“Leading The New Plan” 1. What went wrong for Alejandro? What mistakes did he make?
A few things went wrong for Alejandro. Firstly, the team members he addressed in the meeting did not view him as the true leader. The case mentioned that soon the “old-hand team members began to come up with a different plan and new set of deadline.” Alejandro’s plans and deadlines were disregarded and no one was paying attention. Alejandro made a few mistakes along the way. For example, he failed to get the department heads involved in his plan, by doing so, he failed to motivate the team members.

2. Did Dan make a mistake in putting Alejandro in charge?
Dan did not make a mistake in putting Alejandro in charge; however, Dan made a mistake in falling to explain to other members in management his thinking behind his pick. In addition, Dan should have further involved the “old-hand” team members and have gotten more feedback from them to make the transition easier.

3. What should have been done to make the plan work? What should Alejandro have done differently? What should Dan have done differently?
Dan and Alejandro should have worked more as a team. Dan should have aided Alejandro become an effective leader. Alejandro should have involved the more senior members or heads of the department in order to fulfill his plan more successfully. Had this be done the implementation stage could been smoother. Dan should have participated in the meeting. By leaving he undermined Alejandro’s position and did not give the project or the project manager the importance they deserved. Other team members viewed this as just another idea and did not view Alejandro as an effective and authentic leader.

4. What does an “authentic leader” do?
