Political, Social and Economic Impacts of London Olympics

...attracting the attention of a worldwide audience and to produce important impacts on the country or region that hosts them. After hosting the Olympics two times in 1908 and 1948, London will beat the records this year by being the first country holding three Olympic Games and, in the same way as the previous Games, the 2012 Olympics are going to have major impacts on the country on several industries (Australian Olympic Committee, 2009). This essay will mainly discuss the political, social and economic long-term impacts that hosting the 2012 Olympic Games will have on the city of London in relation to the Events Industry. This first part of the essay will discuss the political impacts of the Olympics on the Events Industry. Over time, the Olympic Games have become “irreparably intertwined with politics” and have generated a good political image on the hosting country as they served as a tool of global publicity. Unfortunately, this hasn’t always been a positive thing as it often led to bribery and corruption. For example, in 1936 the Nazi Party used the Games to promote German superiority. This is why the International Olympics Committee (IOC) former president Avery Brundage toughly attempted to “separate sports from politics”, but regrettably, “it seems that countries will aim to use their teams as a tool, rather than an example of what they can achieve.” (Imperial College Olympics Report, 2011) Protests, terrorism and boycotts are three other concerns when it comes...

Domestic Violence

...Statistics about domestic violence Incidence and prevalence of domestic violence: General    There are no reliable national data on the general incidence of domestic violence in the UK1. In 2011/12, 7.3% women (1.2 million) and 5% men (800,000) report having experienced domestic abuse2. 31% women and 18% men have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16 years. This amounts to 5 million women and 2.9 million men3. Domestic violence has repeatedly been identified as a major factor leading to death in or related to pregnancy and childbirth: see below. In 2011/12, the police reported nearly 800,000 incidents of domestic violence4. Domestic violence accounts for 10% of emergency calls5. Domestic violence has consistently accounted for between 16% and one quarter of all recorded violent crime6. There has been a 65% increase in number of domestic violence prosecutions between 2005/6 and 2010/11 and a corresponding 99% increase in number of defendents convicted7.   Despite this, domestic violence conviction rates in the five years to 2011 stood at just 6.5% of incidents reported to police – though a much higher proportion of around 70% of those charged8. Women are much more likely than men to be the victim of multiple incidents of abuse, of different types of domestic abuse (partner abuse, family abuse, sexual assault and stalking) and in particular of sexual violence9.        Hester, 2008. Co2 Effects and Causes

...CO2 effects on the climate. A new report from Imperial College London looks at what measures are required to reduce CO2 emissions and limit the extent of man-made climate change. Human activities like shipping, construction and industry are increasing the concentration of CO2 entering the atmosphere, which research has overwhelmingly shown is heating the planet and changing our climate. Many studies, including those by the International Energy Agency, suggest that global CO2 emissions are set to pass 50 Giga-tonnes per year by 2050 if there is no further action by governments to reduce them over the coming years. Now researchers at Imperial have considered what technologies and interventions are required to limit these global CO2 emissions from human activity to 15 Giga-tonnes per year by 2050, a level that many studies show could help to limit global warming to around two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Their report concludes that reaching this target will cost $2 trillion per year by 2050, which is about one per cent of the world's GDP in 2050, and considerably less than this if fossil fuel prices increase with time. – Professor Nilay Shah Report author It will require a broad range of low-carbon technologies to be implemented across several sectors of the economy – power, industry, buildings and transport. Report author, Professor Nilay Shah from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial said: "A fundamental...

Immigration Uk

...Melad Safi from London School of Economics and Political Science. The topic of this speech of mine is, “is immigration good for Britain?” I will address four main areas, where immigration is believed to have an impact. Those areas are as follows economic, social, cultural and political. However before we continue, I will give you a short introduction to immigration in Britain. Since the European Union decided to include several East European countries, the level of immigration has soared in Britain. 150.000 Rumanians are believed to live in London alone, and the net immigration to Britain between 1991-2012 was more than three million.1 The massive level of immigrants has left a negative opinion about immigrants. According to surveys, 60% believed that immigrants did more harm than good, and 77% believed that a dramatic reduction in immigration would benefit the economy.2 The government of the UK has been criticised for not doing their job well enough. The public opinion is that immigration is a burden to public service and the country but that they may still be important for some parts of the national economy. Immigrants are believed important in order to take jobs that native British people do not want. According to new researches, the public opinion is mostly wrong. OECD presented a report back in 2011 stating that immigration was neither beneficial nor harming for national economies. The Offices for National Statistics presented another report, concluding that...

Germany

...from solved debt crisis are making analysts more skeptical about the future. How companies view the situation is more important though. This will be revealed by the Ifo business climate on Friday, which is also set to fall again. Financial analysts give an increasingly negative assessment of the outlook for the German economy. The ZEW index for the economic expectations in Germany dropped again in October. At -48.3, it came in slightly below expectations (Commerzbank forecast and consensus: -45.0). Well over half of the analysts surveyed meanwhile believe that the economic situation in Germany will deteriorate in the next six months. That said, Germany is the only country for which the index for the current situation is still clearly in positive territory, at 38.4. For the euro zone and the other surveyed countries, the figure is already in deep negative territory. These figures do not really bring much news; the fact that analysts have reduced their growth estimates again for next year – meaning they assess the outlook less favourably – is already in the newspapers. Furthermore, a look at the markets shows that the sovereign debt crisis is causing unrest on the financial markets (and therefore among the analysts working in this sector). What is more surprising is that 8% of those asked still anticipate an improvement in the economic situation. Although the ZEW has been quite a reliable leading indicator in the past, it is not possible to defer from it just how sharply the economy...

Sports Events Industry

...Sport Events Industry Individual Report Words: 2822 Special events have always been part of human history. Anthropologists have traced human civilization for tens of thousands of years, and at the heart of their observations are the ‘special events’ that typify and explain tribal behavior of that time and place. At this point, there is no question that special events have taken on all aspects of an “industry” in that their organization and management are the underlying support for marking the local and domestic details of our lives. Events are not restricted to festive celebrations but can include a variety of gatherings, serious or happy, and religious or cultural, including meetings and conferences, expositions and trade shows, private and public special events, art entertainment and sport events, media or corporate events, and events of various sizes.
