...Field Study Journal #5 The last week of my internship has been a very busy and at times stressful week. Two of the current interns are leaving the company, including myself, and two new interns are joining the company. Most people might envision their last week at a job as being very laid back and relaxing with not much work being done. My last week has been a very hectic and busy week compared to what most people imagine. One of the new interns began working less than two weeks ago and I find myself spending a significant amount of time helping him settle in. I have several responsibilities in helping him prepare for our busy season which is less than two months away. Everyone who works within the Risk Advisory Services department must learn to input his or her time into both programs that we use. The first program is called ‘Kronos’ which is simply used to log how many hours an individual worked in a given week. The purpose of the second program that we use is to allocate the amount of time worked on each project. By tracking everyone’s hours per project, management can use this information to assist them in planning the audits in the following year. Another important piece of information that I was able to share with the new intern was related to communication with all of the different business process owners. Most of the requests that must be made for testing support are made by interns. I spent nearly thirty minutes with the new intern showing him how to properly send a...

...Step One: The interval – ratio variable is (hrs1), or “how many hours did you work last week”. 1 – 89. Actual hours -1. NAP, 98. DK, 99. NA The ordinal variable is (class), or “subjective class identification”. 1. Lower class 2. Working class 3. Middle class 4. Upper class 0. NAP, 8. DK, 9. NA Step Two: The independent variable is the number of hours worked last week and the dependent variable is “subjective class identification”. A job that would require me to research the number of hours one has worked in a week and the subjective social class that one “belongs to” is an organization that focuses on economic inequality in America. The prospective job would entail knowledge of past and present trends, fluxation in the job market, and analysis of future trends. For instance, my employer may want me to research whether the middle class is shrinking into the “new” working class or if it is becoming absolute. As a professional sociologist I would be inclined to work with the understanding of specific theories like structural functionalism, symbolic interactionsim, and conflict theory, to name a few. Using conflict theory as an impetus I could look at the distribution of labor and the resulting wages earned to determine if the prevailing theory of “working hard” does indeed lead to social mobility. Can the “American Dream” truly be attained through diligence, hard work, and virtue? If so then the notion that people who are in the lower class work less than those in the...

...I am writing this memo to address the unfortunate incident that occurred last week. As I am sure you all are aware of, one of our surgeons severely injured a patient on the operating table last week as the result of sleep deprivation. This not only put the patient’s life in danger, but our reputation as a hospital as well. It has come to my attention that a large majority of our physicians and surgeons are working long hours into the night and are not getting sufficient enough rest. As medical professionals, you should know more than anyone of the effects of sleep deprivation on the mind and performance. In response, this hospital will be implementing and enforcing new work hour regulations in order to preserve the wellbeing of our staff and...

...University of Phoenix Material Week 4 Mentorship Meeting Worksheet Please complete this sheet with your mentor and submit it to your instructor. Date of Meeting: 2 / 9 / 2015 Meeting Duration: 1hr 1. Meeting notes – what was discussed during your meeting? Today we discussed issues that I was having at work which was affecting my job satisfaction. I was in a situation at work that was causing me pain. I just recently started a new job and my job satisfaction was going good until the past few days. I was told I would be working specific hours of the day and during the week, but then this week all that had changed, now I am working several hours a week longer than I agreed to and working extra days, it makes me feel that I was hired under false pretenses just so the company could fill the position. Another issue that came up was my pay, I was told that I would be paid on a specific day and when that day came I was told that a mistake had been made and that I would be paid the following Monday then when that day came another problem arose and I have still not been paid. 2. What issues have you encountered since the last meeting and how did you address them? Several issues have come up at work since our last meeting. I am working with my mentor to establish a positive way of approaching my manager about my issues and how to deal with his response to my situation. 3. ...Week 11 & Week 12 The last two weeks are the busiest weeks to me because since my internship program is near the end, I need to complete all the tasks before leaving. During this period, my main task is to prepare an intern farewell event during the last time to chairman, CEO, Director and all the senior general managers of my company. It is also a ceremony to send off us. Besides, I am given a task to write a report of learning experience within the internship program to my company’s supervisor, finding the information of competitor’s make-up classe, explore myself in working process of warehouse working, attend GST workshop and take part in DWMY Friends & Family Day. Interns Farewell Event Our company hopes that there is a session for all of us to enjoy before ending the internship program, so that we are informed to organize interns’ farewell event with all the other interns from different department during the last day. Therefore, it is the only opportunity for me to work with all interns during my internship program. Due to the limited time of preparation, all of us keep discussing to come out the idea in doing it well. We prepare the decoration, invitation card, performance, video together. It is a task that needs the cooperation of each of us to complete. From the process of preparation, I learn how to dealing some matter with the superior, how to communicate with people and how to work in a team. ... Months one, two, and three are the first trimester and include weeks one through twelve of a pregnancy. During week one of pregnancy, the egg and sperm join to make a cell called a zygote. The zygote divides multiple times and the bunch of cells move towards the uterus. Then during the second week the dividing zygote, now called a blastocyst, goes into the uterus and burrows into the side of it. During week three, part of the blastocyst will develop into the placenta that will help provide the baby with nutrients. It will also produce a hormone called HCG that will stop the woman’s menstrual period and make the body produce increased levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones that will begin growth of the placenta. The fully formed placenta will be the life support system for the baby (Dattel 13). In week four, the heart and lungs of the baby will begin developing, and the baby will have a heartbeat (14). By week five the baby is approximately 0.5 inches long, and the arms and legs will appear as short stumps. At the time of week six the baby’s heart is beating eighty times per minute. The nose, mouth, and ears are also beginning to form. During week seven, the bones start forming but are not hard. Fingers and toes are present and genitals start to develop. Eyelids also form but stay closed. By week eight, all major organs and body systems have started developing and brain cells begin connecting (15). In week nine,...

...Being the Man or Working for Him Be the Man or Work for Him I’ve been on both sides of the track. I can tell you that there are days that I miss owning my own business and there are days that I can’t believe that I would ever consider doing it again. There are many plusses to working for someone else; however, there are many benefits of being self-employed and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them both. For the last six-plus years, I have been fortunate enough to work for one of the finest employers in my area. Fifteen years prior to that I took pride in owning several of the finest businesses in my area. We all need to make a living that makes us happy. Job satisfaction directly affects our entire lives in many ways. Based on a 40 hour work week, we spend almost twenty-four percent of our lives each week at what we do for a living. The National Sleep Foundation provides statistics that says that an average American sleep 6.7 hours per night. Taking this statistic and placing it in the equation and the percentage rises to a full 33%! One-third of our waking hours per week are dedicated to work. For many, working for the man suits them just fine. As well, many choose to pave their own road for a career. No matter what we do there is a sense of satisfaction that we all must experience in our careers. Having experienced both, I can say that there are inherent differences that divide the choice of, “Being THE MAN” versus “Working for THE MAN”. The following is a comparison...

...A significant action of mine was when I was leading my VEX competition robot team and decided to scratch the build at the last minute. It seemed like a terrible idea, but we had no choice because we knew our robot was not ready for the competition and would fail to perform for sure. In one of the classes I took in high school, one of our yearlong projects was to build a robot and participate I in a local VEX robotics competition. In the competition, our built robot would compete against another in an arena that involved rubber balls. The goal was to get as many rubber balls on the other side as possible in a certain time. From the beginning, our team had many issues including malfunctioning parts, computer glitches, and part shortages. These unexpected and even frustrating inconveniences caused an innumerable amount of delays. Regardless, a week before the competition, we had a somewhat functional robot that was ready to be tested. However, when we finally held our breaths and began testing it, it failed miserably. The arm was too heavy for the motors, our wheels were too small, and the robot was too heavy. With only a week left before the competition, we felt that we were doomed to be the only team from our school who would embarrass ourselves at the competition....
