...requirement? That is the question on the table now, which may soon move to the courts, if not resolved soon. Township High School District 211 has 30 days to reach a solution concerning the decision to force a transgender student to change behind a curtain in the girl’s locker room. The transgender student in question plays on a girls’ sports team, is called “she” by school staff and is referred to by a female name. The district, citing privacy concerns, had required her to change clothes and shower separately (Smith and Davey). The state school board is not in agreement with the district’s decision saying the district is breaking the law by not allowing a female student to use the girls’ locker room. The district superintendent insists however,...

...Assignment 2 Student Freedoms Annette Lester Professor, Dr. Sonya S Shepherd Education and The Law July 29, 2012 Your Belongings Can Be Searched, But Not Arbitrarily When a student is under school supervision it is not required for school officials to obtain a search warrant before searching a student and no police have to be involve either for the search or seizure of a student or property. When safety is involve of the student or personnel it is the duty of the school to search a student. A warrant may protect the student and staff but as long as the school officials conduct themselves in a manner viewed reasonable, they don’t have to prove probably causes before searching a student. Searches can be justified if an official prove reasonable suspicion with evidence that the student was in violation of the law or school rules. Reasonableness is a function of whether a search was initially justified, and whether the search was related to the circumstances that called for the search in the first place. A search is not considered reasonable if it is overly intrusive with respect to a student’s age, sex and rules the student has been suspected of violating. The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution states, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants, shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing...

...Surveillance Surveillance in Schools: Safety vs. Personal Privacy A project created by Kathy Davis, John Kelsey, Dia Langellier, Misty Mapes, and Jeff Rosendahl Project Home Security Cameras Metal Detectors Locker Searches Internet Tracking “Surveillance…n. close observation, esp. of a suspected person” [emphasis added] --Reader’s Digest Oxford Complete Wordfinder, 1996 In 1995, “The total number of crimes committed per year in or near the 85,000 U.S. public schools has been estimated at around 3 million” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). Our educational system is evolving all the time, and one factor that is constantly changing is the aggressiveness within our schools. In 1940, a survey of teachers revealed that the biggest behavioral problems they had from students were “talking out of turn, chewing gum, making noise, running in the halls, cutting in line, [violating] the dress code, [and] littering” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). In 1990, the toprated problems were “drug abuse, alcohol abuse, pregnancy, suicide, rape, robbery, [and] assault” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). In 1940, we had little need for surveillance beyond a teacher’s observation and intervention. Today, however, we live in a much more diverse society with troubled youth and adults who have easy access to weapons, drugs, pornography, etc., which have enabled students and staff to bring their violent and/or inappropriate tendencies into the naïve schools. What worked in 1940 (teacher-student confrontation) is not as realistic...

As the dean of students this past spring, this topic came up multiple times because of suspicions or reports from parents and students of drug use. We arranged for the K-9 unit at our school two different times this past spring. One time was for a search of bags that belonged to students who were packed and ready to go on an overnight trip with our Vo-ag student group. There were rumors and suspicions that drugs were coming with the students in their bags, so to make sure it did not the K-9 unit came in to search...

...on has natural limits that the human population is radically exceeding. Throughout my life I have experienced my town that I grew up in becoming overpopulated also known as Belton, Texas. In my high school there was about 2600 kids my senior year. Every year that number got extraordinarily bigger. Our hallways were too crowded. It was like trying to walk through the crowd in a concert. Therefore it was impossible. They tried to fix this problem by making our main hallway a one way hallway. However, that just caused the other hallways in our school to be more crowded than usual. I would always be late to class due to the fact that you couldn’t get through the hallways. The fastest way to get to class was to walk around the building outside. Also the lockers were a big concern. My high school only had 1500 lockers compared to the 2600 students that they needed to supply them for. It was basically first come first serve however if you were a freshman or a sophomore you were not going to get a locker because the juniors and seniors got to keep their locker from their sophomore or junior year. So in all reality it was a unfair process and students were complaining to the school but there was nothing my high school could do because it had no way of expanding. Secondly, my school cafeteria never had enough food to supply to the students. They didn’t have enough freezer room to store enough food to feed 2600 students. My experience with shortage of food was that I had D lunch, meaning...

...It’s 8:05 am; the late bell has rung signaling to all that students should be seated in class and ready to learn. Students can be seen slamming their lockers and sprinting to their next class with fear of a tardy slip for being late. But lingering in the hallways is an imaginary disease embedded only in the senior class. The symptoms are well recognized by the faculty; tardiness, little to no work completed in class, turning in assignments late, and an overall lethargic attitude rapidly spread from student to student as the end of the school year nears. Unfortunately, the repercussions of their actions are not as innocent as some seniors like to believe. Senioritis has short-term as well as long-term damage on their academic attainment such as loss of college acceptance, difficulties with college level classes, lack of desire to further education and a continued apathetic attitude towards the end of any undertaking. To understand why senioritis is so destructive to a senior’s future, it should first be identified. Senioritis is defined as an imaginary syndrome attributed to students nearing the end of high school and college, whose symptoms include laziness, procrastination and apathy toward schoolwork. Towards the end of the senior year of high school, many seniors have already been accepted into colleges, have plans to study a certain area or will already have jobs lined up for them when they graduate high school. Many are so focused on the future that the present is no longer...

...To be an effective special needs assistant certain qualities and skills are required – as outlined below: Chapter 12 and Chapeter 15 “Communication skills (relating to children, giving positive feedback, etc.) Interpersonal skills (e.g. working effectively with co-workers and supervisor) Practical skills (e.g. assisting with clothing, feeding and hygiene, assigning with the preparation of the classroom, assisting with the organisation of the children at assembly, etc.” (1) Caring, friendly and approachable Special needs children totally rely on their SNA for support and guidance in the school environment. Therefore I believe that being caring, friendly and approachable is a vital quality to have in order to allay any fears the child may have. I know that my daughter responds much better to a person who smiles, uses an upbeat tone and has a gentle manner than she does to someone who is impatient, unfriendly and uses loud commands. It is also important to be attentive, listen and watch carefully to what the child is trying to communicate to you. (2) Patient In my...

...The Harmony Project, as described by Locker, is a music program that serves low-income children in Los Angeles. According to The Harmony Project’s website, since 2008, 93 percent of Harmony Project seniors have gone on to college, despite their neighborhood having a dropout rate of about 50 percent (Locker). These students in this program are from poverty stricken areas, where most students do not succeed and drop out of school. There is a clear link to their music education and their success compared with other students in similar surroundings. There have also been many studies which prove that music education can help to increase students’ IQs. Hammond discusses a study where Jessica Grahn, a cognitive scientist at Western University, claimed that “she discovered a year of piano lessons, combined with regular practice can increase IQ by as much as three points” (Hammond). Another study, described by Brown, by E. Glenn Schellenberg at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, found “a small increase in the IQs of six-year-olds who were given weekly voice and piano lessons” (Brown). Not only has it been proved that music education can help raise one’s base IQ, but it is proven that students who receive music education do better overall in school. A study published in 2007 by Christopher Johnson, professor of music education and therapy at the University of Kansas, discovered that students in elementary schools with strong music education programs scored 22 percent...

..."High school football accounts for 47% of all sport related concussions" ("Sports," 2013). High school athletes still have developing brains. Any injury to their brain can cause severe changes in development and cognitive ability. When thinking about sports, there are many that require more impacts than football. Take ice hockey for example. The athletes get pounded into the walls and fall down easier, but football players still acquire almost half of all concussion, and the majority of those concussions happen in practice. Football is one of the most watched sports in America, but is also causes a lot of injuries. Many people think this has to do with the football helmet, made in order to protect the head and brain of a player. However, stricter...

...Communication Trends I will be discussing different business communication trends and the role that business communication plays in my everyday life. I will also explain how it helps me manage my daily work activities and what trends I have encountered in my current or previous workplaces. Even with continuing advancements in technology, it is very important for an individual to encompass effective communication skills. In the business world individuals must be able communicate with their peers both verbally and nonverbally. Despite some claims that may dispute its importance, a person’s success relies heavily on his or her ability to hold a conversation. “Good communication is worth every minute it takes and every penny it costs” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, p. 9). People communicate for one reason or another daily. There are many forms of communication that are both verbal and nonverbal. Verbal communication is anything that uses words. This form of communication can take place; face-to-face, over the phone, at informal meetings, during presentations, e-mail messages, letters, memos, reports, blogs, text messages, and web sites. Nonverbal communication, on the other hand, does not use words. One aspect I learned early in my career search was the advantage to speaking properly during interviews. Employers not only look at a person’s employment history but also at how they conduct him or herself during an interview. Employers do not want to hire someone that is not able...
