...Research Method (Sarah) Introduction The research method is outlined by an alternative study of the plan. This study will look at three main aspects: the technical specifications of the subject matter, the personal account, and the literary interpretation. The architectural plan is traditionally represented without the human figure, or as Robin Evans has pointed out, drawn as “amoebic” figures. Architectural drawings are often studied with a technical slant, although architecture has long been considered as “social artifact”1 . Thus literature, accompanied by photographic illustrations, is emergent as a device to test architectural apparatus, particularly in the domestic realm where aspects of dwelling and occupancy are not as closely recorded in formal documents as its physical history (e.g. building completion, demolition). This enables us to investigate the relationship between the building plan and its occupants, to understand the architecture as a dwelling. Technical specifications The Pearl Bank Apartments, built in 1972, was built to offer a transcendent mode of living that differentiated the uppermiddle class. The book famously identified a “problem that has no name”: American women’s confinement to a separate and unequal domestic sphere. One factor contributing to women’s unequal status was their absence from leadership positions. Another aspect of the problem was the lack of cultural consensus that this absence was itself part of the problem, and a matter of social concern. Over the last several decades, we have named that leadership problem and created a cottage industry to address it. Women’s underrepresentation in positions of power generates an increasing array of committees, commissions, consultants, centers, conferences, and commentary such as the essays that follow. Yet while we have made considerable progress in understanding the problem, we remain a dispiriting distance from solving it. I. The Underrepresentation of Women in Leadership Roles The facts are frustratingly familiar. Keeling Manchester Business School, Manchester, UK Abstract Purpose – Previous research has focused on how trustworthiness can be evoked by the physical design of on-screen characters (OSCs) within the e-commerce interface. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not the OSCs representation, along with user differences, influence, how likeable, appropriate and trustworthy they are. Design/methodology/approach – A web site was created for a simulated online bookseller and 183 people from various countries participated in the experiments. OSC representations were tested under four conditions in the main experiment: facial appearance (human-like vs cartoon-like) and gender (male vs female). Findings – The results suggest that the human-like characters are more likeable, appropriate and trustworthy in general terms. However, when perceived capabilities of OSCs are measured, a mismatch can occur between expectations and capabilities of the human-like OSCs. In fact, cartoon-like OSCs, especially female, had more positive effects on the web site interface. Research limitations/implications – This study was limited to simulations of on-screen scenarios.
