Johnathan Boucher was an episcopal minister who preached in Virginia between 1759 and 1775. Jonathan, a loyalist, returned home to England in 1775 because of threats on his life from the American rebels. In 1797 he published some of his sermons from his time in Virginia that were in support of Britain maintaining control over their colony. Being a minister Johnathan used god in his argument against the rebellion saying, " Obedience to government is every man's duty, because it is every man's interest; but it is particularly incumbent on Christians, because (in addition to its moral fitness) it is enjoined by the positive commands of God; and, therefore, when Christians are disobedient to human ordinances, they are also disobedient to God." …show more content…
He published the work Common Sense in 1776. When writing this book he made sure to keep all compliments and censures to the individual out of his work in order to keep a factual document. Throughout his work Thomas Paine made simple connections between religion, nature, and logic. He was able to prove there is no logic in the fact that man are born equal under god but a select few are the only ones allowed to rule. He was also able to compare Britain and the American relationship to a mother and child stating that a mother would never attack its kin but would help protect it. Meanwhile Britain has been oppressing the American colonies for years with the stamp act, intolerable acts, and currency act, to name a few. If Britain wasn't Americas mother who was? Thomas Paine said, "Europe and not england, is the parent country of America. This new world hath been the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every part of Europe." (99) Paine meant that even though Britain is a part in helping start this country so many different religious and ethnicities have moved into the Americas over the past years from Europe there was no way only Britain was the parent country of
