I have had the pleasure to work with Brenda Burgin for 8 years in the Emergency Room at Shands Starke Regional Medical Center. She is employed as a clerk on the nightshift. As a Charge Nurse I am very reliant on her to help me keep things running smoothly during our 12 hour shift.
The ER clerks have a multitude of responsibilities including answering all incoming phone calls, ensuring paperwork for patient admissions and transfers are complete, finding placement for Baker Act Patients, keeping an accurate log of all ER patients, ensuring incoming EMS personnel have the proper documentation for patients. More recently they have been trained to do EKG’s, finger stick glucose checks, urine pregnancy tests, transporting inpatient’s to their rooms, bringing triage patient’s to an ER bed and preparing recently vacated rooms for the next patient.
Brenda had the added responsibility of ordering supplies for the ER. She made up the ordering list including the par levels, would retrieve the order from our Central Supply then put the items away. She is also the training clerk for any new staff and has a very easy to follow instruction printout for new staff as well as the nurse’s when we are without a clerk.
Brenda’s attention to detail is an asset our department, when she is not there I realize just how much she really does for the department. Just having enough copies of necessary paperwork and office supplies, work orders put in and followed up on to mention a few.
