The statement, “Life has more possibilities than limits” by Christopher Reeves in the movie Life Without Pity epitomizes the meaning of the documentary. Perhaps the most inspiring of the characters was also the youngest, Charlie. He was a baby that was born without arms or legs. Don’t pity this young man; for what he lacks in physical stature is more than accounted for in heart, and spirit. He doesn’t let anything hold him back, he moves around on his own, he’s dependent, doing everything he possibly can. Charlie is self-confident, happy and outgoing. He meets every student in the school, and gives them the opportunity to ask questions. Instead of the students realizing Charlie’s differences they realize that he is a boy, a person, who thinks, and feels just like them. Charlie does chores like every other child, solves math problems on the chalk board, and plays on a trampoline just like any other child because he is just like every other person, and even a little more. The purpose of his story is not for anyone to pity him. We are all people with unique qualities and talents. Charlie is no exception. His physical appearance is no limitation; it’s an exploration of possibilities, and in his case they are endless. He, as all the others are human beings that have a lot to teach the rest of us. Those with disabilities have a right to an equal chance at life. They should be understood and recognized for who they are, for their humanity... without

Oedipus

...Assignment 1 Extract 4 (Sophocles, Oedipus the King) In Greek Tragedy the medium, as in all forms of poetry is language, to convey a story through an imitation of an action, or as Aristotle defines in S.H. Butcher’s translation of Poetics “Tragedy is a mimesis of a praxis.” (Jones, 2000). This translates to an imitation/ representation of an action. Oedipus the King is structured into five episodes with a prologue to begin, each scene is introduced by the Chorus (the citizens of Thebes) who depict the state of affairs within Thebes. The city is plagued, as a Priest describes to Oedipus “look around you, see with your own eyes- our ship pitches wildly, cannot lift her head from the depths, the red waves of death… Thebes is dying. A blight on the fresh crops and rich pastures, cattle sicken and die, and the women die in labor, children stillborn, and the plague, the fiery god of fever hurls down on the city.” (L 28 – 34) This shows us that Thebes is being punished, and Oedipus, as the King of Thebes is begged by his subjects to put an end to the curse. This shows a good use of dramatic irony, as in fact it was Oedipus who is responsible for the actions of the gods. Oedipus has two conflicts going on within him, the first is that he does not want to kill who he believes is his father, “the man who reared me” (L 916) and the second is he does not want to lay with his mother. These conflicts have followed Oedipus and his father Laius...

Drug Abuse Among Teenagers

...Speir Drug Abuse Among Teenagers The topic which I selected to write about is Drug Abuse Among Teenagers, which I am totally against any type of drug abuse because of the devastating effects it have on our future young people. Our nation has been trying to successfully overcome the problem with drug-abuse among teenagers for the past twenty years. Children from the ages of sixteen through twenty use drugs more than any other age group in America. (Life 123, 2011). One of the keys to combating this illness is through awareness. Learning the facts can help one see the risk that it causes. It is vital that we continue to raise community awareness as well about the nature and seriousness of this fatal disease. Nowadays, drug abuse among teenagers not only affect the individual, but also the family, and society as a whole. Some teenagers can use recreational drugs without any negative consequences, but for many others substance abuse can cause problems at home, work, school, and relationships leaving one feeling self-pity, isolation and shame. (Helpguide, 2011). The information that I am providing hopefully will give more insight into this substance abuse among our teenagers and what we can do to help eliminate this problem in our society. The effects which drugs have on the individual varies from how often they use them, how much is consumed, and how quickly the drugs get into the brain. Listed are some drugs and their effects, amphetamines are stimulants that moves quickly...

Stereotyping Perpetuates Racism

...the Ted Talk “The Danger of a Single Story,” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie shares her personal story to show the audience how freely one can succumb to the perils of stereotyping, without even realizing it. Tanzina Vega also illustrates this in her New York Times article “Schools’ Discipline for Girls Differs by Race and Hue,” where she reports on information from a sociological study that exposes the difference in how a girl is punished based on the shade of her skin color. Additionally Ta-Nehisi Coates’ essay “Letter to My Son” demonstrates many stereotypes as he writes a very personal piece passing on his knowledge to his 15-year-old son on several important themes including consequences from generations of stereotyping and his observations of the...

Sherman Alexie's Salt

...For this discussion assignment; I have chosen and read the “Salt” by Sherman Alexie because of the short and simplicity of the title. The story is about an 18-year old Indian boy who works as an intern for Spokesman-Review newspaper. At the last note and will/testament of his supervisor, he was chosen to write her obituary, where he had no choice but do it. In the interim, he was then instructed to write obituaries. As an amateur, he had quoted wrong pricing and pity an old lady (widowed) and he was left without a choice but to meet the old lady to collect her own obituary writing and the photo of his late husband. Met the old lady, narrated about her dead cat that came back to life, she believed because of the salt she poured on the...

...Preston 09/10/2013 Section 1: Wall Street Journal Counter Argument Counter Argument to “I’m Homeschooled-Hold the Pity, Please” “I’m Homeschooled-Hold the Pity, Please” is an article that was published in the Wall Street Journal September 9, 2013. What is interesting about this article (besides its content) is the author, who is a high school sophomore, by the name of Veronica Andreades. She explains in her writing that teenagers have asked her why her parents homeschooled her. They also suggested that she must not have any friends or that she is socially awkward. Ms. Andreade’s point in this article was to disprove that shadowing notion that homeschooling is bad, and to show that in fact, homeschooling, has proven more beneficial to her life than what public schooling had to offer. This article jumped out to me more than the other opinion articles in the Journal due to my similarities with the author. Veronica is a minister’s daughter who is homeschooled. I was also homeschooled through the sixth grade and my dad has been a minister since I was born. The second reason this article stood out to me was that I disagreed with the majority of the article even though I had gone through most of the same confrontations she wrote about with fellow teenagers. In agreement with Veronica, homeschooling can give you a competitive edge in that, you can study without the limitations of your class. The statistics typically show that homeschoolers receive higher grades than those...

Personal Essay: The Loss Of Anxiety

...I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks that I can only sort of control. I try and get enough sleep, do yoga, take meds, the whole thing. But still, my brain gets ahead of me and wants to do a pity spiral dance of disaster and worry and I can’t really stop it. It’s a handicap in a sense, where I want to be working or going out with friends or doing laundry but instead I’m curled up in bed with the lights off waiting for my benzos to kick in. (Pretty, pretty.) Sometimes people tell me it will help my anxiety to “be grateful.” That’s one piece of advice I get a lot. If I were more grateful, I wouldn’t be so anxious. I’m only anxious because I lack perspective. Because I need to take the time to look outside myself and my own problems. If I were...

Personal Responsibility

...has set expectations and goals in life that they hope to soon accomplish (Kennedy, 2009). However; not every human is perfect. Some live up to what goals and expectations they set and others either choose to go on a different path or make a wrong turn listening to backseat drivers, the normal reaction to that situation would be to hold the backseat driver accountable for the mistakes that, but the person behind the wheel should assume full responsibility. The driver has freedom of choice whether it is to listen to that person over their shoulder or listen to his or her own mind. The decision that is made in every special circumstance of our lives is responsible for our own success and failures, happiness, unhappiness, past, and future. Some people may believe because the economy is bad they can blame others for their actions. Honestly, becoming the owner of personal responsibility and accepting the choices made will make you a successful person. First of all I am extremely happy and excited about the programs and tutorials that University of Phoenix provides students to help them obtain excellence in class. The Evolution of the Hero

...Hum I: Philos. Thought (HUM-101-OL010) Written Assignment 2 18 May 2013 The Evolution of the Hero Heroes are part of every culture’s mythology and the most famous and diverse is that of ancient Greece. In order for us to assess the development of the Heroic ideal in ancient Greek culture, we must be able to identify where the Hero’s identity comes from. The Heroic identity has been useful for thousands of years, serving as a perfect representation of a super-human, a human that is capable of dealing with problems that require unique skills and knowledge beyond that of a normal person. But where does it come from? The answer is simple. A Hero’s identity has its roots in the culture it lives in. That is to say, the Hero’s identity is a direct reflection and embodiment of the values and ideals of its society. The Hero is society’s way of reproducing its values and beliefs for the next generation. As a result, the characteristics that make up a Hero are as varied and different as the cultures that created them. When examining the evolution of Heroic ideals, one must be aware of the always changing cultural conditions and the necessity of the Hero’s criterion to fit an ever evolving society. If you look at Homer’s The Illiad, his portrayal of a Hero is someone who is famous, has great strength, kills many people and governs strongly. The Homeric Hero must obey all of society’s customs and religious rituals, and if threatened, was required...

Pros on Technology

...Have people ever thought about technology helping us improve our society? Although some people claim that we developed technology to make our lives easier and make it become our servants. Our opponents also think that we will always depend on technology and decide to let it do everything. Well, who would want to work harder and do everything by hand while having technology sit right in front of you and help you? However, there are several reasons to oppose this point of view because technology is currently helping us suppress diseases and helping us complete our jobs. There is great debate over whether technology should be allowed to go ahead or should it cease to continue all together. A negative effect of technology is the fact that many products as the result of technology are said to the beginning if the dehumanization of society. On the other hand, the production of new technology really creates a more advanced and convenient society for all of us to live in. There are many inventions that can help us in our daily lives to communicate and interact with people on a personal level, a business level, and a societal level. Technology has become a very important part of our personal lives.Technology can be helpful on an everyday basis because we can communicate and bond with our family, friends, and ourselves. The time that people, including children, these days spend in front if the television would be much better spent if they were to spend that time and communicating...

Personal Narrative Essay

...Every Sunday at my house, I help my mother cook for the family and we have a family dinner all together. This one Sunday in December I felt kind of woozy and went to my room to lie down for a bit. It didn’t help, and in fact that woozy feeling stayed with me for almost 4 months. That night my mom took me to the IN and OUT clinic in Lufkin. I did a bunch of balance tests and was relieved by the doctor’s diagnostic that I was not suffering from a stroke. The dizziness feeling was worse when I moved too quickly or was doing too much activity. The worst part was the fact that my memory started getting worse and worse. When I read my text, social media or my homework assignments I couldn’t understand what was going on. I understood a single word by its self but not the whole context of the full sentence....

Allegory of Teh Cave

...Unit 2 Assignment HU250-04 - Humanities and Culture Rick OMahony Kaplan University 24 June 2014 Unit 2 Assignment “The Allegory of the Cave”, the 7th book of Plato’s, The Republic”, can be interpreted in many ways. Depending on the point of view of the reader, the message can describe the trials and tribulations of man in general to the roadway of life and all of the detours along the way. The first entry of the allegory has Socrates describing a cave in which there are prisoners. The prisoners have limited sight since they are chained at the neck and legs and can see in only one direction. There is light from a fire which allows the prisoners to see shadows on the wall form passing men. My interpretation of this starts at the beginning. Actually one line which speaks of the prisoners; …here they have been from their childhood… (Plato (interpretation by Benjamin Jowett), 2012) I feel this is the interpretation of man from his birth. The cave represents the town or village of birth for the person (prisoner). The prisoners are the people born into and raised in this village. The chains around their neck and legs are the limits of the village from which the children have yet to venture past. The wall represents the village limits which is the barrier to the world. The fire casting shadows tells of merchants that come to the village to trade. The children (prisoners) see these people briefly with little or no interaction with them. This represents a world beyond...

...was conducting it, I had some very interesting, embarrassing, exhausting and informative incidents that I can use to my personal and professional advantage in the future. I will provide an analysis of skills demonstrated while conducting the experience along with specific examples to enlighten you on the experience. I have taken into consideration the environmental barriers that I experienced along my four hours often-agonizing journey, and will present a description of architectural and transportation barriers. Social reactions and personal reactions to the wheelchair experience will also be stated. And, I will conclude with professional implications and strategies that will help people without disabilities enhance their attitudes toward people with disabilities in the workplace and in life as general. Situation/Setting/Description Getting oriented with and accustomed to using a wheelchair seemed like it was going to be easy. At the beginning of my experience, I didn't fully understand how challenging using a non-motorized wheelchair would be. I rented a wheelchair from a local medical supply store, that was fairly new, and had only been used once or twice in the past according to the store clerk. Observation/Reflection I tried to imitate a disabled person in a wheelchair as much possible as I could : When I tried to get out of bed in a hurry, I couldn't just get up, get in the shower and go. Essay On The Fullmetal Alchemist

...little more care of it.” At that, smaller Elric glared up at his younger brother, signaling that the suit of armor should shut up or risk losing an arm. After that the two walked in silence towards their dorms. What the older brother didn’t get was why he had to go and not one of the other fully capable State Alchemists from Eastern Command. Just because he was the youngest State Alchemist in history, didn’t mean he had to inspect every mine in Amestris. Plus, he had better things to do besides run around doing errands for the Colonel Bastard. He and Al had to get their bodies back, and that wasn’t going to happen while inspecting a damn mine. “Uh...Major Elric sir?” The tiny, breathless voice brought Ed out of his thoughts and back to his life, which thoroughly sucked at the moment. “Yes?” The young turned around and was greeted by a saluting officer with her brown hair pulled back in the standard bun of an Amestrian secretary. The woman stood there saluting the alchemist for a few seconds before realizing that she had been addressed. “I’m sorry sir this is my first day and I’m still trying to get the hang of things. May I please be pardoned for my lack of attention?” Edward stared at the woman with an annoyed expression. He really was not in the mood to deal with the formal language of the military. “Yeah sure…” the alchemist trailed off when he noticed the single suitcase that the woman was holding in her left hand. He immediately knew that it was from that bastard of a Colonel...

Being Successful

...scheduling myself to study for certain courses like math, and actually invest my time. By investing your time and dedication, you are not only fulfilling your course requirements, but you end up retaining all the knowledge and gaining information you did not know coming into the course. Another tool I had to use more was time management. In college and in life, you are always being put up to the clock. In college you have around four or five classes, all that require some type of homework. This can range from reading to math problems you need to write out in detail. Having to manage classes, work and a social life is no easy task, but when you are a freshman and new to everything, it can seem like the end of the world. While I could ride with this excuse, at the end of the day, it is still an excuse. I had to buckle down and begin sectioning off time for studying at the library, going to office hours (which I never went to before) and actually sitting down and trying to comprehend what I was trying to learn. This was a good trait to kick in because in life you need time management. Without it, you can be late on assignments, not know what to do at a certain time, or lose track of deadlines. Saying engaged both in and out of the classroom took a substantial amount of grit and determination. Grit is something that you have to keep at like a monumental task. A prime example would be David and Goliath based in the Bible. David had to have Grit to pursue Goliath and the determination...

The statement in the February 19, 2003 email explaining, “I can design one feature completely and make it work by August," is credible (UOP, 2003, p. 17). After all, the same email explains that programming involves much more than key strokes. It involves planning, testing and quality control (p. 17). In the previous February 19, 2003 email to Chris, Kelly explains how difficult it is for the programming staff to maintain existing services and find time for something new (p. 16). While programming staff was dramatically reduced in the year prior, Kelly’s belief might be partially fallacious. If the new project...
