This show has expanded into a clothing line and its cast has become so infamous that even if you do not watch the show you still know their names. Additionally, it has created a speech code for its dedicated viewers, such as the acronym GTL (gym, tan, laundry). Because this show has been and continues to be a success it brings some questions to mind. Why did people decide to watch the show? Why did they keep watching? What do they find so entertaining? And why has it become so popular? Through the concepts of Reception Theory it is shown that the show’s popularity is due to how the audience interprets the show’s media texts as entertainment. Real states that reception theory helps us “explore media culture by analyzing the complex, varied and intriguing ways that readers decode and interpret the texts of media” (pg. 94). Jimmy Cross from the story “The Things They Carried.” Jimmy Cross is the leader of Alpha Company in the war of Vietnam, although he seems like he is not part of it. “He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war […] but then he would slip away into day dreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey Shore” (p.279). This quote clearly shows that he was living in a parallel world between the war that he was living at that moment and his obsessed love for Martha. During the war Jimmy Cross had two obsessions with his love back home Martha. The first obsession that Jimmy shows is that he thinks all the time that “she was a virgin, he [and that he] was almost sure.” (p.274). Another quote that can be used as an example is how he describes her from a photo that she sent him as a souvenir “Her legs, he thought, were almost certainly the legs of a virgin, dry and without hair, the left knee cocked and carrying her entire weight” (p.276). Canania Local Communities (GE 100-01) Brother Isaiah Walker February 10, 2015 Irish and I went to Hukilau beach here in Laie, just next to Temple beach for the Local Community class for “Bleach Cleanup and Research Project.” Our goals were to cleanup the beach shore and even the nearby area and pick our favorite one. Upon cleaning the beach by picking-up garbage in the shore and putting it to a garbage bag (Images 1.0), we found some interesting garbage that is lying on the sand of Hukilau beach. Images 1.0 On the top from the left is a piece of fine plastic net that looks like a protective net to cover a brand new basketball. Next is a piece of green net that is obviously used for fishing, and lastly is a deteriorating kind of rope that is tied together. Among the three, the blue plastic net is our favorite. We searched in the Internet and found out that the blue plastic net is actually a short fishing landing net, sold by a seller online in Walmart called shop411.com owned and operated by IAC Search & Media, Inc., and has headquarters in Oakland, California, with offices throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. In the other hand, although the short fishing landing net is a helpful tool in fishing, people who owns it should be responsible in using it, especially on disposing it if not usable anymore.
