ethnocentric orientation because they only employed European professionals in the key positions. “An ethnocentric company operates under the assumption that tried and true headquarters’ knowledge and organizational capabilities can be applied in other parts of the world” (Keegan 17). This is seen when Janus hired other European graduates to fill his key positions. They easily filled those positions because they had the proper credentials and educational history that Janus needed. Although the company is mainly ethnocentric, they have an advantage because a lot of the people hired by Janus had experiences in...

...Investment Outlook from Bill Gross September 2015 Sizing Up the Global Economy Size does matter you know. There are basketball players, NFL linemen, and the more popular but unmentionable allusion to the bedroom that makes my point, although the older one gets, the more irrelevant playing basketball and football become, if you get my drift. More interesting to me than any of the above, however, is the application of size and its relevance to the animal kingdom. Randy Newman raised eyebrows and a goodly number of hackles three decades ago with his “Short People” ditty – “Short people got no reason, short people got no reason to live” he crooned, and the vertically disadvantaged got mad and the tall people laughed and the world went about its business of favoring size – in this case – when measured from head to toe. Mr. Newman’s parody was so radical that I suspect he was asking us to think, as opposed to expressing an opinion, and if so, he was and may still be more of a Buddhist than a bigot. But I speak not about the size of people here – but to animals of the more ordinary kind. I am not what you might think of as an animal lover. I’ve had some great dogs and a rather well publicized cat by the name of “Bob”, but on the whole I’ve become more of a life respecter than an inveterate petter of felines or canines. But there’s something about the size of a living thing that increases or diminishes my sense of caring and I’m not sure why that should...

...JOHN A. QUELCH HEATHER BECKHAM Culinarian Cookware: Pondering Price Promotion On November 6, 2006, the vice president of marketing of Culinarian Cookware (Culinarian), Donald Janus, and the senior sales manager, Victoria Brown, met to discuss whether or not the company should offer a price promotion for the company’s line of premium cookware in the coming year. These two executives had very different views on the value of a price promotion and the role it could play in the company’s marketing strategy. Janus expressed his opinion first: Brown knew that Janus was determined above all else that Culinarian should remain known as a high-quality product and an elite brand—“an American icon” was Janus’s term—and that all good things would flow from that status. He grew wary when he perceived, rightly or wrongly, a hint of a threat to that status. Still, Brown was obliged to be candid. She said: Do No I believe we need to be bolder with our price promotions. The number one complaint that my sale force hears from the trade accounts is the lack of consistent and meaningful price discount events. Providing a 30% discount promotion will increase commitment and support from the trade and will boost our overall brand awareness. It’ll also provide us with new customers who would otherwise not purchase because they feel the suggested retail is too high and encourage current customers to immediately purchase additional pieces. And yes, I think if the data in the consulting study...

...When thinking of science fiction television programs, one usually thinks of aliens, space ships, and laser blasters, this tends to shed a more childish light on the genre and most people tend to dismiss it as being no more than mindless entertainment. While there has certainly been a surplus of the campy science fiction shows on the air, some shows have used the science fiction genre to tackle serious social issues as well. This essay will take a look at two shows 54 years apart and will analyze how both use social concerns of the time period and create memorable narratives that speculate about human behavior and interactions. The first show this essay will look at is the generation defining classic The Twilight Zone (1959-1964), and the second show is a modern cult hit from the United Kingdom Utopia (2013-2014). //Through a comparative analysis of the episode “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” from The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) and “Episode 5” of the British cult hit, Utopia (2013-2014) this essay illustrates how the science fiction genre can be and has been used generation after generation to highlight certain social issues. Whereas The Twilight Zone uses America’s anxieties of communism and consumer culture to cause paranoia in the early sixties, Utopia uses big business, government conspiracies, and overpopulation in a plot that stirs up concern for the environment. Ultimately this essay will illustrate how social issues lay the foundation for a compelling science fiction...

...Jenny Jones 3-3-09 English 101 B Talking Dirty to My God! My paper will be on 2 different poems and there from the book “Talking Dirty to the Gods”. The first poem is called Silkworm and the second poem is called Janus. Both the poems focus on the culture, beauty of life and history. My paper will in tell about the art of poetry and the art of how to tell a story inside of a story. When slaves were to tell stories, they couldn’t write down there dreams or there life and what they went through, so they were to say it in a story form. So they, meaning the kids would never forget there heritage. Therefore, when they became slaves they would sing songs and they would also make other things to remember there past to show there future. The first poem I chose was Silkworm on page.53 when reading the poem it made me think about love and how it was taken away from a lot of African Americans. In the first line it says “they made a fancy catch for a nightgown out of me”. When I first read this poem I, at first didn’t understand what the book was insinuating, but after reading that line about three times it made me think about the slaves and there body being taken advantage of and body being sold as if we were animals to be bought and used for pleasure. To look at this in a different way would be, were you are made to be someone else’s toy and to also not have a real purpose...

...Throughout history a people's hopes have enabled them to triumph against all odds. The militiamen of colonial America were able to protect their independence from the British, who at the time had the largest, most powerful military in the world. In more recent years, the passengers of a commercial airliner included in the 9/11 tragedy were able to crash their plane before it reached its unknown, but surely, life-devastating destination. These were ordinary people were able to overtake armed, savagely trained terrorists. They were empowered by the hope of saving lives, which they did through their brave sacrifice. This kind of hope inspires many emotions and feelings. It allows people to convince themselves that what they want to happen will happen. This effect travels far beyond the mind. As hope strengthens ones mental ability, it allows a person to fully utilize him or herself. This hope is both a drive and inspiration. It works for positive and negative causes, but it does work to strengthen and empower a person. In the novel, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown, several characters are empowered by hope; a hope that is the inspiration that causes people to be all that they can be. Robert Langdon, a scholar of religious symbology and professor at Harvard University, made a life changing decision based on hope. Langdon was phoned by a total stranger in the middle of the night. This stranger, Maximillian Kohler, was demanding to see Langdon in person. Langdon rejected this demand...

...Alternate Management Styles The micro-management trait is symptomatic of the autocratic and more historic classical management style. The early 20th century saw multiple studies and experiments where the traditional way was challenged and the theory of Behavioral Management was born. The Behavioral Management Theory, based on the idea that greater performance will be achieved by increased worker satisfaction by that managers need to realize they are the leaders of the organization. The Hawthorne study, conducted by Elton Hall, was originally intended to understand why losses in productivity occurred. What they discovered was employees were more productive if they believed they were receiving additional attention from the managers. Based on this study and further research, the theory developed that employees would achieve greater satisfaction and productivity if managers focused on their employees through two way communications, trust and respect and a “reward system” which encompassed training or enrichment, job advancement, involvement in the company culture and improving the working environment. The Empowerment Theory of Management Seen as an evolution of the Behavioral Management Theory, the Empowerment Theory of Management also centers around the employee and their contribution to the company. As defined in the online Business Dictionary, the Empowerment Theory is “A management practice of sharing information, rewards, and power with employees so that they can...
