Movin’ On Up: Have Black Sitcoms Really Changed the Black Community for the Better?

Through time, blacks in television have been able to abolish many of the pervious stereotypes from past generations. However as media progresses and blacks are becoming a more predominate part of American television, the effect of black sitcoms is being called into question when it comes to their effect on the black community. The early 70’s through the 90’s were the golden age for black sitcoms, both the good and the bad. Blacks were still portrayed as both ignorant, poor, mammy and uncle type characters in shows such as Good Times, Stanford and Son, and more recently, Tyler Perry’s house of Payne. However, many shows promoted the educated, independent, affluent black family such as The Cosby Show, The Jefferson’s, and A Different World. Do these shows truly have an effect on the black community, and even more importantly do they effect how the rest of America views them? For blacks portrayal on television perception is reality, many preconceived notions of how blacks act and carry themselves in everyday life have been eliminated, nevertheless, black sitcoms still reinforce stereotypes that have plagued the black community since the beginning of slavery.

Background: * “From Mammy to Miss America and Beyond: Cultural Images and the Shaping of U.S. Social Policy:”
A brief summery of the history of blacks on television and how this has effected the community in general. * In “Television Media as a Potential Negative Factor in the Racial Identity Development of African American Youth:”
A brief summery of their television portrayal of black and how over time how black media changed the mind set of blacks and the negative effect it has had on both the white and black community. How this has also effected the identity of the black community and how that has shaped the black psyche.

Issues with Black Sitcoms: All of these sitcoms were a step up from where the black community was before. Just being able to see themselves represented on television was a step forward from not being seen in the media at all. However many black were unable to connect and relate with the characters on television because they did not share the life style as the

* “Revolution Televised: Prime Time and The Struggle for Black Power”
Stereotypes formed my Sanford and son. Enforcing the belief that all old black crazy, slightly illiterate, and overly dramatic. Also enforces the beliefs that blacks are poor and enjoy it that way. However the fact that blacks were even being represented on television seemed to be the beginning of something revolutionary in the black community.

* “Revolution Televised: Prime Time and The Struggle for Black Power”
Good Times was a step forward for the black community. Although the family was living in the ghetto and participated in” black activities”, a strong father family who supported his family and a mother who loved and care for her children was a prominent part of the series. However, many blacks did not agree with the fact that a main issue of the show was in fact being black. For many in the black community the issue of being black was not brought up in everyday conversation like it did in Good Times.This show effect on the black community was an improvement but still had a long way to go.

This stereotype has carried from previous generations and is now plaguing the current one. Reinforcing beliefs about the black community, as a whole, that managed to keep the black population down.

* “Running head: AFRICAN‐AMERICAN SEMINAL RESEARCH 1
A Review of African-American Seminal ResearchOnyx Taylor California State University, San Bernardino”
Stereotypes found throughout black sitcoms and television in general and how those issues affect the black community. A more in depth look at Tyler Perry’s Madea character and how she has set the black community back based on her “mammy-like” characteristics. However Madea was still a strong, independent black woman who spoke her mind. Although she was uneducated and ignorant that fact that was never bowed her head, or was subservient to whites, was a very empowering factor in the black community.

Good Things that Came from Sitcoms: blacks are moving past being represented as stereotypes. To help push this movement forward the creation of several “revolutionary” black sitcoms came to fruition and the face of the black sitcom was changed forever.

* “Enlighten Racism”
The Cosby show was truly the first of its kind. Being black was no longer the focus and main issue of a show with an all black cast. Not only was the household also a two parent household, the parents were a doctor and a lawyer; to high paying jobs that required extreme amounts of education, there by extinguishing the lie that black were uneducated and lazy. The child were also well behaved and in school, structure that lacked in black sitcoms past. However there was still criticisms why the Cosby show, that it was not a true reality for the majority of the black community. Over all however, it shed a favorable light on the black community and allowed many blacks to break the bound of stereotypes.

* A Different World: The Post-Millennial Perils of Black Family T.V. Programming
This show was relevant, intelligent, and a positive influence for all because it dealt with everything from AIDS to post grad studies. This show captured the “black experience” yet did not enforce by any black stereotypes. Was relatable to both the white and black community and helped bridge the gap between what people thought about the black community and what was truly fact about the black community.

Closing:

Now with interracial marriage and black main characters on network televisions shows, is there still a need for the black sitcom? The professional black character has slowly integrated their way in to every American home through television, yet stereotypes still accrue in black sitcoms; the most surprising being, those sitcoms are written and produced by black members of the media community. Reducing the black sitcom to the point of extinction and allowing blacks to integrate fully into television, just as they have done in real life, would be the best way to destroy the stereotypes.

A Certainty of Life: Death

...certainty of life: Death Two of Emily Dickenson’s poems, [Because I could not stop for Death] (1254) and [After great pain, a formal feeling comes] (932) are both about one of life’s few certainties: death. In Dickenson's poems, death is often personified, and illustrates a very different view on death than the traditional horror movie. Through the use of characters, imagery, and setting, Dickenson creates amazingly powerful poems that offer a creative and yet extremely different perspective on death. The characters in each of these two poems allow us two extremely different perspectives on death. One perspective is how it feels to be dead and look at life the other being how to deal with death when you are the one who is left behind. Also the different perspectives regarding the fear people have of dying and the emotions that surround it. In [Because I could not stop for Death], death appears as kind and compassionate. The woman fears death until she finally meets it and is welcomed by it “He kindly stopped for me” (2). The word kindly gives a vision of a kind and gentle man, a friend and a companion. In [After great pain, a formal feeling comes] the feeling is quit different in that it depicts the suffering of the people left behind. It shows death as cold and harsh and something that causes pain and suffering. Even though the emotions in both poems are completely different both show time passage as a very important part of death, in that death tends remove...

Ancient Greek Philosophy and the New Testament

...Sheila Castillo Survey of Literature 1 (LITR 1157) Miss Sangster March 27, 2014 Plato, Ancient Greek Philosopher relation to the New Testament Christopher Stead, a professor of the University of Cambridge argues in his Book Philosophy in Christian Antiquity, that Christianity was influenced by panoply of Greek philosophy, including Plato (Shandon L. Guthrie par. 2). Plato was an Athenian citizen of high status, a classical philosopher that lived from 429–347 Before Christ Existed. He died at age 81; he believed strongly in logic and reason. Moreover, his works contained discussions in aesthetics, political philosophy, theology, cosmology, epistemology, and the philosophy of language (Plato par 1). Although Plat existed way “Before Christ Existed” and even before the New Testament was developed, his philosophy seems to have some sort of relation to The New Testament and as Professor Shandon Guthrie mentioned the New Testament for a fact was influenced by Greek philosophers, especially Plato. Their commonalities involve their belief of the immortality of our human souls and dualism, the theory that human beings are made up of two independent constituents, the body and the mind or soul. These facts will present how Plato and the New Testament had relations of their views. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28, NIV). Firstly, stated this bible verse it emphasizes...

Death Penalty

...The Death Penalty AJS/552 WK 4 Professor: Joseph Laronge March 31, 2015 By: Tammy J Argie In a time when the people ask that all crimes be punished in some way shape or form the one that has caused the most controversy is the death penalty or also known as capital punishment. Whether on is for or against the death penalty we must remember it has been around since the late eighteenth century B.C. All crimes in that time were punished by death no matter what the crime was. When William the Conquer ruled he allowed only hangings to take place for murders and nothing else (Part 1: History of the death penalty, 2015). The first person to convicted and killed under a death penalty law was Captain George Kendall for being accused of being a spy for Spain. As times changed so did the laws for the death penalty as well as the methods. When hanging, crucifixion, burning alive, drowning, and impalement where used new methods over the years have changed. The use of the electric chair was built in 1860 but began being used in 1890. The first execution by the electric chair was William Frances Kemmler who was convicted of murdering his lover (Part 1: History of the death penalty, 2015). This would be the method used for years to come. As the years progressed and laws changed so did the sentencing of crimes and the death penalty. The last person to date that was electrocuted in the electric chair was Robert Gleason on January 16th of 2013 (Daily mail, 2013). Robert Gleason wanted...

Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma Part 1

...Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma Part 1 Grand Canyon University April 26, 2013 Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma Part 1 Voluntary and assisted euthanasia have been and will continue to be one of the most controversial ethical debates in the medical field. Euthanasia stems from the Greek language: eu meaning good and thanatos meaning death. The practice of voluntary euthanasia is when the patient requests to die but someone else has to perform the act, for example removing the patient from all life-sustaining equipment or giving a lethal injection. Where as the definition of assisted suicide is a physician prescribes a lethal dose of medication and the patient on his or her own will have to perform the act of consuming the medication to cause death. There are many ethical implications that arise from either option. “In the balance are crucial issues: personal autonomy, dignity, compassion, ending suffering, protection of the vulnerable, promotion of good palliative care, and redefinition of the role of the physician in death and dying” (Van Norman, (2012). It is imperative for nurses to be conscious of their obligations professionally, educated on the laws surrounding the issue, who the stakeholders involved are, the impact on social values/morals, and the ethical theories and principals involved. Nursing Obligation According to the American Nurses Association nurses are never allowed to have any part in euthanasia, such actions would be a direct violation of the...

...The Federal gift tax is imposed on the right to transfer property by one person (the donor) to another (the donee) for less than full and adequate consideration. The tax is payable by the donor. If the donor fails to pay the tax when due, the donee may be held liable for the tax to the extent of the value of the property received Since the donor cannot pay or cannot be located, as in the this case, the IRS can pursue the donees for the tax under the doctrine of transferee liability. For individual who are neither residents nor citizens of the United States (i.e. nonresidents a liens, or NRAs), the Federal gift tax appliles only to gifts of property situated within the United States. Exempted, however, are gifts of intangibles, such as stock and bonds. For decedents who are nonresident aliens, the Federal estate tax is imposed on the value of property located within the United States. However, unlike the gift tax, the estate tax applies to stock in U.S. corporations. Mr. Kim's concerns are groundless. Except for property located within the United States, the Federal estate tax does not apply to nonresident aliens. The country in which a person happens to die has no relevance in regard to the application of U.S. transfer taxes. For NRAs, any gifts of properties (other than intangibles) located within the United States will be subject to the federal gift tax.
