Macbeth’s feelings

The witches of dangerous things, which Macbeth is indeed thinking, killing the king is the only way for him to become king, he thinks it but doesn’t want to do it. He doubts his own thoughts but he is also confused as it is as if the witches can read his mind, he has fear of his own thoughts and how he could think of such things. Macbeth becomes exited by the witches words, and know he knows he is Thane of Cawdor he knows the witches tell the truth and can be confident in the fact that he will be king, but that means he has to kill the king and he will, but he doesn’t want to. Macbeth is a vulnerable person and the witches got to him at the right time, he is full of glory from the battle. This also shows that he is brave and confident, as he was very good at killing and he didn’t care about it, he just did it without thinking, it was his job.
The excuses show that he does still really want to be king, he is happy with being famous but know he wants the crown; he is jealous and is confident that he can kill the king because he needs the crown and he will please his wife. He submits to Lady Macbeth showing how even though he had some doubts about it, the want and need outweighed the doubt and he in fact would get the crown and could kill the king he just needed the persuasion and for his wife to tell him that it is the right thing to do. He then takes over the planning himself and he loses his fear and doubt for a while.
He shows fear and shock after the murder he is edgy and tense, he is fearful of what he has done and shocked by it too, he can’t believe that he has killed the king, he also shows fear for if he is caught and what will happen to him if he does get caught. He shows guilt and regret for killing Duncan, he always had doubts except for one short period of time and he still has it now, he feels that he shouldn’t have killed Duncan and that it was wrong for him to do, that he didn’t need to do it and he is sorry for killing him too. He shows threat, menace, power mad and control mad, he is enjoying the shock and sadness he has created from the loss of Duncan and he has dark meanings to all of his words, he becomes a tyrant.
After the murder of Banquo, Macbeth is sick with worry and guilt, he is feeling guilt as Banquo was his best friend and Macbeth ordered for him to be assassinated, Fleance has escaped which worries Macbeth, he is also worried for if he gets caught. He stops communicating with Lady Macbeth and is acting secretly; he starts to exclude her from decisions putting more strain and pressure on him and their relationship. He wants everyone to feel at ease at the banquet but when everything goes wrong he wants them all to calm down and he is worried that he may give things away.
He is terrified of the ghost and cowers away from it, he does not understand the reappearance of Banquo and thinks why he is there if he is already dead. He challenges the ghost and overcomes his feelings of terror and guilt. Her gives up trying to control things and decides to go back to the witches showing how his life will end tragically.
Macbeth becomes weary when Lady Macbeth dies, he does not mourn but he is very quiet, subdued and thoughtful, he thinks that someone might be out to get him. His power and motivation seems to disappear after his wife’s death as if there is no point in trying to hold on to the kingship and cannot understand why he ever wanted it in the first place. He realizes this is the end and that his own death is near, the witches have told him he will not die but he knows that he will, he doesn’t bother about it though, he just accepts it, he does not get upset and he does not prevent it he just shakes it off.
Overall throughout the play he is very fearful and doubtful, he is very sane but he is also very confident, he never goes mad and he feels guilt and worry and doubt like anyone would and not like someone who was not sane. He is a brave man and a noble man but this is not enough to save him as he is too gullible and this is what kills him.

Change in Relationship

...between Macbeth & Lady Macbeth In the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth shows us that she is supportive to Macbeth. When deliberating the plans surrounding King Duncan's murder she says to Macbeth 'Leave all the rest to me'. Lady Macbeth also regards her husband as ‘too full o'th'milk of human kindness'. She is claiming that her husband is very kind and a worthy gentleman. Macbeth uses affectionate words to Lady Macbeth at the beginning of the play, 'my dearest love'. These statements show that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth dote on each other at the beginning of the play, although this does change as the play progresses. Lady Macbeth knows that her husband's kindness makes him weak and susceptible to guilt that could prevent the murder of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth begins to manipulate Macbeth and challenges his feelings of guilt and pity for King Duncan and replaces them with malicious and spiteful feelings: 'look like th'innocent flower, but be the serpent under't’. Lady Macbeth now instructs Macbeth on how he should act, encouraging him to be deceitful to King Duncan, his loyal and trusting leader. Macbeth becomes so absorbed in his mixed feelings about the murder that he withdraws from the loving relationship that he had with Lady Macbeth in the beginning of the play. 'First, I am his Kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself’. This quote from act 1 scene 7 shows how Macbeth is in...

How Is Guilt Presented In Macbeth

...THEMES OF GUILT – MACBETH In the story of Macbeth, guilt is an important theme due to the fact that it unstiffens Macbeth’s ambition and coldness. His brutality is balanced by his guilt, a trait that enables the audience to identify with Macbeth throughout the play despite his oppressiveness. MACBETH AND LADY MACBETH: The two main characters who experience extreme feelings of guilt throughout the play are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth’s guilt is caused by the ghosts of those who he murdered and of the consequences that follow their murders. For example, Macbeth is visited by the ghost of Banquo, who he murdered to protect his secret. The apparition embodies Macbeth’s guilt and therefore causes Macbeth to nearly reveal the truth about King Duncan’s murder. Macbeth’s guilt prevents him from enjoying his gain of royalty but it does not stop him from committing more than 1 murders. This perhaps indicates a lack of morality, which is Macbeth’s key character flaw. Lady Macbeth on the overhand is driven crazy from the adrenaline of watching her husband commit such murders and is the force behind his actions. Unlike Macbeth’s...

Macbeth

...How does Shakespeare present Macbeth and his wife as they commit regicide? In this scene Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are committing regicide and attempting to frame it on Duncan’s chamberlains. Throughout the scene Shakespeare uses different techniques to convey and present to the audience the contrasting personalities of the two characters and the reactions as their guilty consciences take control. Shakespeare uses the idea of sleep to represent Macbeth’s guilty conscience. Macbeth describes sleep as being ‘sore labour’s bath’ this suggests that he sees sleep as being a cleanser of the soul after a hard day but feels guilty over the regicide and believes that only ‘The innocent sleep’. The use of a semantic field of food ‘second course…life’s feast’ also supports the idea of sleep being beautiful and soothing. A feeling that neither Lady Macbeth nor Macbeth are expected to feel and experience due to their crime. Soliloquies throughout the scene engage the audience and allow them to understand the emotions of the particular character. Defying the laws of physics, Lady Macbeth compares her feelings to the drunken chamberlains in ‘what hath quench’d them, hath given me fire.’ This implies that what has caused the chamberlains to be drunk has filled her with power. The contrasts of Macbeth’s feelings throughout the scene are also conveyed later on during his own soliloquy when he says ‘every noise appals me.’ His conscience is obviously weighing on his mind and is causing him to...

Comparison Essay

...between two characters of two unique novels cannot be more profoundly illustrated than comparing that of the character of Lady Macbeth authored by William Shakespeare within the book Macbeth to that character of Abigail authored by Arthur Miller within the book the Crucible. .......... The act of manipulation overwhelms the mindset of Lady Macbeth and Abigail. Although, how they choose to react to such a feeling is where individuality from one another occurs. The concept of Macbeth revolves around Lady Macbeth corrupting her husband’s mental stability and convincing him to commit a murder. She does so by questioning his manhood and referring to him as a coward. “[He] is too full o’ the milk of human kindness” (I.ii.16). Lady Macbeth is worried that he is not strong enough to perform such a task, so she manipulates him by telling Macbeth how far she will go if it is necessary. “While [the baby] was smiling in my face, / have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums/ and dash’d the brains out” (I.VII.56-58). With such ideas of murdering someone and manipulating someone else, only for self gain, does not come without the feeling of remorse. “What need we fear who/ knows it, when none can call our power to account? / yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?” (V.i.36-39). The manipulation of Lady Macbeth’s husband leaves her feeling guilty to a point where it leads her to her own demise. Abigail also manipulates others for her own personal gain, as she...

How Guilt Is Portrayed in Macbeth and to Kill a Mockingbird

...How Guilt is Portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird and Macbeth In 1623 William Shakespeare wrote his play Macbeth, 337 years later Harper Lee wrote her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Although the texts were written in entirely different eras and settings, both texts are similar in the theme of guilt. Guilt is a self-critical emotion that humans feel that compromises their sense of moral integrity. Guilt allows whoever is feeling this emotion to know that they have wronged another person or themselves and gone against their sense of responsibility or moral standards. In both Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the lead villains follow parallel paths with regard to their guilt, undertaking ill advised courses of actions which result not only in the undoing of the women in their lives, but also ultimately their own demise. Early on in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth the lead character Macbeth is at war with himself over what the correct course of action is, burdened by the Weird Sisters’ stating “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!” (I.iii.51), which leaves Shakespeare with the choice of taking Macbeth down the path of letting life play it’s course or taking matters into his own hands. Macbeth ultimately chooses to take matters into his own hands and kills King Duncan. This allows the play to follow the action plan of Macbeth instantly becoming king of Scotland, causing him to spend the rest of the play covering up his tracks. Similarly, in Harper...

Macbeth Questions

...not be king, his sons will be and that in turn poses a threat to Macbeth and soon, his kingship. Because the witches’ prophecy about Macbeth becoming king came true, he questions whether they were going to be right about Banquo and his legacy. Although, Macbeth in this scene is too worried, he does not realize that he was the one who fundamentally caused the series of events to occur after killing King Duncan. Banquo might decide to keep the information he learned from the witches to himself because if he spoke up people might think that he was a part of Kind Duncan’s murder, because they may believe that he did this just to become king. Also, he probably does not want to sabotage his chances of his sons becoming kings if someone else finds out. 2. Macbeth might be curious about where Banquo is going because he wants to keep an eye on Banquo for two reasons. One reason being that he wants to kill him so that his sons are not the reason that he loses his thrown. He uses this as a safety mechanism and later on in the act we find out that Macbeth hires three murders to kill Banquo in order to carry out his plan of staying king. He also wants to keep an eye on Banquo so that way he does not find out that he was the one who killed King Duncan for the thrown. Banquo may have already been suspicious of the murder because he was with Macbeth and heard the witches’ prophecies. 3. The “bloody cousins” as referred to Macbeth in line 29 are Duncan’s sons. They are the ones that the blame...

Explore the Effects Shakespeare Was Trying to Achieve by Creating a Character Like Lady Macbeth. What Reactions Might the Reader Have of Lady Macbeth?

...by creating a character like Lady Macbeth. What reactions might the reader have of Lady Macbeth? Shakespeare portrayed Lady Macbeth in many ways in different situations. However, readers would believe her to be manipulative, scheming, deceptive, ruthless and going down the path of evil for power and position overall. Creating the character Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare has made her the catalyst, (including the witches) as Macbeths evildoings and leading towards the downfall of him and herself. He has made her a very significant part of the play. This is because she is always with Macbeth telling him what she thinks he should do, and structuring the deed. When he calls off the whole plan of killing Duncan therefore not gaining full power, Lady Macbeth has the confidence to call her husband a coward and ridicule his masculinity in order to persuade him to commit the murder. She challenges his feelings of guilt and pity for Duncan and replaces them with malicious and spiteful feelings. This shows Lady Macbeth can go to extremes as she has the courage to question his coward-ness and masculinity. The readers can admire or look down on her ruthlessness and her power in the relationship. Also her persuasive skills. Not only taunting him, but using her femininity to her advantage as she sexually touches him while persuading him. Shakespeare has achieved to make Lady Macbeth unique as most wives wouldn’t argue with their husbands however Lady Macbeth did therefore leading to self-destruction...

Macbeth Literary Essay

...Macbeth Literary Essay Submitted By: Zachary McGregor May 1st, 2012 I believe that Macbeth is fully responsible for his own destiny because whether or not it was fated, he still chose to do everything he did. We obviously know that Macbeth made some pretty bad decisions over the course of the play. He should be held responsible and forced to pay the consequences of his actions for the following reasons. We know that Macbeth still had the choice of whether or not to murder Duncan, although he was encouraged by the witches’ prophesies and Lady Macbeth he didn’t really have to go through with the murder. We also know that the crimes Macbeth commits are becoming increasingly sinister and evil, as he continues to do these terrible deeds it becomes easier and easier for him to commit them. Finally, Macbeth acknowledges his guilt for the crimes he commits and is therefore fully responsible for his actions. It seems that the witches’ predictions insinuate Macbeth’s desire to become king, however, no one actually forces him to kill Duncan. Even though Macbeth’s decision was most certainly influenced by the witches’ prophesies and Lady Macbeth, he still made the final choice regarding the murder of Duncan which is wrong. Macbeth’s ambition causes him to question his loyalty to the king after hearing the witches’ prophesies. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my shingle state of man that...

Macbeth

...Acton once said, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Macbeth by William Shakespeare is the tragic story about the kind of destruction ambition and the struggle for power can cause. Even the noblest of people are corrupted by the idea of power and will do anything to achieve it. Symbolism, irony, foil, theme, and imagery are some of the literary elements and techniques Shakespeare uses to portray Macbeth, the protagonist, as a greedy tyrant willing to sacrifice all others to accomplish his goals. Shakespeare not only represents Macbeth as the protagonist, but also as an antagonist to himself and others in the play. The author characterizes Macbeth at first as an honorable man willing to fight for the freedom of his kingdom. Shakespeare foreshadows to the reader a developing change within Macbeth’s character after his encounter with the Weird Sisters. His convene with the witches arouses in Macbeth the idea of becoming king. The motivation for Macbeth to become king spurs from the prophecies told by the witches in the beginning acts of the play, which were evidently coming true as he gained the title “Thane of Cawdor” as the prophecy stated. Below the surface Macbeth is a melting pot of emotions, which engaged his character in the idea of becoming a supreme ruler undoubtedly causing him to commit shameless acts. The character of Macbeth is usually described as being flawed by ambition, but this interpretation is not...

Macbeth and Gladiator

...text 'Macbeth' and in the film 'Gladiator' directed by Ridley Scott and how it can lead to one's downfall. Macbeth is shown as the "noble" hero by the King after slaying the Thane of Cawdor and claiming victory in the war for Scotland, while Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' portrays Maximus as the "noble" hero but still not comparing to Macbeth like Commodus does in the film.   Shakespeare effectively focuses on the cynical repercussions of ambition in 'Macbeth' and how it can lead to one's failure. Macbeth is shown as a wellborn protagonist after being regarded as "Noble Macbeth" by the King of Scotland, King Duncan after slaying the Thane of Cawdor and winning the war for his country. This starts to show the effects of Shakespeare's Aristotelian Tragedy where the tragic hero is established.   Macbeth's ambition begins after he and Banquo are told their fates by prophesising witches. "All hail, Macbeth, that shall be king hereafter". This quote is indicated by one of the witches that starts to show the beginning of the end for Macbeth. The behaviour and attitudes of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth leading up to the murder of King Duncan are completely contrasted. Macbeth expresses great reluctance to act, convincing himself that the murder is unjustified, and will bring him great troubles, grief and negative consequences. "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition". Macbeth says this to Lady Macbeth to show his hesitancy towards this act. Lady Macbeth on...

Macbeth 3.4

...Anas Javaid Macbeth Act 3 Scene 4 Director’s Notes The movie production will be based on the time period that Shakespeare had originally intended, during 11th century Scotland. It will be inside of a type of castle you’d expect during for a time period and setting like this, with rows of tables as long as the hall. The back wall has long red-and-gold tapestry hanging down from the ceiling, complimenting the kingly throne made out of pure gold with a red seat. The expensive-looking tables are laden with decoration and have full course meals laid out on them. Macbeth is donning a heavy purple gown accompanied by a white cloak, with a golden crown sitting atop his head. The Lady Macbeth is sat beside him in a beautiful red dress. All of the lords and ladies are wearing their best outfits for this occasion. The room is lit entirely by candles, and the hall has a warm, but slightly eerie, feeling to it. While the murderers are speaking with Macbeth, everything in the background seems perfectly normal, as people continue to have a good time and feast on the food at their tables. When the murderers inform Macbeth that Fleance escaped, a look of horror and sudden realization comes upon Macbeth’s face as he realized the prophecy of Banquo’s sons becoming king will hold true, and there is nothing he can do. After the murderers take their leave, business continues as usual, besides Macbeth, who is now disturbed at the thought of Fleance overthrowing Macbeth. However, the nature of the scene...

...Macbeth: Macbeth - A Human To A Killer      In Shakespeare's play Macbeth the character Macbeth proves to be somewhat dynamic in his human representation. He starts off as being very human; he is actually a war-hero. However the seed of change is planted right away when he meets the witches and they tell him their prophecy of him becoming king. This makes Macbeth ambitious, and it leads to his demise. Once he kills Duncan the change rapidly begins to accelerate. By the end of the play, and Macbeth's killing spree, his transformation is complete and all of his human thoughts and feelings are gone. Macbeth changes from being a great individual to the focus of everyone's fear and anger, because he loses his human characteristics of conscience and remorse.      As the play starts Macbeth is very human; he has feelings and friends and he is a war-hero. As time elapses, he begins to change into a ruthless killer, "a tyrant". Once he meets the witches and learns he will become king he begins to plot and think murderously. When he arrived at a plot to kill Duncan, and told Lady Macbeth, he realized it was the only way. However, in doing this he made a lot of people suspicious. ...Charlotte Higgs LVs Macbeth Essay Plan For my introduction I’m going to say how I’m going to show the character of Macbeth and explain why many people have mixed feelings about him. I am then going to discuss how I’m going to lay out the essay by exploring the different aspects to him, such as being brave, ambitious and loving. I will then say that I will conclude the essay by explaining the mixed feelings about him. Brave * For the first paragraph I will mostly be discussing the conversation between the captain and Duncan in Act 1 Scene 2. * I will point out important phrases to show that he is brave and why. * I will also mention about how other characters think of him at the beginning of the play and that overall it is very positive which makes the audience think positively towards him. * I will also discuss at this point his attitudes towards the witches and mention that most people would be scared of them and not intrigued by them. (Act 1 scene 3) * I will also point out clear lines that show his attitude towards them. * I then plan to link this to Macbeth being ambitious. Ambitious * I will then continue the witch scene and point out key lines that show Macbeth’s ambitious side. * I believe at this point it is important to show the contrast of character between Macbeth and Banquo, about how Banquo is very sceptical but Macbeth is entranced by a good offer and is completely spell bound by what the witches have said to him and of his...

Metaphorical Masks In Macbeth

...William Shakespeare in his well-known play The Tragedy of Macbeth, written in 1606, uses various types of metaphorical masks. Shakespeare was inspired to write the play after reading a book titled, Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland, about the real-life Macbeth. Just like the actual King Macbeth, The Tragedy of Macbeth takes place in Scotland. Metaphorical masks are imaginary shields used to hide what is actually taking place. Although there are many types of masking throughout the tragedy, the three most predominant types are the masking of feelings, guilt, and murder. The masking of feelings is prevalent throughout the dialogue of Macbeth. For instance, in Act I, scene 5, Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to "[...] Look th' innocent...

Screen Macbeth

...time looking for available spaces so that the other viewers can be seated. While they were doing this, I was able to take a good look at the theatre and evaluate it before the lights were turned off. The stage was one of a kind. I watched quite a lot of plays and so far, “Screen Macbeth” had the most unique structure. In the other plays I watched, the stage was just the traditional stage. It was at the front, it is positioned a little lower than the seats of the audience, and the audience were facing the same side. However, “Screen Macbeth” had a platform at the center of the audience. The audience from opposite sides of the theatre were facing each other. It is not the typical four-cornered platform though. It was like a catwalk with four directions. And I think that structure of the stage helped me understand the play even more because I can see the actors’ and actresses’ expressions up-close and it somehow made me feel what emotions the characters were experiencing. The lights were a bit dark. However, with a tragic plot such as Macbeth, dim lighting system is the most appropriate. Fear is one of the feelings emphasized in the play and with the dusky atmosphere in the theatre, I guess the feeling was conveyed perfectly to the audience. The sounds system was great. I guess that is just one of the advantages of a small theatre. The actors and actresses were not even using microphones and yet, their voices can be heard pretty well anywhere in the theatre. And not using microphone...
