...The Journey South and Inwards In many stories characters may take a journey south, either literally or figuratively, this journey may be a mental journey through knowledge or a physical journey through an unknown world, so that they can have a better understanding of the connections between their past, their lost traditions and the values they have lost with the lack of encouragement for their own forgotten culture and heritage. The journey “south or inwards” serves as a method for the characters to find their own background, their foundations so that they can acknowledge who they are, what they are and to live with it. In the book Latino Boom, the story “La Promesa” by Guy Garcia is an example of such journey. In the story we meet Tom Cardona, an Americanized Hispanic, who is in the middle of his scavenger hunt, looking for his dead grandmother’s nanny, Blanca Morell. His grandmother requested him to find the nanny, on his journey Tom finds out that his real grandmother is no other than Blanca Morell and that his “grandmother” was in reality the nanny of Blanca. Tom finds out the story of his grandmother, how horribly she lived, and how cruelly she died. In the story it’s said, “Tom felt his blood congeal. The curdled face… was the very same that had pressed against his car window at the airport parking lot”(87). His real grandmother wanted to be acknowledged, she didn’t want to let go until one of her lineage or descendent were to know their history and to not forget who...

...Uzair Sumra Robert Guffey English 100 30 November 2015 What Is The American Dreams? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a book written by Hunter S. Thompson published in the year 1971. The book is a reflection of American politics during Thompson’s time. It is written with the author (Thompson) as the main character, but he uses a fictional name to avoid repercussions and allow for more artistic license. The book takes place in the early 1970s and the main character, Raoul Duke, is sent to Las Vegas to write an article on the 4th annual “Mint Race 400” buggy race. Under the advice of his lawyer (Dr. Gonzo) both drive out to Las Vegas on a nonstop LSD and mescaline trip. Unfortunately, Duke and Gonzo engage themselves in an adventure of the lifetime. Somehow things go berserk and both of them end up abandoning work and engaging in an experience that involves disparaging everyone around them. The obvious theme of the book is The American Dream. Thompson wrote a lot about the American Dream and just like most people, he believed in the American Dream. Hunter S. Thompson portrays the American Dream as illusionary, as there are some places where he says that the American Dream is about money. The American Dream is a phrase which is heard, at some point, by most people today and the meaning has been understood since the founding of America. The definition of the American Dream appears to be different for most people, depending on their views. Probably the most accepted explanation...

...In chapter 2 of Enrique’s Journey we begin the journey with Enrique to the United States in search of his mother. We are shown the trials and tribulations that Enrique is faced with through out his journey. While reading this book I came across a few significant issues that opened my eyes: the number of times Enrique has to restart his journey, the cruelty he had to endure, and Maria Isabel’s decision to search for Enrique. We learn at the beginning of the chapter that Enrique has to ultimately restart his journey to America multiple times. Each time he sets out through Mexico he is caught by the la migra. This is devastating to me and I could not imagine the determination Enrique mentally and physically has. I have a feeling that each time he sets out and he get caught he is more and more discouraged, and each time it takes more for him to start again. He is definitely having to fight the urge to quit, and return home to Honduras. Usually when Enrique was caught and sent back to the Guatemala boarder is was never in a calm way. The la migra was always harsh and attacked Enrique. Many time the only thing they did would be stealing his money but other times they would beat him. The most resent time we learned about while reading was probably the worst of all....

...In this movie, we see the boxer La Motta cause so much pain and suffering for the ones he loves. An example of this includes La Motta getting physical with his wife as well as his brother Joey. The viewer can see the path of redemption begins when La Motta loses everything the ones that he loves, his wealth, and is arrested. In that scene, I believe his path to redemption begins when he violently starts banging his heads against a wall trying to inflict the pain he causes on others on himself, or how he seeks forgiveness from his brother. However, the path of redemption is not always complete. The hero can start his path for redemptions and be successful like in the movie Field of Dreams but in the case of Raging Bull he starts the path but does not really complete it. For example towards the end of the movie we see his monologue where La Motta accuses himself but is not a redemption but just acceptance of all the pain and destruction that he has caused. Additionally, when he seeks forgiveness from his brother it is not a true redemption because we see in a few minutes he still plays his brother for not being there and how he stopped him from becoming a...

...Jules Verne: Five Weeks in a Balloon 1863’s Five Weeks in a Balloon, the first of Jules Verne’s famous Voyages Extraordinaires, follows the adventures of three explorers as they attempt to be the first men to traverse Africa from the east to the west utilising a hydrogen filled balloon to make the journey in a far shorter time than normal. The beginning of the book details the plans of the trips architect, Dr Ferguson, and contains what is essentially a justification of the idea including details of how the balloon would work, including the mathematics for its much vaunted ‘ascensional force’, and it is from this first section that true scientific fiction draws its origin. The book also functions in part as a history of the exploration of Africa. Verne gives detailed descriptions of the extent of the various expeditions into Africa, including who they were made by, where they reached, and various ways in which the explorers died, usually in an unpleasant manner at the hands of either angry natives or nasty diseases. These tales serve to place the story in history in a believable fashion, and also to remind the reader that the outcome of the journey is far from certain, lending the tribulations the adventurers undergo an air of genuine danger. The characters in the balloon are all different enough to give a sense of reality and engagement to the novel and make it stand apart from a merely didatic text with a plot thrown in. The Doctor is initially annoying and preachy. Kennedy...

...English 102-26 Community Analysis Essay RD The Myth of Single Mothers We propose changes, transformations, evolutions and revolutions and yet neglect to realize our own mistakes, where we should start and therefore find the proper ways to make these changes come true. In today’s world there are a large number of women who have decided to take on motherhood without the support of their partner either because they have taken that decision for themselves or they had no other option. Whatever the case is, now when we see single mothers taking care of their children, we should see them as women worthy of admiration and not make them feel as they have failed or like they should feel ashamed of their situation. Furthermore, the journey of raising a child alone is synonymous of courage, sacrifice, love, and lots of effort when there is not parental or child support from the father of the child. However, and without actually replacing the father figure of the child, the family of the single woman is for her and her child a unique and fundamental support for both (mother / child) that will make them feel somehow protected and in turn help the child to feel that he belongs and is a member of a family unit . First of all, when I referred to the life of single mothers as a myth what I mean is those ideas that we do ourselves or society makes it soak into our minds in the form of mainly negative thoughts created by those who wrongly criticize women's decision to accept...

...might seem as though he was viewed as someone who helped benefit the world (a hero), Christopher Columbus can also be classified as a terrorist due to the way he treated the natives he found on his journey and how he took control of their natural resources. Christopher Columbus, the son of a poor wool merchant, was born in 1451 in Genoa (Italy). Columbus had worked for his father in his early years until he was a teenager. He had gotten a job on a merchant ship that traded their goods at various ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Between his voyages he studied both cartography (mapmaking) and geography. In the 1470’s, Columbus had travelled and live in Portugal. This was the greatest European seafaring center of the age, which meant that it was the center for explorers. During his stay in Portugal he studied mathematics, astronomy and navigation. Together with all his mastered skills he began to come up with a plan that would change the world forever. During the 15th century, it was nearly impossible to reach Asia by land. This route was not only very long but also dangerous. The Portuguese explorers solved this problem by traveling by sea. These travelers would get into little caravels and travel south along the West African coast. This had made the journey a little...

...The Shining Mountain Pangma-La is a young girl who is named after ‘The shining mountain’. Her father is a famous mountaineer. Others tease Pangma-La since her name is very unusual for a Scottish girl. In the beginning of the story she starts crying, but her father scolds her for doing so. Her father is very ambitious on Pangma-La’s behalf. She is named after ‘The Shining Mountain’ so she can stand tall and be proud. Pangma-La is very focused in getting her fathers recognition, and she is willing to sacrifice anything to please him. On their journey to the mountain, Pangma-La does everything she can to live up to her fathers high expectations, but as the task gets tougher she allow the old Sherpa woman to carry her bag, her heavy clothes and later her heart, lungs and bones, instead of telling her father that she is having a very hard time to keep up with him. Pangma-La is very submissive; she does everything her father asks of her without objecting. All her actions are based on how they will affect her father’s thoughts about her. She would rather give up her own heart and turn into a swan, than to let her father down. I seems like her father doesn’t see his daughter as an individual, but instead sees her like a part of him. He basically assume that she want to achieve the same goals as him. And he expects that she will achieve the goals that he has set for her. He doesn’t ask Pangma-La if she wants to climb The Shining Mountain. He just presumes that she wants to, without...

...fact this movie, a movie about the happenings of the trial after a slave mutiny aboard a Spanish transatlantic slave ship, contains a protagonist that was neither aboard the ship, nor is he black. The other protagonist in the movie was a slave on the ship, and a good portion of the movie depicted his plight both during the mutiny and during the trial that made the audience want to be on his side throughout the film. There is no clear cut antagonist in this film. Is it the nation of Spain who wants its “property” back? Could it be the two Spaniards that were the only surviving “victims” of the mutiny? Or better yet could it be the finders of the ship La Amistad? No, in fact the antagonist is actually an establishment. The first thirty minutes or so of Amistad starts out with the mutiny that takes place aboard the ship La Amistad. This dramatic scene shows vivid detail in attempt to bring the audience into the realm of the ship. Here the audience is introduced to Cinque, the leader of his tribe, who in the opening moments of the film uses his bloody hands to meticulously pick the lock to his shackles during a mid-ocean storm. It starts with the sweaty face of an obviously African man working on something difficult. As the screen pans out, the audience can then see him picking the wood around a spike that is locking his shackles into the timber. It is thundering what seems to be right overhead, and every time it lightnings, the audience sees his face more vividly. After...
