Communication Development Plan
Introduction
The fundamental foundation in the Leadership Communication textbook is that “effective leadership depends on effective communication” (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). Without effective communication, leaders accomplish little (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). The lack of communication from a leader, makes him or her not a leader (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). Mastering communication for leadership allows for leaders to move into leadership positions and lead a group to a common goal (Barrett, 2014, p. 5). Effective leadership communication requires the leader to anticipate, transmit, appreciate, understand, and craft messages to reach the wanted recipient as intended (Barrett, 2014, p. 7).
Current Assessment
Leadership Communication Ethos/Image Based off of the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, my leadership communication regarding ethos and image are acceptable, but could be worked on as I scored a 3.5/5.0 (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This result showed me that my strengths were in relation to my understanding of how people viewed me and my willingness to improve. I am aware of myself enough to see how me leadership style is and how it affects others. But my weaknesses could hinder this, as I do not like to ask for opinions of my style and I lack confidence (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities).
Audience Analysis and Strategy
My Audience Analysis and Strategy was one of my lowest scores, scoring a 3.0/5.0 (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This score shows that I need work on these capabilities and that it can affect my communication, especially with individuals I am not as close to. Analyzing and reading an audience while assessing the situation, are all cases I will need to improve on in order for good outcomes when communicating as a leader to diverse audiences (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities).
Social Media & Written Communication Results regarding social media and written communication from the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, are very good abilities, as I scored a 3.71/5.0. This was not a surprise to me as my generation is very comfortable with social media and written communication. They are especially comfortable in this if they have a generous amount of education in their background and use it daily. My formatting and organization of these types of communication, I feel are ranked high and are strengths of mine (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). Practice from previous and current education and the professional world back this up.
Oral Communication
Oral Communication is another capability I feel I am strong in considering my lack of experience in it. As I have constantly talked to small and large groups of people on a daily basis for the last couple of years, it was assessed that this experienced allowed me to score high, with a 3.54/5.0 result (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). I still feel the need to improve, especially in my impromptu presentation skills, because if I feel uncomfortable because of a lack of preparedness, my presentation skills can easily lack.
Visual Communication
An assessment result I felt was mission critical for me was the internal communication capability (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This was the lowest score for me and I feel like it is so because of a lack of experience. To improve my visual communication, I need to act as if my current educational demonstrations are actually for an employer or a business presentation, which may allow me to gain feedback and to know what I can improve upon.
Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence when dealing with others and with my own feelings, could both use some improvement as measured by the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities as well as the Emotional Intelligence Assessment. Understanding and controlling my feelings, as well as expressing these feelings to others can allow for an openness in communication and potential barriers when it comes to communication leadership. Understanding others and how they react to specific forms of communication is also key when a leader wants a follower to obey and understand them.
Diversity and Intercultural Communication It surprised me that I felt somewhat confident in this area, but I do feel as that I can become more versed in these cultures and with the people who make up diversity in my office. I scored a 3.5/5.0 on this capability of the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities. Understanding is different than appreciating diverse individuals and what they bring to the office. This is something I need to work on, as well as the organization I currently work for. Diversity is growing in my office and within my employer, so a better understanding and appreciation will be important moving forward for me as well as my office.
Organizational Communication Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities measured my organizational communication capability a 3.65/5.0, rating it at acceptable, but could still use some improvement and I agree. I consider this assessment a strength of mine, but I do understand the impact that improvement of this capability can make on my leadership communication abilities. Being able to be recognized by peers for good leadership communication skills is a goal of mine.
Internal Communication & Transformational Leadership
An area that I need to work on and develop quickly is internal communication, based on the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, as I scored a 2.8/5.0. I tend to assume at times and this can cause conflict. I also have a hard time approaching individuals I may not know as well or have a close work relationship with. This is mainly toward superiors as their “power” affects my confidence, especially now since my new superior and I are not known to each other well as it is a busy time in the office.
External Corporate Communication The Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities scored me as a 3.5/5.0 on the external communication ability. Strengths with this include, communicating with the external partners as well as media third parties that support my organization. It is also safe to say that experience can help with improvements, as in my current position I do not deal with external partners too often.
Group and Team Dynamics
Out of the two factors that I scored low on within the DiSC Assessment, I feel as if the most important one to grow in is Influence. This is because in order to lead and lead effectively, I must have more of an influence on my peers, co-workers, and subordinates. I must have this in order to be more social and get to know these individuals within my office so I can help them and lead them to the best of my abilities.
I understand that I am more reserved than others, but I feel as if I have already grown tremendously in this area of becoming more social, being able to public speak, and reaching out first as peers I have worked with have noted a positive growth with my influence factor. This assessment has shown me though that I need to continue to improve on this as influence is power and power will help me get to where I want to be as a leader in the near future.
Communication Improvement Goals I have chosen three areas in which I plan to improve my communication competencies: audience analysis and strategy, oral communication, and internal communication. My goals for improving these areas are as follows: 1. I will improve my audience analysis skills, which includes, reading the audience and understanding the correct communication response in the next year.

Actions to Achieve Goals I will continue to improve my analyzation of audiences by finding a mentor within my office to give examples and explanations of specific occurrences that he or she has had to deal with and overcome over their professional career. I will also continue to ask many questions before answering in tense situations or unknown situations, in order for me to give the correct response. I will also start to listen more instead of listening to respond, as that can make me really miss what the person is actually saying. I will improve my oral communication by continuing to give public presentations for my current position, as well as to my peers. Having my peers see my presentations will allow for feedback in areas to improve, as well as answering questionnaires I give to them before the presentation. Again, experience in practice is one way that I improve amongst many things. Also giving the audience feedback questionnaires will allow for even more useful feedback. To improve upon my internal communication, stepping out of my comfort zone is needed. Joining more committees and professional development groups, as well as leading team projects and volunteering will allow me to grow professionally in this area. Making connections within my organization can help in the long run and allow for a better communication setting within my office.
Measurement
In order to measure whether or not I achieved my SMART goals listed above, in the time frame stated, peers will be needed. For all my mentioned improvement capabilities, I will need peers to evaluate me during each given scenario. For my oral communication improvement, I will need them to evaluate me giving a presentation to a large audience off campus. I will provide an evaluation checklist to use during the evaluation, so that I may see where I measure in the areas is specifically wanted to improve at. I will also use a survey at the end of my presentation to give to my audience so that I may also see their reactions to my presentation. The measurement of improvement of my analyzation skills of an audience, I feel, is very difficult to measure. I will most likely have a superior of mine monitor my progress my observing me in my current work environment as much as possible, and during my yearly review, touch on how I have made improvements and where I need to continue improving at. To improve my internal communication skills, I plan to pair with a co-worker and do many of the activities listed above together to keep me accountable. With my partner, I will also have them act like the above superior would for my measurement of my analyzation skills, and observe me throughout the timeframe and provide feedback at the end.
Conclusion
By specifically improving the three communication areas mentioned above, I will be able to become a more successful leader as I will be gaining experience, confidence, and mentors to continue to guide and mentor me along the way through my leadership journey.
