...online 7 June 2012 We investigate the effect of standard setters in standard setting. We examine how certain professional and political characteristics of FASB members and SEC commissioners predict the accounting ‘‘reliability’’ and ‘‘relevance’’ of proposed standards. Notably, we find FASB members with backgrounds in financial services are more likely to propose standards that decrease ‘‘reliability’’ and increase ‘‘relevance,’’ partly due to their tendency to propose fair-value methods. We find opposite results for FASB members affiliated with the Democratic Party, although only when excluding financialservices background as an independent variable. Jackknife procedures show that results are robust to omitting any individual standard setter. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D72 D78 G18 K22 L51 M41 Keywords: Accounting FASB Politics Relevance Reliability Standard setting 1. Introduction As the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) closes in on four decades, the role of its standards in shaping U.S. and international corporate reporting is widely acknowledged. An empirical literature on the political economy of FASB standard setting has emerged over that period to explore the origins of accounting standards largely through an analysis of constituent comment-letter lobbying (e.g., Watts and Zimmerman, 1978). But such...

...Demystifying the American Graduate Admissions Process Karthik Raghunathan Graduate Class of 2010 Stanford Computer Science kr@cs.stanford.edu Abstract This paper attempts to discuss at length the various factors (along with their respective weightage) that the admissions committee at a top graduate school in the US takes into account while reviewing a Master of Science (MS) application. Disclaimer This paper is a mixture of facts, inferences and extrapolations, based on my personal experience as an admissions committee member at Stanford. All views expressed here are solely mine and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of Stanford University. 1. Introduction In this paper, I outline the various parameters involved in the complex decision making process of a Masters admissions committee in a top graduate school in the US. To clarify this further, (i) This report is mainly targeted at MS applicants, but a lot of it can be extended to PhD applications as well. In most cases, the requirements for a PhD admit will just be a stricter version of those mentioned here. (ii) I do not have a specific list of universities in mind when I say "a top graduate school". Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley and CMU are certainly up there, but I am not particularly referring to any specific list of graduate school rankings. In a more general sense, I am talking about schools where the default attitude of the admissions committee is "rejected, unless strongly proved otherwise" rather...

...were several issues that I found with the letters and email that were inappropriate. The appreciation letter was very nice and it lets them know that you really appreciated the time for the interview. The last message of the letter “when will I be hired?” was not a wise choice. The appreciation letter is not to gain leverage on the outcome of getting hired (blatantly), but to literally ask that question in the same letter loses its merits. There are so many other alternative choices he/she could have made. They could have possibly gave the hiring manager a call to ask for an update on his status or qualification. Sometimes it’s wiser to just not explain why you failed the exam because you locked your keys in the car and couldn’t study until after midnight. Perhaps saying due to unforeseen circumstances I was not able to study for this exam, or something. The Positive aspects that I have discovered while analyzing the appreciation note was that leaving a professional thank you letter to the person that interviewed you or the hiring manager is an awesome way to gain a boost of points for yourself. Talking about the company is a good choice to talk around because it shows that you are interested. A few positive aspects that I have found while analyzing the project initiation e-mail was how he mentioned to his team members about bringing any material that can be referenced for the project, and to make extra copies for everyone. If members are left out without any material to reference...
