Annotation
Kotter contends that leadership and management skills are essential. The author points out when any one of these skills is neglected or performed improperly the organization can suffer. Kotter asserts that most American corporations are over-managed and poorly led. He argues that management tries to establish security and order, whereas leadership has the goal of promoting change and fluidity within organizations. As Kotter saw it in Management and Leadership Behavior, during planning and budgeting manager establishes agendas, sets timetables and allocates resources. Manager focuses on control and the solving of issues by taking actions …show more content…
They both have a crucial impact across the organizational culture and performance and can benefit both employees’ job satisfaction and commitment. In my workplace management and leadership is about vision, motivation, people, change, breaking down barriers and building aligned relationships. I stopped looking at leadership and management as two separate lists of behaviours and activities, but rather combine the two to better manage my team and lead every project I am involved …show more content…
However with the traits discussed; Situational; I must discern what works best for the team and influencing them to change direction by promoting a better way. Transactional; control the project during the implementation stage and Transformational; communicating the objectives and aspire my team to perform at their best. As a participative leader I need to discuss, take ideas, look for ways to help people come on board, and celebrate every success that comes along with the team, all these traits are needed in enabling the team to succeed and influence successful project outcomes. Clearly, both types of skills (Management & Leadership) are essential for businesses to be able to succeed. Without vision, an organization cannot see where it is supposed to go. Without change, the same organization will not be able to determine how to reach its vision. Having both management and leadership mindset can affect how we move forward as a cohesive team at work and community. Effective management, leadership can create a positive and carefree perspective about work. Understanding the dynamic of both management and leadership skills and learn to balance the two is an important component of my role as a project manager. From our early morning routines including eating in the mess hall to saluting the American flag at morning colors, sailors, like many other individuals in the Armed Forces, are groomed for commitment to the military mission at all times. But, is there a need for change in the military? I enlisted in the United States Navy in 2002 out of Fort Dix, NJ, and was eager to learn the ways and policies of the Armed Forces. I was very obedient throughout boot camp, as in the civilian world, and had no problem with authority and delegation from others. That’s how I knew that the military was the right decision for me after high school. As time went on and I advanced in rank, a newer generation of sailors embarked toward their naval journey, and in about 2007 I noticed a peculiar difference in the way obedience and authority was handled. Newer recruits were becoming more carefree and seemed to ignore the orders of hierarchies and senior subordinates. What has influenced this change?
