...proud of. Where I come from though, it is used as a tool to encourage the youth to make something out of themselves. I am not saying that other sports cannot impact someone’s life, but basketball has always highlighted most kids’ childhoods. There were always different types of ballers back in the day though. One of the fundamental divisions of sports is into team and individual activities. Basketball can be broken down into many different groups. That depends on a few factors such as, geography, culture, and skill. In the United States we have the highest level of basketball, the NBA. Now even in the pros there are a few levels that can be broken down. There are the greatest players, Jordan or LeBron, and then you have players that do not even make it a full year. There is the kind of ball player that practices every single day trying to perfect his craft, and maybe make it to the pros. He is the guy that does not have the newest sneakers or the most expensive gear. That stuff does not matter to him. He will never be able to attend one pro ball game, but will never miss a game on his local television channels. He will imitate every move, like the one Iverson crossed Jordan with, and he will dedicate his life to school because he knows that basketball is merely a dream. There is the kind of baller that just does one thing, shoot the ball. He does not care about running up and down the court, dunking, or even passing. This guy is what I call a three point camper. He will...

...Rough Draft Sociology is an important area of science. It is the study of people, their interactions and the actions of individuals. It helps solve conflict and problems it also helps to prevent issues from developing in the future. In other words sociology is the study of human beings and how they react to each other and their environment. Sports are a big part of human culture in all parts of the world. It transcends all races, ages, and social constructs. Sociology of Sports is the study of the relationships between sports and society. It is an important sub-field of sociology that examines the many interpersonal and group phenomena that arises in relationship to sports. It covers all area in which sports affect and is affected by. The sociology of sports examines how culture and values influence sports as well as how sports influence culture and values. One could say that it has no boundaries. Sociology of sports also examines the relationships between sports and the media, politics, economic, religion, race and gender, as well as social inequality and social mobility ( Crossman, 2013). The sport I chose to research is basketball. Basketball is a game that continually amazes. Its fast pace and high flying aerial display has made basketball one of the most popular games in America. Basketball is a court game played by two teams of 5 players each. The object of this court game is to put a ball through a hoop or basket, and score more points than the other...

...The Mayan society is one of many complex, individual civilizations. In the Mayan society, there are multiple cultures and values. We learn multiple things from the Mayans and they helped start out many civilizations. There are many connections and value I learned from the Popol Vuh and the Mesopotamian Geography points. Some connections I can make relate to the Kente proverbs. One connection is to the Kente proverb “ It is the mother whose child has been eaten by a witch who best knows the evils of witchcraft” This relates to the Popol Vuh because the baller children were aware of how their fathers died and they went to avenge them. Another proverb that relates to this “A tiger does not have to show his tigerness” This relates to the twins because they did not have to dress as great warriors to beat the lords of Xibalba. One modern day connection is Karma. A lot of people believe in karma which is” when you do bad, bad will come back to you” I believe the Lords of Xibalba got Karma because they killed the hero twins fathers when they won which was cheating, so when the hero twins defeated them they got what they deserved. Some implications that are made are that there is always more than one story. This is true because the hero twins only knew their fathers as farmers when they were really great ball players. Another implication is that sacrifices are common in every society. Even in modern times, we make sacrifices, some sacrifices we make include paying money for food or electricity...

...An emotional Popovich uncharacteristically opened up about Duncan at a retirement gathering that Duncan himself had not shown up for. "I'm trying to wrap my head around why I'm standing here and he's not. And we all know why. It's not Tim Duncan. We've been saying it for 19 years and he really only cared about doing the best job he could basketball-wise and being who he was for his teammates and being somebody who loved his family. That's really who he is.......he is the most real, consistent, true person I have ever met in my life. He was so genuine, it blows your mind......And he led by example. He had a vision. Everybody bought into his vision. He was accepting. He was not judgmental of people." Tim Duncan is one of the All-Time Greats, not only as a baller, but as a leader and visionary. He went out with the same class he carried throughout his long...

...How Real Are Facebook friendships Facebook serves as a social network where all titles are put into the "friend" basket. Its initial objective was to serve as a way of interacting with the people in your life; however, studies show that Facebook is being utilized to keep tabs on people you really don't care too much for. According to the "Merriam-Webster Dictionary", friend (as a verb) means, to add someone to a list of contacts associated with a social networking website. The concept of "friending" someone on Facebook is an effortless act; however as well as unfriending someone on a virtual basis. Being Facebook "friends" contradicts the purpose of being able to stay connected with those your closely associated with. Your selection of Facebook "friends" will determine the company you virtually keep. I know that when I login to my account, I know what I can look forward to on my timeline. I will scroll into the insecure couple who virtually survive off "likes" and comments from supporters (that would've otherwise played out). These are broken relationships that consist of a woman who has something to prove to her "friend" better known as the woman who her man previously dated. On Facebook, the relationship status is peaches and cream until the vindictive ex-girlfriend exposes him. So now at this point, everybody's watching only to see how the situation will unfold. This has absolutely nothing to do with being a "friend" on Facebook. It serves more as a social media soap...

...Attention show stoppers, ballers and freak-a-leeks: As you shake your moneymaker to the latest Ludacris jam, more than just a catchy tune may be seeping in your head, you may want to know that music is often accused for influencing certain behaviors, but is this really so? Music being very prevalent in our culture today it can be perceive that each adolescent has a song that relates to their everyday life… or in other words “the soundtrack of their life.” but some will say that they are innocently listening to one of their favourite song or artist. But is their something more? Can the content of a song influence actions or behaviors? Does music influence latent harmful behaviours? Steve Martino said “"When young people are trying to figure out who they are and who they should be, a lot of them turn to the media," In the media it seems that certain groups that are affiliated with particular genres of music, often seen with styles such as rap and hard-rock/heavy metal, are pinpointed when something within their community goes awry, as having been strongly influenced by the music they listen to. Let us take a look at some examples at where the media accused music for the major cause of adolescent related incedents. One of the most infamous music-influencing-behavior misconceptions is the Columbine High School shooting in Littleton, a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, on Apr. 20, 1999, in which 12 students as well as a teacher were fatally injured, as well as 24 others who...

...stood tall and confident delivering his speech which made it even more influential. In addition, former president Obama divided his speech into sections to support his argument on how to end inequality. The following sections that support the argument are how parents can help, growth in education, and how the government can pitch in to help the issue. Parents play an enormous portion of a child’s life. Obama agrees, and says, “To parents, we can’t tell our kids to do well in school and fail to support them when they get home. For our kids to excel, we must accept our own responsibilities.” This means that parents need to show up to parent-teacher conferences, read to their children, and help them with their homework. In addition, put away their children’s electronics and lay their kids to bed at a sensible time. Also, Obama states, “It also means pushing our kids to set their sights higher. They might think they’ve got pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be the next LeBron or Lil Wayne.” In other words, most kids this generation want to be ballers and rappers, we...

...different effects on teen’s language and behavior. Some negative some positive. When most people think of rap music today they immediately think of the gangster mentality, drug dealing, fighting, smoking, and killing. Rap paints a picture to a child of what is going on in the streets. It has a much bigger influence on teens because children who live in poverty strictened areas already have an idea of what that life is really like. Lots of times it comes down to children wanting to be considered "cool". If you are a teenager, being cool probably is a top priority to you. Lots of times you will find that teens are relating with one particular emotion that is expressed in the music. Some teens feel that way because their parents don’t take the time out to listen to them or the problems they have. When parents connect with their teen, it makes them feel complete and they will normally begin to open up more to their parents. Many teens feel like rap and hip-hop relates to their life or lifestyle. As a teen some music I listen to does relate to part of the way people live or real life situations. There are many things in rap and hip-hop lyrics that drive teens to act the way they act and use the language they use. The way they dress, the things they say, the language, the sexual comments they make, and who rap or sings the song. Teens see videos where the women are dressed in short skirts with sports bras, and men wearing pants hanging off their butt, big...

Basketball has had a commanding presence in my life ever since my childhood. I feel alive on a basketball court, and I feel like myself. The pace of the game brings the best out of me. It has shaped me into who I am today, and it continues to do so daily. From making the 7th grade team to becoming varsity captain in high school, the game of basketball did not only improved my skills, but developed me into a stronger young adult. The game made me tough in important aspects, especially turning me into a leader. I learned to be mentally and physically stronger, and more self-confident in myself as...

...Bullying Bullying in schools is believed to be a normal part of school life, however, when people begin to have this mentality, they forget that bullying is physically and psychologically harmful to both the bully and the victim. Therefore, bullying must be eradicated from schools by raising awareness and increasing supervision. Bullying is no joke in my opinion I think that people are just rude and mean. Maybe that’s not always the case but I should know I am a victim of bullying. I became a victim of bullying my third grade year. Lisa would always call me names and tell me how fat I was, like it was my fault I was fat. I had asthma grown up as a child. I had really bad asthma and that consisted of steroids shots. Some days I couldn’t even almost breathe. My bully didn’t care in what I was going though. Sometimes I think if she really new what I was going though would she have stop bullying me? As a kid I didn’t know how to deal with my baller. At first I didn’t realized that I was getting bully. My first bully I thought just maybe she jealous of me growing up as a kid. In a way I kind of felt like she envy me. Maybe I had something she didn’t have, like loving family or parents that were together at the time. Maybe none of that meant nothing to her. I would always wonder why. As the years went on and I moved up in school the bullying got a lot worst. Now it was time to find out why. Why people enjoyed bullying me so much and to were I had low self-esteem. Sometimes I...

...Introduction The Reebok shoe company is like a streaky jump shooter; when they are hot they are hot, but when they are not nobody is interested. This has been a way of life for the Reebok brand since its inception. They wow the sneaker industry one year, just to turn around and lay an egg the next. The Reebok brand got its beginnings back in 1958 when it branched out as a sister company to JW Foster and Sons. Beginning in 1895, JW Foster and Sons started to manufacture shoes and sell them all over the United Kingdom. Even though they never garnered much attention, they were successful enough to be worn by the athletes in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Then in 1958, Foster’s grandsons decided to branch out to form a new company which they would call Reebok. They picked the name Reebok, which means African Gazelle, because they wanted to depict speed, style, and grace. Even though the company was selling the shoes at a decent rate in the United Kingdom, they were still having a hard time getting the shoes noticed on a world wide scale. But in 1979 this would all change. At the Chicago International sneaker trade show, Paul Fireman took notice of the Reebok brand. At the time, Fireman was working for an outdoor sporting goods distributor, and immediately saw great potential in the Reebok brand. He was drawn in by the customization of each shoe, as well as the high quality. Fireman felt that those two qualities alone would make this brand a hit with the North American population...

...brothers from the hood shooting like this is TNT lately And since all the ballers leaving college early I turn on the TV and don't see no brothers with degrees lately The third verse the ends and continues into a bridge section of the song, where J Cole sings about his displeasure of segregation in twenty-first century society. Are we all alone, fighting on our own Please give me a chance, I don't wanna dance Somethings got me down, I will stand my ground Don't just stand around, don't just stand around The performance then continues using voice recordings of Dorian Johnson and his recollection of his first hand experience with police brutality and the events that took place before his friends death. J Cole uses these recordings as a protest against police brutality and to convey the message of racial stereotyping when approached by police. [Eyewitness account from Dorian Johnson:] So now it was like the officer is pulling him inside the car and he's trying to pull away. At no time the officer said that he was going to do anything until he pulled out his weapon. His weapon was drawn and he said, "I'll shoot you" or, "I'm going to shoot" and in the same moment, the first shot went off. We looked down and he was shot and there was blood coming from him. Then we took off running [Eyewitness account from Dorian Johnson:] As we took off running I ducked and hid for my life, because I was fearing for my life. I hid behind the first car I saw. My friend, he kept running, and he told...

...Running head: AIDS/HIV IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY MBA 530 Community Health Evaluation/Epidemiology Dr. Patricia Pierce Latoya Blain 06/17/2012 AIDS/HIV in the African American Community Of all the ethnic and racial groups of the United States of America, the African Americans are the ones who have been to a larger extent faced with the HIV/AIDS burden. Statistics show that more than two hundred and thirty thousand African Americans have already passed on as a result of AIDS- a figure which represents 40% of the total deaths in the U.S. Besides, it is estimated that those living with HIV in the U.S. are more than one million, half of whom are blacks (NASTAD, 2005). The probability of having been infected with HIV/AIDS among the African Americans is one on every 16 (for the black males) and 1 in every 30 people (for the black women). Washington D.C. has the highest prevalence of HIV infection, at three percent; with 75% of the infected people being African Americans. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy has reported that African Americans form the greatest proportion of the many cases of HIV/AIDS in the various transmission sorts, including among women, injection drug users, infants and heterosexual men (The White House, 2010). From the above statistics, one may, therefore, wonder African Americans as affected by AIDS in such a disproportionate manner. Historically, it was back in the early 1980s...
