Since the factories and corporations were closed, people had no source of income. There was also a glitch in the banking system so everyone who had a bank or savings account lost everything in their account. When people got word of this situation they went to the banks to try to cash out all of their money. This caused a big interruption in the banks counting systems. ...players on the field and the umpire himself. More often than not even the players and the umpire didn’t know for sure. A perfect example of a famous blown call is the Armando Galaaraga and Jim Joyce’s not so perfect game. On June 2, 2010 Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Armando Galaaraga had a perfect game going into the last out of the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians until umpire Jim Joyce called what should have been the last Cleveland out safe at first.(Johnson) After networks showed the slow motion replay to the fans at home, we could clearly see that the batter was out by at least two steps. The blown call had fans up at some went so far as to call for Jim Joyce’s resignation among other things. Some even went so far as to vandalize his wiki page and start up a web site called firjimjoyce.com. All the while, the only person to be nonchalant about the whole thing was the one person who should be upset- Armando Galaaraga. In fact Armando and Joyce teamed up and co-wrote a book about the game and the infamous blown call. The controversy brought about by the call has led many to argue for expanded use of instant replay in baseball which many feel would take away from the human element. With the introduction of television, broadcast deals brought the introduction of big money for big market teams. This big money has lead to a major shift in competitive balance....

...case is set, Enterprise had $8.2 billion in revenue, approximately 818,000 vehicles, more than 6,500 locations, and more than 61,000 full-time and part-time employees. From 1980 through 2005, the company’s revenues grew at a compound annual rate of 20.5 percent. Now well into their 5th decade of doing business, Enterprise was founded in 1957 by Jack Taylor, who began leasing cars while working with a car dealer in St. Louis, Missouri. When his customers lost the use of their cars due to accidents or the need for repairs, Jack saw the opportunity to rent them replacement vehicles. This led to the creation of Enterprise Rent-A-Car in 1962, a company which for much of its history focused exclusively on the "home-city" rental replacement market – local branches near our customers’ homes and businesses rather than at the airport. From the beginning, Enterprise has based its growth strategy on a simple philosophy. Jack Taylor believed that by taking care of customers and employees first, profits would take care of themselves. Taylor focused on doing "whatever it took" to satisfy customers. He hired primarily university graduates and promoted them rapidly, putting them in charge of branch offices that they ran basically as independent businesses. Managers earned most of their compensation based on the profitability of the branch or branches for which they...

The Good and the Great

...Good to Great Book Analysis By Zain Muzammil Jim Collins “Good to Great” sold 3 million copies and became one of the top sellers in its genre. In the book, Collins takes up a daunting challenge in the book: identifying and evaluating the factors and variables that allow a small fraction of companies to make the transition from merely good to truly great. The extensive research conducted by Jim Collins and his team of analysts provides extravagant turnarounds of a few successful companies that were able to turn themselves from merely great to the greatest in the industry. Jim Collins believe that a great companies are always accompanied by “Great Leaders”, and he states them as Level 5 leadership. Great leaders cannot be selfish nor can they let their egoistic nature- from the position- to with-held the success of the company. Rather Jim narrates that they should be humble and modest. Ken Iverson, who lead Nucor’s transformation from bankruptcy to being one of the most successful companies in the world, was reported as being one of the most humble and modest CEO by board member Jim Hlavacek. Another key factor that Collins underscores as a part of Good to Great is the nature of the leadership team. He coins it as “First who and then what”. It is very important for a company to illustrate and reflect on the kind of leadership that a company has. If you have all the right people on the bus who willing to accomplish the unthinkable only then can a company...

With falling revenues and margins, Blue Star became an acquisition target and was bought by Anthum, a Fortune 100 company. At the conclusion of the deal Anthum brought in an injection of cash, a reputation for operational excellence, and a new vice president of sales, Jim Blaylock. Steve was initially impressed with Jim’s freshness and energy; he was constantly touting “Midwestern values” and the “work ethic of the Mid-west.” However, the sales management team soon became disenchanted with his views: Steve and his sales team were working 70 to 80 hours a week and becoming exhausted and frazzled. Moreover, Jim’s interactions with internal and external clients were lessons in poor human relations. He seemed to seek confrontations, and as time passed, his behavior became steadily more extreme.
