...Department of Computer Science by ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. C. Edward Chow, Chair ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Terrance E. Boult ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Xiaobo Zhou ----------------------------------------- Date Abstract This paper explores the competing issues of coverage efficiency and power available in wireless sensor networks. Specifically, a shortest distance routing protocol is implemented, and total network system lifetimes are determined using a variety of small percentages of the available system nodes. Using a network simulator developed in Java, wireless sensor nodes are simulated, and power consumption algorithms are included in each node that take into consideration all aspects of power consumption in the operation of the node. Simulating different coverage schemes on the same network system, same initial power sources, and routing protocol, an increase of overall system lifetime of 900% is demonstrated, but also that the network lifetime increase does not increase linearly as the percentage of nodes used in the system is decreased. Acknowledgement I would like to thank Professor C. Edward Chow for his guidance and patience during my thesis work. I would also like to thank my family for their support, patience, and understanding during this labor when I had to be “working on my...

...development refers to the “lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure and transitions” (Parker, 2015). Employee career development is not only vital for the individual’s career but it is also an essential part of business survival strategies (Gololo, 2013). In order to effectively address the question “Career development: Whose responsibility is it?”, this essay will consider the effects of changing business environment on the nature of career development. Research examples, such as Hall’s and Inkson’s articles, are useful in explaining the highly turbulent and complex business environment whilst also differentiating the role each person plays in a modern organisation. The idea of a protean career is essential in understanding whose responsibility one’s career development belongs to. The combination of the changing business environment, as well as the protean career approach to career development, will establish an essential foundation for this essay. The empirical information gathered from a joint research paper conducted by the University of Phoenix in conjunction with EdAssist – “The Story Behind Career Development: Who is responsible?” helps to investigate the current trends within the workplace and how they are evolving. This study investigates managers’ and employees’ perceptions of whose responsibility it is to take control of the individual’s career development. By studying a variety of other well renowned, peer-reviewed academic sources the responsibility of one’s...

...Personal Reflection Paper By: Heather Bennett Course: BSHS/345 Due: 9/7/2015 Instructor: Rina Wallace Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization are two things that everyone will experience in their lifetime. I can personally say that I have experienced both of them many times in my lifetime and still struggle with them to this day. In this paper I am going to explain how both of these can be damaging not only to you but to everyone who is involved. I’m going to talk about an event in my life that I have experienced, ways to stop invidious comparison, strategies that I personally use to avoid vicarious traumatization in my own life, and if those strategies will work to ensure that I will avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker, and what other strategies I could develop that would be helpful to avoid vicarious traumatization. In my lifetime I have compared myself to others so much that it has damaged my confidence, one instance that stands out to me was when I was going into Jr. high school. My family didn’t have a lot of money to buy me those nice clothes that everyone else wearing and I found myself comparing what I wore to what everyone else had. I was so hard on myself I would pretend to be sick just so I didn’t have to go to school. I got so self conscious about it that every time I heard anyone laugh or seen someone whispering I thought it was about me. I was so busy focusing on the fact that everyone had better things then I did...

Samuel Cole In the present global market, firms compete for market share and the demand from consumers using many strategies and systems. There is a significant difference between price competition and non-price competition. “Price competition can involve discounting the price of a product to increase demand (cost-plus, predatory and limit pricing). Non-price competition focuses on other strategies for increasing market share (advertising and sales promotion policies, and collusion and cartels,” (Margetts, 2010). ...Teaching Philosophy for Business Teaching especially in Business, I am always strain to move forward the simple expressing of facts and knowledge or even the training of certain skills. Instead, teachers in a liberal arts environment have the broad responsibility of serving as guide and mentor on an intellectual journey, opening and extending curious minds by exposing them to new thoughts and ideas. As education helps expand the students’ horizon and forces them to critically examine their values, goals, and ideals, they learn to sympathize and empathize with others of different backgrounds. This enables them to come fully into their own as human beings who can share the common secure of humanity with other world citizens as they retain and value their prominent and separate identities. Students can afford the opportunity to confront new ideas and different points of views in classroom, all the while increasing their abilities to discuss and defend their own positions both in discussions and in writing. In my composition class this translates into an interactive, group-oriented classroom that focuses in equal amounts on the three components of critical thinking, reading, and writing. “It is now generally conceded that the art of thinking critically is a major missing link in education today, and that effective communication and problem-solving skills, as well as mastery of content, require critical thinking. It is also generally recognized that the ability to think critically...

...achieving even greater reductions in oil consumption will require changing the way Americans power their transportation system. Some officials advocate the electrification of the passenger vehicle fleet as a path to meeting this goal. The Obama administration has, for example, embraced a goal of having one million electric-powered vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015, while others proposed a medium-term goal where electric vehicles would consist of 20% of the passenger vehicle fleet by 2030—approximately 30 million electric vehicles. The technology itself is not in question—many of the global automobile companies are planning to sell plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and/or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2012. The key question is, will Americans buy them? The answer depends on four additional questions: 1. Is the cost of purchasing and operating an electric vehicle more or less expensive than the cost of a comparable conventional gasoline-powered vehicle? 2. Are the comparative costs likely to change over the next twenty years? 3. Do electric vehicles provide the same attributes as conventional cars, and if not, do the differences matter? 4. Will electric car owners be able to access the electricity needed to power their vehicles? This paper attempts to answer these four questions. There are two basic categories of electric vehicles—electric vehicles (BEVs), which run solely on the electric energy stored in the battery, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)...

...LESSON ONE (1) Evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to the individual and organization Self Managed Learning or SML as its normally called is more about taking responsibility for decisions like; • What to Learn • How to Learn • When to Learn • Where to Learn. The most fundamental questions that stimulate the above mentioned question is "Why Learn", this is where a link between personal development and organizational development could be established. So what does SML do for Individuals and what does it do for Organizations. Benefits of self-managed learning to the individual Starting with the individual, SML creates value for learning among individuals, • self actualisation • Learning brings a constant feeling of development among individuals and that is directly linked to being able to advance in career (job promotions) • increased job satisfaction • help them take on board their weaknesses, and how they can get over them, • it help achieve increased level of self-confidence among participants due to the ability to acquire new skills, • help creates ability to work more effectively with the colleagues. • its a place where individuals could be more open about their issues and achieve a constructive feedback and most importantly • individuals set their targets assessing their own shortcomings. Benefits of self-managed learning to the Organisation What does SML has to offer the...

Chemistry helped me understand the molecular structures while Physics and Mathematics helped me understand the dynamics and statistics that we were provided with. Being an avid reader, has led to the formation of many ideas which I feel can be expressed on gaining more insight. A degree in Biological Sciences will help me reach my dream. Earlier this year, three of my friends and I participated in NTU Science Symposium. We had to write a research paper in any field of science. The four of us love biology and felt that we would be able to express our skills and knowledge through the paper and came up with the topic 'External Factors Affecting Bacterial Growth'. The research paper certainly tested our abilities to work as a team. We had to submit the paper in May and all of us had many other commitments apart from the research paper. Like every group has someone to keep all the interpersonal relations intact, this task was an added responsibility to me. The research paper helped us understand as well as apply many of the already learnt concepts. I realised the importance of understanding and applying the knowledge procured during theory classes. In12th grade, it is...

...Life Span Perspective Paper PSY/375 Shamous Jordan 10/14/2013 Heather Harrison, Ph.D. Historically, the philosophy of human development has stemmed from the Biblical understanding of original sin, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s intimations of innate goodness, and John Locke’s postulation that we are born with a psychological blank slate (Boyd & Bee, 2006). However, in the 19th century the study of human development was given legs to its already well-defined frame in the form of the theory of evolution, as put forth by Charles Darwin. With the idea of evolutionary stages in place, G. Stanley Hall of Clark University was able to formulate his theory of norms, which hypothesize that human development can be segregated into identifiable phases, and Arnold Gesell was able to suggest his theory of maturation, which was largely dependent on genetic predisposition. From these beginnings the lifespan development perspective of human psychology has been largely concerned with the physiological, psychological, cultural, genetic, and environmental context of individual human development from conception to old age (Baltes & Staudinger, 1999; Boyd & Bee, 2006). Moreover, the lifespan perspective (LSP) of development can be put into context through the models of both human development domains and developmental periods, the major characteristics of LSP, and the contemporary concerns about LSP. LSP is concerned with three separate, but principally overlapping, domains of human...

...Health Care Research In looking at the definition of research, it is pretty much defined the same no matter what resource you are looking at. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition (2003) defines research as: 1) careful or diligent search; 2) studious inquiry or examination; investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws; 3) the collecting of information about a particular subject. Research may mean different things to different people but research to me means to participate in research and to search for information on a subject or a particular problem. Research is an important part of Ashford Academics. “Health care organizations have become extremely complex hence health care management has also taken on a complexity of its own. Health care managers must therefore be very versatile in management skills while being very knowledgeable in health care issues. One cannot expect to be fully prepared for a lifetime career of health care management by an academic program alone. Further growth and professional development are demanded in a highly dynamic environment such as health care” (Isaac, 1995). As a leader in health care, research is important because either it justifies a point being made or it allows you to interpret...
