Linked Worksheets and Workbooks

Worksheets and workbooks have long been the backbone to many organizations and companies. They are used for just about all a business’s record keeping, from tracking sales to the financial accounting. I reviewed a couple of articles and I found one that emphasized the need for proper workbooks and worksheets. This article goes in detail on how a company by the name of Jaguar Mining took its workbooks and consolidated them to fit the business needs. Jaguar Mining was having trouble because even though it was a small company it was trying to manage three separate workbooks, composed of over 100 linked spreadsheets, containing the financial and operational data for the mining and headquarters locations. That was a lot of work for such a minor company. Each sheet represented different functions for each mine and plant, including operating, capital, and cost data, as well as the monthly financial results. Well this was an impossible task at a company that only had ten people at the company headquarters. The company found that Excel just was not going to work for them. What it did next was switch to a company called Adaptive Planning (now called Adaptive Insight). It still has workbooks and worksheets but now the information that is needed is merged to suit the company’s needs. Jaguar Mining still has its workbooks and worksheets but now can input the data in a form that can be easier to review and understand. In my conclusion I will just state that without a well-defined plan on managing workbooks and worksheets the company Jaguar Mining would have continued having problems. This is why these highly effective workbooks and workspaces are a requirement for companies.

The item being copied is called the object. For example, you could copy an Excel worksheet (the object) that is located in an Excel workbook (the source document) to a Word document (the destination document). That is, an object can be copied from a source document to a destination document. You can use one of three techniques to copy objects from one program to another: copy and paste, embed, or link. * Copy and paste. When you copy an object and then paste it, the object becomes part of the destination document. You edit a pasted object using editing features of the destination program. For example, when you select an Excel worksheet in an Excel workbook, click the Copy button on Excel’s Home tab, and then click the Paste button on Word’s Home tab, each row in the Excel Worksheet become a separate paragraph in the Word document and each column in separated by a tab character. * Embed. When you embed an object, like a pasted object, it becomes part of the destination...

...Monte Carlo Simulation Using RiskSim 9 9.1 RISKSIM OVERVIEW RiskSim is a Monte Carlo Simulation add-in for Microsoft Excel (Excel 97 and later versions) for Windows and Macintosh. RiskSim provides random number generator functions as inputs for your model, automates Monte Carlo simulation, and creates charts. Your spreadsheet model may include various uncontrollable uncertainties as input assumptions (e.g., demand for a new product, uncertain variable cost of production, competitor reaction), and you can use simulation to determine the uncertainty associated with the model's output (e.g., annual profit). RiskSim automates the simulation by trying hundreds of what-ifs consistent with your assessment of the uncertainties. To use RiskSim, you (1) create a spreadsheet model (2) optionally use SensIt to identify critical inputs (3) enter one of RiskSim's twelve random number generator functions in each input cell of your model (4) choose Tools | Risk Simulation from Excel's menu (5) specify the model output cell and the number of what-if trials (6) interpret RiskSim's histogram and cumulative distribution charts. RiskSim facilitates Monte Carlo simulation by providing: Twelve random number generator functions Ability to set the seed for random number generation Automatic repeated sampling for simulation Frequency distribution of simulation results Histogram and cumulative distribution charts All of RiskSim’s functionality,...
