St. John the Baptist in Paintings

...The Evolution of John the Baptist in Christianity John the Baptist is one of a few recognized prophets in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. John lived by the Jordan River in Perea as an Essene Jew, around the time of Jesus’ ministry. Many know John as a non-divine apocalyptic preacher who claimed baptism would help one get into heaven, and it would be disadvantageous to ignore baptism. John is relevant to understanding historical Jesus not only because he baptized Jesus but because of their conflicting similarities. John and Jesus were both apocalyptic preachers, in the Essene Jewish sub-group, and popular during antiquity. Many scholars actually believe John was more popular in antiquity. Because of his greater popularity, many argue who kick started Christianity John or Jesus? One can see this argument through artistic paintings of John. Art was an important media for communication during antiquity. As Professor Boccaccini mentioned in lecture, most people in antiquity could not read; therefore, they used paintings to communicate. Painters use symbolic elements in their paintings to portray a message. These symbolic elements, such as red for matador, acted as stories or religious instruction (Boccaccini). Just as a written source, one can extract information from these paintings to find out about the historical character John. The first popular painting of John the Baptist originated in the 12th Century, right after the fourth crusade. During this time, medieval...

...philosophy, and man being master of many things were all resurgence during this time. One particular painting to be analyzed for an example of Southern Italian style is Giuliano Burgiardini, Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist, 510. Giuliano Burgiardini painting conveys the typical Southern Italian style with its composition in a pyramidal fashion, the particular way the bodies are depicted, and use of chiaroscuro of shadowing that differentiates it from Northern style. To continue on forth, the composition of the painting must be taken into account as well as Giuliano use of color, light and shadow as evidence of Southern Italian style. It must be noted, the painting is considered historical because it is depicting a significant event in time whether or not the event actually took place. In this particular historical painting you see depicted Mary and Christ with Saint John the Baptist in a pyramidal formation. The pyramidal formation and the fact that there are 3 figures were often seen in Southern Italian style. You can see Christ and St. John the Baptist as the corner base of the triangle and the head of Mary at the apex (Giuliano). A straight line can almost be drawn from the foot of Christ up to the head of Mary down to the foot of St. John the Baptist back to the foot of Christ to further accentuate that pyramidal shape. It was often seen even when there was a mass of people in a scene that they were often clustered in groups of threes. It also comes to attention...

Hamlet

...This first quote is from Act III, Scene ii of Hamlet. Hamlet is giving instructions to the troupe of actors that has come to the castle. These actors are going to perform a play within a play and Hamlet has added some lines to the play in the hope of exposing Claudius’ treachery. “Termagant” is an allusion to a god that Elizabethans believed Muslims worshipped. Herod is the king in the Bible that had John the Baptist beheaded and was responsible for Jesus’ death. This allusion is particularly important to Hamlet because like Claudius, Herod married his brother’s wife. John the Baptist told Herod that this was evil, so Herod’s wife Herodias instructed her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist, a request with which Herod complied. Hamlet is telling the players not to overdo their acting, not to be more like Herod than Herod himself. Hamlet wants the players to reveal the treachery in a subtle way. Hamlet is disturbed, although perhaps not mad, and although his anger against his mother and stepfather is intense, it tortures him more than them. Throughout the play, he is unable to act on his desires and seek revenge, as his father’s ghost has instructed him to do. I think he fears what might happen if the players are too bold. I think he wants to get back at Claudius through Claudius’ conscience, or at least get back at his mother, who is less stable than her husband. In the third quote, Hamlet is talking to Ophelia. It is right before the play is to be performed. He...

Where was this located? Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message (why does it matter what john wore?) when Jesus was baptizing did john baptized to at the same time?  “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”(after him comes someone more porwerful? Go Tell It on the Mountain: Battle of the Flesh

...the flesh. He uses a poetic literary style that shows the importance of the Bible and Christianity in African American life and literature during the early to mid 20th century. The novel is considered semi-autobiographical as the life of his main character, John Grimes, mirrors the author’s childhood life in many ways. James Baldwin, like John, grew up in Harlem with a strict stepfather who was a preacher. In the story, he tries to recreate the black fundamentalist, Pentecostal congregational worship in which he felt his family forced him in to(Olson, 1997). Like John Grimes, James was saved at the age fourteen. Despite the tense relationship with his stepfather, Baldwin became a Pentecostal youth minister for a couple of years. However, later in life he proclaimed himself to be an Atheist. Many critics believe that Baldwin also used this character to introduce the conflict of homosexuality that he later developed in other writings as a testament to struggles in his own life (Powers, 2005). Many of the characters names can be found in the Bible. John (the main character) is one of Jesus’ disciples and is credited for writing the Gospel of John in the New Testament (John, New Living Translation). There is also John the...

Have You Received the Holy Ghost Since You Believed

...certain disciples, 2 He said unto them , Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed ? And they said unto him , We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized ? And they said , Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is , on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied . 7 And all the men were about twelve. He who fills us with Himself is also our healer (Jehovah Rapha). The text positions us in the upper coast of Ephesus or the elevated regions of Asia Minor. The writer refers to the provinces of Fregia and Galatia. These regions were called upper because they were situated on the high table land in the interior of Asia Minor; While Ephesus was in the low maritime regions and was called the low country. When Paul arrived at Ephesus he met certain disciples or followers were those of John the Baptist. John the Baptist had been deceased for quite some time now. Apollos was also influenced by John’s baptism. When Paul met them engaged them in dialogue by asking them a question regarding their knowledge and experiences with the Holy Ghost (also called Holy Spirit and Spirit of God). Saint

...she provided for the Apostles. To include, she was also one of the three women who discovered the empty tomb of Jesus on the first Easter morning. This particular Saint has a feast day, and that is May 24th. Jessica is also a modern derivative of Saint Joan. Another idea that is interesting is that her real name is Joanna. Her name is mentioned throughout the Bible, as she is one of the women who was healed by Jesus. Years after she was healed, she was supported by him and his disciples. Interesting enough, she was also the wife of Chuza. Joanna lived in Israel, and one of the most important things she did was give John the Baptist a proper burial and funeral. Things that represented Joanna are an ointment box for healing, a pitcher and a basket for the hungry and the poor. One of the reasons that I chose this particular Saint is because she admired John the Baptist so much, that she gave him a proper funeral and burial. Joanna was also there when Jesus has resurrected and that makes me feel closer to God. Also, I feel like she is a good role model because she was always praying and feeding the hungry and the thirsty. To conclude, Joanna was always close to god. She always prayed and was very close to God and Jesus. She was one of the three women who went to the tomb to find Jesus not there. When he went back into Heaven, she covered his tomb in myrrh. In my opinion I also think she was brave. I think this because she had a husband who was controlled by King Herod. In this...

Apostle Paul the Baptist

...The Apostle Paul and John the Baptist Abstract The Apostle Paul and John the Baptist are two men with unique life experiences. They both lived two different lives, but are similar in so many ways. With their tenacity and zeal for the things of God, they both concurred the moment to present the way for us all! The Apostle Paul and John the Baptist The Apostle Paul, of Tarsus, wasn't always known by this name. Paul's name, before his conversion, was Saul. Saul was born in "Tarsus, which is the capital of Cilicia, a Roman province in the southeast of Asia Minor." Saul was a natural born Roman citizen, which was considered to be a privilege during those times. In his youth he picked up a trade as a tent builder. Eventually, he went off to school to further his education, studying Law at a great university. (Schnelle, U. 2005.) As Saul began to study the Law he grew fascinated with it and became a Pharisee. Pharisees believed that the Law should be followed to the letter. This group believed in God, but they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. So, they set out to kill anybody who preached the opposite. Saul was zealous about the Law. He approved and witnessed to the murder, stoning, of Stephen, who preached the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Schnelle, U. 2005) After that Saul receives written permission from the High Priest to search in Damascus' synagogues for those...

...was baptized to erase my original sin and I was welcomed into the Christian World. I was raised by my parents with the reminder that I should love God and be thankful for him. They taught me to obey and respect other people. They taught me to be a good person. As I was growing older, I began to commit sins like disobeying my parents, saying and doing bad things to other people. I also started not to attend Sunday Mass and at that point I’m beginning to feel awful as a person. I feel bad for the things I’ve done. Thus, I remembered what my teacher said when I was in elementary, “Confess and repent.” I admit that I’m going in the wrong direction and I’m willing to face my sins and the consequences for it. So as one of the message of John the Baptist, I’m ready for repentance. I want to go back to God who I am ultimately belong. I will change to be a better person and I will avoid doing the things that I’ve done before. I will obey my parents again. I will say sorry to the people I’ve hurt. And lastly, I want to attend Sunday Mass and “isabuhay” the teachings of the Church. I want to confess everything I’ve done and I want to ask for forgiveness. Museum Visit

...The analysis of two outstanding artworks: The Divine Shepherdess and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an Angel The art works in the art center provides a broad range of artistic visions from different period of times as well as various cultural backgrounds. Among them I choose two religious painting as my favorite: The Divine Shepherdess, from 1780-1800, which is an oil painting on canvas; and Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini’s Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an Angel, from 1518-1520. The latter one is also an oil artwork, but on panel, not on canvas. According to the annotate of The Divine Shepherdess, the theme source comes from the words of Saint Antoine, who said: “Mary is the Good Shepherd who pastures the church with the blessed fruit of her womb.” In The Divine Shepherdess, Mary has been portrait as a young woman with care and love, providing protection and shelter to the lambs. Sitting on a rock under a tree, Mary wears a tunic with delicate gild flower patterns embroidered on it. On her shoulder hangs a dark blue mantle, which embroidered with identical gild flower pattern as her tunic and trimmed with lace. On the shepherdess’s dark wavy hair she wears a golden lace timed hat with red feather on the top. Two angles, one on the top corner at each side, hold a crown and are about to put it on Mary’s head. The red and white ribbons around the angles symbolize Mary and the lambs. Near Mary’s right hand was a shepherd’s crook...

Cultural Arts

...I decided to do a virtual tour using the National Gallery which is located in London, England (http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/visiting/virtualtour/#/room-57/). I included my 10 year old son on this tour just to expose him to different forms of art. I like to tour various museums but I have very rarely thought about what the pieces may have meant. I was excited about this assignment mostly because of having the Humanities class and discussing how world events and thoughts were expressed through art. As I toured the museum, it was refreshing to be able to point out the different time periods and explain what the artist may have been trying to convey. The first Art Exhibit I enjoyed is called “The Baptism of Christ,” painted by Piero Della Francesca during the 1450’s. Francesca was an Italian painter born in 1416 or 1418. He was considered to be a major part of the early Italian Renaissance Period. The Early Renaissance is the period from about 1400 to 1500 in Italian, painting, sculpture, and architecture. It allowed the advancement of critical thought process and cultural expression through art. “The Baptism of Christ” was thought to be the central panel for an altarpiece for the Pieve of Sansepolcro. Francesca’s technique included an exaggeration of figures, an eye for spatial definition, and an advanced blend of color and light. What I liked about this piece was the very vibrant use of color and light. Even though I was not in front of the piece, the use of color and light...
