...INTRODUCTION In the town of Lexington, Massachusetts, the real estate company VALMAX has received many complaints from two sets of customers: the first set believes that they were advised to post asking-prices for their houses that were too low compared to other brokers’ listings while the second set believes that they were advised to accept selling-prices for houses that they purchased that were too high relative to the selling-prices for houses brokered by other realtors. Based on the given data for both VALMAX and the other brokers (will henceforth be called “OTHERS”), it is decided that the clients’ complaints are justified. In order to properly come up with this conclusion, the correct data must first be chosen, the null and alternative hypotheses must be stated, the degrees of freedom will be calculated, the rejection region will be defined, and ultimately, the test statistic will be calculated and interpreted. After this, there are three methods for coming up with the end conclusion, the first being qualitative and the last two being quantitative. ANALYSIS Choosing the Data: Three sets of data are given for both VALMAX and OTHERS for which we assume to be normally distributed: asking prices, selling prices, and the differences between the two. Either the asking/selling prices can be used or the differences data can be used, but not both. The reason why we have chosen to not use the asking and selling price data is because we cannot distinguish between the buying...

...County is mentioned, first in the beginning of the book, as the county in which Deanna resided before she took on her job in the national forest. There is no such county in Virginia, Kentucky, or West Virginia (“List of Counties in Virginia”, “Kentucky Counties”, “List of Counties in West Virginia”). Egg Fork is introduced in the book as the town within Zebulon County, near where the setting takes place (Kingsolver 17). There is also no such town in Virginia, Kentucky, or West Virginia (“Virginia Towns”, “Places in Kentucky that start with E”, “List of towns in West Virginia”) called Egg Fork. Kingsolver also uses geographical things which resemble real world things of the same name, but their location has been moved or modified. Lexington, Kentucky is distant from the novel’s surroundings near the Kentucky-Virginia border, where the setting is based. A Toyota factory is discussed, as if local...

...Kentucky House Bill 1 Kentucky House Bill 1 is an infringement on our basic civil rights because the Kentucky State Government is now involved with regulating what doctors can and can not prescribe; it denies access to medicine for lower socio-economic level patients, illegal, and legal substitutes will replace prescription medications and random urine tests and pill counts make patients guilty until proven innocent. The goal of this piece of legislation is to address the prescription drug abuse problem by limiting the availability of certain controlled substances through increased regulation and oversight. In order to uphold this Bill many people will have to give up their basic rights so that Kentucky Law Enforcement can crack down on any suspicious activity within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. One of the most important rights we have as Americans is our right to doctor patient confidentiality. The doctor patient confidentiality agreement was set in place so doctors could treat their patients as they see fit. Kentucky State Legislators do not believe that doctors are doing everything in their power to help stem the drug problem that has been killing people here for over 20 years. So their answer was KASPER, “Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting” system. This system was designed to track prescribed controlled substances and doctor visits. For example, if you were to feel extreme back pain you would go to your doctor, and he/she would write up a prescription...

...vegetation natural to this region can live in temperatures between -10 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. In Scott County, the amount of precipitation generally decreases in January and steadily increases until July, when it then remains relatively constant (Bush, 2011). Kentucky is made up of seven ecological regions, known as ecoregions. Scott County is part of the Inner Bluegrass ecoregion. The land in this region varies from nearly level to rolling hills. It also contains areas of deep, forested gorges along the Kentucky and Dix Rivers (EPA, 2012). The Inner Bluegrass is underlain with Limestone, which is used throughout the region. Thoroughbred horse farms, cattle grazing, tobacco and alfalfa are common land uses in this region. In fact, Lexington (very near Scott County) is known as the “Horse Capital of the World”. In Scott County, there are 221 native and non-native animal species, according to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (Schenk, 2011). ...similarities that brought their unity closer than the men’s although it did not occur to anyone that the women were the ones who were to hold this nation together behind closed doors. Both women were from the South and married men who were very stubborn and affected by the civil war. However, one of the first ladies would be hailed as a public symbol for peace during the war. The other first lady would go on to become a symbol of recourse as the two women who lived in separate White Houses helped to bring about a great change to our nation. Mary Todd Lincoln’s life in the White House came under very harsh conditions. During a very effacing time in the world and our country’s history, the situation helped to tear her apart. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1818 to a very distinguished family. As a young child her existence around prominent political figures such as Henry Clay helped to bolster her interest in the world around her concerning political issues. ...327 Overton Street Newport, KY 41071 June 23, 2015 Steve Beshear 704 Capitol Avenue Frankfort, KY 40601 Dear Governor Beshear: Without question, we are well aware of the heroin epidemic that has infected our communities. As time progresses more and more people are being swallowed by the black cloud that is captivating new victims every day. Unfortunately, this cannot be solved by administering a vaccine, and we must face the issue head on by providing long term residential treatment. We’ve seen the data, people are dying while they wait for treatment. Controlling an epidemic requires many resources. Our state has taken the much needed steps to get a grip on heroin abuse; however there are several dimensions of the disease where we are falling short. We have succeeded in part by controlling the flow of drugs through our cities, thus now we must focus on rebuilding healthy communities. Treatment programs, specifically in the Northern Kentucky region are lacking resources to help facilitate the rehabilitation process. According to the Northern Kentucky’s Collective Response to the Heroin Epidemic (NKCRHE), “Of the Commonwealth’s 14 regions, Northern Kentucky receives the lowest per capita allocation of federal and state funds for treatment of substance use and mental health disorders (2013, p. 12).” It is my concern that without the proper funding for more beds in our current facilities and allocation of monies to build more treatment centers the counties...

...Research Project According to Alexandra Zavis, Christine Mai-Duc, and Tina Susman in the Lexington Herald Leader, published on October 23, 2014, in the article titled “Canada’s Parliament under Fire”, they cover the story of the recent shooting in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa. This article accurately summarized the events surrounding the instance where a shooter had killed a soldier pulling guard duty at the war memorial, and then proceeded to the foyer of the parliament offices where he was stopped by a hail of gunfire. There were a few things that made this article interesting. One major part that stood out was that Canada’s “high-risk traveler” watch list has 90 people on it (Zavis, Mai-Duc and Susman). This sounds like an awfully low number considering the US probably has thousands. To me it would seem you could afford to assign 90 agents to follow these “high-risk” individuals at all times. This article was a pretty quick and easy read. It was laid out in a good chronological order with added quotes from witnesses in the area which helped it flow well. The facts have been confirmed by numerous sources including those witnesses. Another interesting note is where the soldier who was killed had been identified by a friend who had recognized him in television video of paramedics trying to save his life (Zavis, Mai-Duc and Susman). The audience the authors were targeting is just about everyone who has heard about the shootings and might not have known any of the details...

... To begin, the discussion about Paul Keene and his work was a very enlightening experience. The main speaker, Ron Rumford, discussed the life of Paul Keene in depth, as the main topic of the lecture was mainly about the life of the artist. Rumford’s stressed the point that the life of Keene was very influential on the paintings that were produced, namely due to many prominent events in history. Rumford possessed a connection to the family, as he was the man who convinced Keene to put his work on display. This personal connection led to an insightful discussion that was far more in depth than if one was to search information online. Personal stories were inundated with the history of the time period in which Keene lived. The background of the works on the wall in the Leland Gallery was thorough. In sum, the artist talk was a compelling experience, especially as it was the first artist discussion I had ever attended. In addition, Rumford states that the main influences on the art of Keene reside in the many experiences lived through this artist’s lifetime. To begin, Keene was the son of an undertaker. Therefore, he grew up around death. It is only natural that his early experience with death can be seen in the subjects within his many works. This idea of death and pain can also be seen in Keene’s experience as a pilot in WWII with the Tuskegee Airmen. As a Lieutenant during this specific time, it is understandable for Keene to have experienced trials and seen a lot of death,...

...April 19, 1775, the british and the minutemen are at a standoff. Guns drawn and aimed at the opposer. The first shot goes off and they are all in combat. After four hours of fighting the minutemen defeated the British and made them retreat. The cause of the Fight of Lexington and Concord was that the British were coming to Lexington to destroy the supplies that the Patriots had in possession. Paul Revere spread the word to everyone and soon it was half across the states in a couple days. People were expecting the British as soon as they arrived. The Americans were using guerrilla warfare tactics by surprising them. The British and Americans were at a standoff and a member of the minutemen fired the first shot and caused a war. Some of the events before the fight might have actually caused the fight. The colonists didn’t like the British taxing them without representation so they started to rebel and the British weren't so fond of that so they sent an army marching toward lexington to capture two fugitives from “The Sons of Liberty”. The Continental Congress adopts the Olive Branch Petition, written by John Dickinson, which appeals directly to King George III, expresses hope for reconciliation between the colonies and Great Britain. When King George III read the letter he was greatly offended and called everyone traitors....

...Paul Revere is mostly known for his journey called “The Midnight Ride”, where he traveled from Lexington to Concord. Dr. Joseph Warren was the one who told Revere to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock, Patriot leaders, that they were to possibly be arrested by the British and they needed to hide. Revere was to also warn the patriots of when the British were coming for them. This task was received to Revere on April 19, 1775. Paul had to come up with a way to warn the Patriots on time before the British reached them. The plan was that lanterns would be used to indicate how the British were advancing. They were to be hung in the Old North Church across the river at Charleston from patriot forces. If one lantern was hung then that...
