...Extraction of light trapped in special structured luminescent thin films Group discussion 3rd May 2014 Group members: Barbara Brudieu, Lucie Devys, Prof. Thierry Gacoin, and Gu Rong I. INTRODUCTION After almost two months’ internship, with a great help of Barbara and Lucie, I eventually manage to synthesize the DBR and all the solutions needed. Although some techniques still remain to be ameliorated and their theoretical meanings are also left to figure out, to have a small brainstorming at this moment is quite timely I suppose. It just happens to be the mid-point of combining Barbara’s DBR mirror with Lucie’s photonic crystal coupling system. By now, we’ve got three different DBRs (375nm, 620nm, 850nm and the gradient will be fabricated after this meeting) and each mirror has two types: 6 & 8 layers. Several optical measurements (Carry 50) and curves of calibration (TiO2-Eu(TTA)3 layer thickness) will be showed as flowing which are open for discussion. Hope this meeting will assess the work finished so far and give a clear direction for the further steps. II. DBRs The optical measurement of these mirrors is operated on Carry 50 and the corresponding simulation is carried out on Matlab (Reticolo). a. b. c. Figures a, b, c are DBRs of wavelengths 375nm, 620nm and 850nm. Curves left are optical measurement of transmission by Carry 50, curves right are the simulation associated. The discrepancies between the optical...

...Not only does the sun provides heat, light and energy, which are essential for life on Earth, sunlight is a form of energy composed of electromagnetic radiation, including visible and ultraviolet light. Light travels in waves. Visible light (with varying colors from red to violet) has wavelengths of about 760-400 nm. (1 nanometer = 1〖 × 10〗^(-9) m.) In contrast, UV waves are shorter, which are less than 400 nm. Ultraviolet light is also categorized as: UV-A (400-320 nm), UV-B (320-290 nm), and UV-C (290-180 nm). Light travels in waves but in the form of particles called photons. Short wavelengths of light generate more energy because of the lack of distance that photons have to travel to, to collide with each other; and since ultraviolet light waves are shorter than any of visible light, it is more energetic (Ultraviolet Radiation). As a result of its high energy, UV light can disrupt chemical bonds that make up the cells of living organisms, especially chemicals in DNA. DNA, which carries information for growth and function, is conventionally damaged by the daily exposure to UV light. DNA-coded proteins in our cell control cell growth and capacity. UV light disruption to DNA can cause a cell to become cancerous or to...

... 2/3/16 When one thinks of the energy used on a regular basis across the United States, one would not necessarily think simple things such as turning off lights or turning down the heat would make any real difference. At least that is what I thought as a child, until my parents started always asking me to turn off the lights in rooms I was not in, or telling me not to take such long showers, and even telling me to throw on a sweatshirt if I was cold, instead of turning up the heat. It was through antics such as these that my parents tried their best to not only conserve money, (the opportunity cost of putting in a sweatshirt in hopes of putting more money back in their pockets was for sure a tradeoff they have always been seemingly willing to make), but also energy in general. Although I was not alive in 1970 when President Jimmy Carter proposed the nation saving energy together by turning down the heat, I can imagine that most likely part of the reason that my parents always seemed to be telling me to conserve energy was in part due to the fact that they were alive during that time. Now this interesting idea of no holiday lights is something that would...

...Cesar Heyaime EGL-102 09/15/14 Prof. M. Prinz A Light in the dark The poem "Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy's Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota," by the author James Wright, expresses the value of a person's life. The author shows us the importance of life by using metaphors. The rich descriptions given by the character makes the metaphors relate between them, and express how he feels about how he has been living his life. At the beginning of the poem the reader is placed into the character’s mind. He appears to be enjoying everything that is around him. The way he describes it is what’s interesting. Everything seems to have a sense of darkness. “I see the bronze butterfly, asleep on the black trunk, blowing like a leaf in green shadow”. Everything there has a darker meaning, it feels like the character is trying to find beauty in something that has already lost it but also in these same lines he is showing the passing of time. "To my right, In a field of sunlight between two pines, The droppings of last year's horses, Blaze up into golden stones." These lines are very meaningful to the poem. The character is giving the reader more of these metaphors that relates with something that is missing, something that once was but is now lost. When the author refers to the droppings of last year’s horses blazing up into golden stones he is giving a ray of light into all this darkness. The droppings weren’t there but the character let’s the reader know that it was something...

These combine to create an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain. As the injured areas return to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved. Cellular Effects of Laser Therapy: During laser treatment, the infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level and metabolic activity increases in the cell. This improves the transportation of nutrients across the cell membrane which initiates the production of cellular energy (ATP) thus leading to many benefits increasing cellular function and health. ...Introduction to Nursing Research Introduction The article relationship between call light use and response time and inpatient falls in acute care settings purpose was to determine if faster response time to call light use was effective in reducing the amount of patient falls by allowing more faster response time as reported by Huey-Ming Tzeng and Change-Yi Yin (2009. Hospital inpatient falls consistently comprise the largest single category of reported accidental falls (Joint Commission 2005). Patients may fall unintentionally while going to the bathroom, while on pain medication, or while trying to get off their beds. Call lights are used by patients when needing go to the bathroom, needing assistance getting off their bed, or while walking on pain medication. When a nurse is not available in time, the patient will attempt to perform these acts alone, therefore, increasing their risk of falling. Background The purpose of the study is to determine whether the call light use rate and the average call light response time contribute to the fall and injurious fall rates in acute care settings (Huey-Ming Tzeng and Change-Yi Yin, 2009). Patients and their family members will utilize the call lights when they have a need that has not been met yet. Once the call lights is utilized, the response time is the amount of time it takes for the nurse to respond the patient or patients family members need. This study took place in a Michigan community hospital and data was...

...Red Light Cameras Proposition Paper Violeta Gonzalez Introduction Red light cameras have been created to decrease car accidents and increase the safety at intersections. The red light cameras have increased so it can be easy to enforce citizens to not pass a red light at intersections. More than 400 cities in United States have enforced red light cameras. But yet there have been disadvantages and advantages toward red light cameras. Red Light Cameras A red light camera is a camera that photographs a vehicle when it runs a red light an intersection. It has been in use since 1986. It becomes active once the signal light turns red. Photographs are taken from front and rear of the vehicle. Once the camera captures a photograph of a person passing a red light a citation is sent home through mail to the registered owner of the vehicle. Disadvantages of having red light cameras are increasing rear-end accidents, ticket recipients are not notified, driver not being identified and invasion of privacy. Rear-accidents are being increased because it makes the driver in the front hit the brake once the light is yellow and the car behind it has not enough time to brake. Most drivers are scared to run a red light and don’t want to get a ticket. Another reason is that recipients aren’t being notified as soon as possible. The government sends the ticket as first class. They assume that the driver gets it. The case may be that the driver never got it or the government assumes that...

...When light is blocked, shadows appear in the place where the light cannot get to. Shadows cast off random everyday objects, buildings and the human form. We as humans with opaque bodies are joined by our shadows almost daily, but without sufficient light our shadows disappear. The Third Man creates a new standard and category of mise en scène, by having shadows drive the plot forward. The shadows created could be compared on the same level as the actors within the movie and the light as the director. In The Third Man the streets of Vienna Austria are very shadowy and dark, “And the bizarre lighting makes the city into an expressionist nightmare.”(Ebert, Par.5). Darkness reflects Vienna’s post war life era. The manipulation of light usually goes unnoticed in movies but in The Third Man you would have to be blind to not notice....

...“Star Light, Star Bright, Where are you now?” As I was reading the article, I was surprised to know that there was such thing as “light pollution”. It was rare for me to hear this kind of pollution. The cause of this kind of pollution is too much light directed toward the sky. I even wonder at times when I look up unto the skies and see no stars at all. I didn’t realize that this was because of light pollution. It was because of this article that I’ve learned a lot about light pollution. The presence of light pollution makes it impossible for us to see the stars, because there are way too many artificial lights that brighten up the night. Few of the causes of light pollution are: bright lights from homes and buildings, light from vehicles, street light that have a shape of a cylinder, and billboards lit form the bottom. Starless nights may not be a big problem for us, ordinary people, but for astronomers who study the heavenly bodies, this is already a huge problem. Even with the use of telescopes, the glare of the light may still affect their observations which results into inaccurate results. Astronomers are not the only ones affected by this pollution. Even the nocturnal animals are affected too. Light pollution could ruin their natural habitat and overall behavior. There are ways to reduce the effect of light pollution, and this is through the use of: Light with timers, Motion-sensor lighting, and Full...

...Evelyn Solano English 102 22 March 2012 Problem Solved: Increase Yellow Light Timings The dreaded red light photo enforced tickets have caused a huge controversy not only in Chicago, but in all parts of the United States. Although more than 15 states and 21 cities have banned the use of red light cameras, Chicago doesn’t seem like it will be one to budge. The first red light camera in Chicago was placed in 2003 along with the impression that these photo enforced cameras will benefit all on the road including pedestrians and bicyclists. Red light cameras were introduced to the people as a form of protection to help ensure driver safety and reduce red light running. Since the first camera was installed, there has been a rapid spread all across Chicago to where there are even two cameras at one intersection. Based on the studies reported, there is, however, strong evidence that suggests that red light cameras are less effective than the high hopes that were placed at their inception. In this debate, I’m not asking to take down red light cameras because some people believe they are to create revenue, nor am I saying the cameras are worthwhile. The priority is to get them to work in the way they were intended to be used for not just for revenue as it has now become. Changes in the engineering aspect to create a better flow would do the best for the city of Chicago. A great amount of technology, contracting, design, and implementation goes into these traffic...

...The Lost Light: The Mystery of the Missing Cape Hatteras Fresnel Lens: A Civil War History of Extinguished Southern Sentinels and Hidden Lighthouse Lenses written by Kevin Duffus is a chronicle of his search for the lens. Kevin Duffus is a North Carolina historian and author of four books. He, as a teenager, became intrigued by the mystery of the missing light. But, Duffus says that, as time went by and other opportunities took precedence, “Those words eventually became a vague and distant image, settled in the back of [his] mind (2).” Fortunately, this was not the case for long, as time and time again Duffus found himself in situations where he was reminded of the mystery. Finally, Duffus set out to find the answer to this question himself....

...Pedant Lights in India are becoming the hot new trend in the home décor industry. They have a certain Victorian charm to them that appeals to the taste of anybody who favors classic designs. They can lighten and brighten up any area in an instant in the most enigmatic way. In fact, they can be specifically used to highlight certain areas to add appeal to the home décor. Any light fixture that is mounted to the ceiling and hangs down from the ceiling on a rod or chain(s) can be typically categorized as a pendant light. Since it is suspended like a pendant on a necklace, its rightly called as a pendant light. Pendant Lights are every interior designers go-to idea to add class and light to a space. ...description of the highway not only represents people carelessly driving fast but also represents how people speed through life. We can all relate with this comparison since we all have been on the highway and we all have found ourselves daydreaming about an event coming, whether it is a few days away or even a few years. It is natural for people to look so forward to something coming in the future that is causes to not recognized and appreciate what is happening in the present. He even goes to compare our lives as a “race” that we are afraid to finish in last in. Keith says he realized how fast we are moving though life when he was sitting on his roof “watching the cars go by”. He then goes on the compare our lives to a “river of neon lights” once again comparing it to cars speeding on the road. He means by all this that sometime the only way we can realize how fast we are moving through life is just by sitting back and watching everyone else carelessly move through time. He ends this stanza by saying “But somewhere in the rush I felt we’re losing ourselves”. The song “Days Go By” could also be interpreted to something else other that life itself, but also...

...Replacement of Non-working Street Lights The repair or replacement of non-working street lights in several areas of the city has caused hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility. The city has decided to make the repair and replacement of these lights a priority. Identifying the problem: Although the city has already stated that nonworking street lights has the culprit to the problem the real problem is low visibility. At what level of light output is conditions considered acceptable; for instance is a 1000 watt bulb considered adequate for 500 feet of road? Is this acceptable for all roads? Is a residential area roads need different lighting requirements as a highway or what about historic areas that want to maintain a time period look and feel through the area? For this exercise we say that historic areas will not accrue changes under this program, residential areas need a 500 wattage bulb every 1000 feet, and highways need a 1000 watt bulb every 500 feet. Understanding the problem Low visibility: Are current street lights working? If so, are the lights adequate to meet acceptable levels? If not, how far are the lights poles positioned apart? And what wattage of bulbs is being used? Do these meet the minimum standards set above? Identifying Alternate solutions: If lighting is not meeting acceptable levels should more lights be added or should existing lights be replaced due to the inability of the current lights to provide adequate amount of light. Selecting the best solution:...
