LEVEL 1 LESSON 17
In the previous lesson, we looked at the basic way of conjugating the verbs in the dictionary form into the

present tense form. Do you remember how?

ㅗ [o] or ㅏ [a] are followed by 아요 [a-yo]. Verb stems ending with vowels OTHER THAN ㅗ or ㅏ are followed by 어요 [eo-yo]. Verb stem 하 is followed by 여요 [yeo-yo].
Verb stems ending with vowels Now it’s time to learn how to change verbs into the

past tense.

If you understand how to change verbs into the present tense, understanding how to change them into the past tense is just as easy. A similar rule is applied to making past tense sentences, and the endings are:

았어요 [a-sseo-yo] 었어요 [eo-sseo-yo] 였어요 [yeo-sseo-yo]
You can add those to the verb stems, or you can think of it as just replacing the “요” at the end of present tense sentences with -ㅆ어요 [ss-eo-yo].

ㅗ [o] or ㅏ [a] are followed by 았어요 [a-sseo-yo]. Verb stems ending with vowels other than ㅗ or ㅏ are followed by 었어요 [eo-sseo-yo]. Verb stem 하 is followed by 였어요 [yeo-sse-yo].
Verb stems ending with vowels Let’s take a look at some examples.

North Korea Research Paper

...From the end of the Korean war North Korea has been a thorn in the side of America’s Foreign affairs. North Korea is one of the few countries in the global community that openly displays very strong Anti-american rhetoric. Now with the capabilities of possessing a nuclear missile that can strike the Continental United States it has become quite apparent that North Korea is major threat. I believe there is a way to help solve this “North Korea” problem that will both stabilize the korean peninsula and maintain the power balance in the asia-pacific region. The whole “North Korea” problem started back in 1945 when after the unconditional surrender of Japan. The Soviet Union and the United States occupied the north and south of korea divided at the 38th parallel respectively. In 1948 after failed unification talks, two new governments were formed. South Korea having a Federal Presidential Republic (Democracy) and North Korea having an Unitary one-party Juche state (Communist). At this point the tension between the two koreas grew to the point of war. On June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea sparking what would be a war lasting more than three years. During this time period the Americans and the UN were the allies of South Korea and the Soviet and China were allies of North Korea. After three...

North Korea Foreign Policy Essay

...in North Korea – Another Country, “The Author of most of its own troubles”. The country is close to entirely isolated from the rest of the world maintaining only small contact with certain nations. Since the ceasefire of the Korean War, North Korea has become increasingly detached from the majority of the world; however what factors have led to this increased isolation? The heavy bombing of the North during the war, the continued existence of missiles aimed at the North, the fall of the Soviet Union, the Carter and Clinton governments steps on reconciliation with North Korea and the Bush Governments seemingly polaric policy re-opening tension with the nation, have all played a role in North Korea’s isolation but to what extent? The Korean War was, as the Cold War of the same era, an ideological clash between the two main systems, Communism and Democracy. The North, as a communist country, was an enemy of the United States in this Ideological Clash however the Korean War was, as stated by Bruce Cummings in his 2004 novel, North Korea – Another Country, “A War fought by Koreans for Korean goals”. Bruce Cummings is the most prominent western historian to write about North Korea and several of his books are on required reading lists for subjects at the Korean University in Seoul. Cummings presents a sympathetic view to North Korea’s scenario as a “hermit kingdom” and with a large exposure to the country and despite his obvious bias towards the left, his works are extensively researched...

South Korea and the Internet

...connect every home in the country to the Internet at one gigabit per second. That would be a tenfold increase from the already blazing national standard and more than 200 times as fast as the average household setup in the United States. The US, on the other hand, has a "closed network" system—it doesn't require ISPs to share their pipes, making it harder for other companies to enter the market. South Korea's network is more open, allowing for more competition, which drives speeds up and prices down. The country also has a super dense population, with some 1,200 people per square mile. Today, more than 80 percent of South Koreans are wired, and Seoul's been called the "bandwidth capital of the world." When we talk about Korea, we must first understand how the country began and the particulars of its culture. The family is the most important part of Korean life. In Confucian tradition, the father is the head of the family and it is his responsibility to provide food, clothing and shelter, and to approve of all of the marriages that occur within the family unit. The eldest son has special duties: his first duty is to his parents, followed by duty to his brothers, from older to younger, then to his sons, then to his wife, and lastly to his daughters. Family welfare is much more important than the needs of the individual. Members of the family are tied to each other because the actions of one family member reflect on the rest of the family. In many cases the family register can...

However, its relationship with North Korea continues to present a strong challenge. South Korea fell into a brief financial crisis in 1997 due to structural weakness in the banking sector, however strong economic and financial reforms quickly countered the downturn and put the country back on a growth path by the following year. With the opening up of markets after the financial crisis in 1997, the country became one of the largest technology markets in the world. As far as social issues are concerned, the country has low population growth and fertility rates, leading to an ageing population. Furthermore, the country has a highly qualified labor force, which makes it possible to both produce and commercialize advanced technologies. The country is also well equipped with extensive broadband network and telecommunication facilities. Legal procedures in the country are time consuming and complex, which makes it very difficult for foreign investors. Facing Poverty with Rich Girl's Habits

...The essay I chose to summarize is Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits by Suki Kim. Suki Kim describes how life was different when she moved from Korea to America. She also pointed out how the differently American culture was from her own. Such as when she was in school in Korea they bowed at the teacher every chance they got, but not in America. Based on her Korean culture she felt that it was disrespectful the way America ran their schools with no respect for the teacher. Suki describes how when she was in ESOL, and sadly none of the fellow Korean students had anything in common with her. It did not take long for Suki to discover that most of the Koreans that lived in New York with a decent amount of wealth lived in West Chester or Manhattan. Obviously she didn’t get along with the lower class Koreans because that was not how she grew up in her country. I believe the purpose of this paper was to make other cultures aware of how things are different in every country. Also I believe this was healing and closure for the pain she felt from being rich, then unexpectedly poor and moving to a new country. The audience behind this story was the general public I felt because she wanted to make others aware of how quick life can change. We live in a country where we are used to things being a certain way, but this story can teach so many life lessons. Businesses can be successful and producing great revenue, but tomorrow can go bankrupt we have seen this in with our economy...
