...Format of a Recommendation Letter Salutation If you are writing a personal letter of reference, include a salutation (Dear Mr. Marina, Dear Ms. Templeton, etc.). If you are writing a general letter, say "To Whom it May Concern" or simply don't include a salutation. Paragraph 1 The first paragraph of the reference letter template explains your connection to the person you are recommending, including how you know them, and why you are qualified to write a reference letter to recommend employment or graduate school. Paragraph 2 The second paragraph of the reference letter template contains specific information on the person you are writing about, including why they are qualified, what they can contribute, and why you are providing a reference letter. If necessary, use more than one paragraph to provide details. Paragraph 3 When writing a specific letter referring a candidate for a particular job opening, the reference letter template will include information on how the person's skills match the position they are applying for. Ask for a copy of the job posting and a copy of the person's resume so you can target your reference letter accordingly. ...activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was most remembered as an effective orator and passionate organizer of social movements. (D.L. Chandler, 2012). His letter from a Birmingham jail written in 1963 explained his ethical, emotional and logical appeal. Martin Luther King was a clergyman and a prominent leader in the civil rights movement. He was an activist and an advocate for the rights of the oppressed African American people and used nonviolent methods in his fight for equality. “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” is a truly emotionally charged, but particularly logical letter. Martin Luther King appeals to the reader in an effort to make them understand what he and the oppressed people were doing was a necessary step and that it was in love, not hate for those that oppressed them. His emotions in the letter do not come across as hateful but more as frustration in an effort to appeal to the reader. He appeals to the emotions of the reader on several occasions by talking about how the “Negros” were treated but perhaps the emotional appeal that stands out is at the end of his letter. He apologizes for the letter being long and assures the reader that it “would have been much shorter” had he been “writing from a comfortable desk”. He states, “What else can one do when alone in a narrow jail cell, other than write long letters, think long thoughts and pray long prayers?” He only had his own thoughts to listen to and his own emotions to deal with while in jail. This complete...

Useful link When you send in your CV to a manager or recruiter to apply for an advertised vacancy or to let him or her know that you are looking for work, you'll normally send a covering letter too. If you're applying for an existing vacancy, your covering letter should briefly describe the position you're applying for and where you saw it advertised, why you are particularly qualified for the job, and why you want to work for that specific company. If you're approaching an agency to register your CV as part of your search for a new job, you should describe the type of job you're looking for, the skills you have that would make you an attractive candidate, your current salary, and any preferences you may have in terms of location. In all cases, a good covering letter can give a sense of who you are that may not come across in a CV. When you come to write your letter, remember to think about its tone, how you are describing...

...1. Not looking into candidates’ backgrounds. No matter what candidates include on their resumes, you need to conduct some due diligence. If you are serious about specific candidates, make sure their work history is accurate, and check at least a reference or two. In addition, it’s helpful to check their background. For more information, see Where Can I Run a Background Check on an Individual? and Nine Tips on Checking References. For sample background check permission forms and a reference check letter, see the AllBusiness.com Employee Hiring forms. 2. Being overly influenced by advanced degrees. Candidates with plenty of letters after their names have certainly worked hard to earn their degrees. But there is no substitute for real-world business experience, and people often make the mistake of overlooking candidates with track records but not degrees. Note: this does not apply, however, to specialized fields that require advanced degrees. 3. Not having a long-range plan. Hiring someone to fill a current need can help you through a busy time. However, unless you’re hiring someone on a temporary basis, you need a long-range plan for that employee beyond your immediate need, including how you plan to develop him or her, and how he or she fits in with your company’s long-range plans. 4. Making promises you cannot keep. It can be a very costly mistake to make promises that are not well thought out. Know ahead of time what you can and cannot offer a prospective employee...

...I found with the letters and email that were inappropriate. The appreciation letter was very nice and it lets them know that you really appreciated the time for the interview. The last message of the letter “when will I be hired?” was not a wise choice. The appreciation letter is not to gain leverage on the outcome of getting hired (blatantly), but to literally ask that question in the same letter loses its merits. There are so many other alternative choices he/she could have made. They could have possibly gave the hiring manager a call to ask for an update on his status or qualification. Sometimes it’s wiser to just not explain why you failed the exam because you locked your keys in the car and couldn’t study until after midnight. Perhaps saying due to unforeseen circumstances I was not able to study for this exam, or something. The Positive aspects that I have discovered while analyzing the appreciation note was that leaving a professional thank you letter to the person that interviewed you or the hiring manager is an awesome way to gain a boost of points for yourself. Talking about the company is a good choice to talk around because it shows that you are interested. A few positive aspects that I have found while analyzing the project initiation e-mail was how he mentioned to his team members about bringing any material that can be referenced for the project, and to make extra copies for everyone. If members are left out without any material to reference about the project...

...Writing a student reference/letter of recommendation The Careers Service Centre is often asked for guidelines about what should be included in letters of reference. GENERAL GUIDELINES • • • • • • • • • (JB Aug 2012) Be specific and give examples to justify the points that you make. Request a CV or personal statement for additional information. This can inform your writing and enable you to be specific e.g. refer to anecdotes that back up points about a student's personality and ability. Raise the issue of references with students in class early in the academic year and clarify your / the Department's procedure for dealing with references. One page of a typewritten A4 page is generally sufficient - but do try to write more than one paragraph!. Students should inform you of the job(s) or course(s) they are applying for. The reader of the letter wishes to get to know the person better and you can tailor your give evidence of relevant skills, knowledge or experiences. If the letter is going to be negative, or overly bland, then tell the student who requests it in advance. The request may then be withdrawn. Some writers suggest that you avoid the gushing letter that only has positives to say and encourage you to write briefly about a weakness/area for development as it will give balance to the letter. Either way be comfortable with what you say. You can also follow the letter with a phone call. Do not substitute a telephone reference for a written one if that is what is requested...

...Letter of Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King constructs his letter by his use of Biblical allusion references, and his use of Rhetorical Appeals such as Logos, Pathos, and Ethos which is shown throughout the letter. He gives us the oppositions arguments and answers them. (Pathos)As Dr. Martin Luther King begins his letter with emotional appeal towards him being in the Birmingham jail, he starts off saying “While confined here in the Birmingham City Jail”. This shows his emotion as being limited. “We know through painful experience…freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded” Martin Luther Kings expresses in the letter how freedom is not given to us we have to demand it and empower it. This is just some of the many emotional appeals he discusses. (ethos) Dr.Martin Luther King gives us a appeal to authority. He gives credit to many such as Paul, Christian Leadership Conference, Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, People or groups whom he respected and felt they were good men or leaders. (logos) Dr. Martin Luther King use of Biblical allusion such as “Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns” just goes to show his knowledge of the bible. It gives us a well know reference to things that are happening. He doesn’t stop there with the biblical allusion he gives us more “just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and...

...Business Writing Business writing is similar to technical writing; the concerns and strategies are the same. You start by collecting information—whether you're writing a letter, an email, a press release, or preparing a presentation, you start by gathering your thoughts and doing research. The research might involve reading relevant research papers, clinical trials, and review articles. You may want to talk with researchers, colleagues, or peruse your notes you made at relevant meetings.... It's a good idea to begin by asking yourself "What am I trying to achieve?" If you can't answer that question. the chances of writing a good piece are slim. If you can identify your global intentions, then you can evaluate your information, arguments, and recommendations against those intentions. Start immediately to identify the main issues, think about how to organize them, make some notes, brainstorm, and so on. By focusing your thoughts, you've started to think about what your readers might want or need to know. ------------------------------------------------- Some Things To Keep In Mind This is the same list of strategies used for technical writing: 1. Understand the type of report/memo/synopsis you are writing—find examples and notice the structure and organization other authors have used 2. Write down your global intentions—a phrase or two that captures the gist of your potential writing 3. Tentatively identify possible sections and subsections—this is a brainstorming...
