...Four main target of governments: Low unemployment – lots of people in work Low and steady inflation – prices and wages fairly stable ← Steady and sustainable economic growth (%change in GDP) – the economy to grow a little bit each year A positive balance of payments – to export more than we import Two other possible: ← To reduce inequality in the country – to redistribute income and wealth in order to help the poor To protect the environment – to avoid pollution and congestion What is Monetary Policy? Monetary Policy involves changes in the base rate of interest to influence the rate of growth of aggregate demand, the money supply and ultimately price inflation. Monetarist economists believe that monetary policy is a more powerful weapon than fiscal policy in controlling inflation. Monetary policy also involves changes in the value of the exchange rate since fluctuations in the currency also impact on macroeconomic activity (incomes, output and prices) Changes in short term interest rates affect the spending and savings behaviour of households and businesses over time and therefore feed through the circular flow of income and spending. The transmission mechanism of monetary policy works with variable time lags depending on the interest elasticity of demand for different goods and services – e.g. the demand for interest-sensitive consumer goods and services bought on credit or the demand for capital investment from private sector businesses. Because...

...Homework Practice Questions: Microeconomics/Macroeconomics The following questions are for homework practice only. They are to be answered in detail, so it can be used for practice and future reference. 1. Suppose you are hired to manage a small manufacturing facility that produces Widgets. (a.) You know from data collected on the Widget Market that market demand and market supply have both increased recently. As manager of the facility, what decisions should you make regarding production levels and pricing for your Widget facility? The increase in supply is likely the result of the increased demand, which created economic profit for firms because of higher prices. Depending on whether the increase in supply has expanded sufficiently to causes prices to fall and economic profits to disappear, your firm could profit by expanding output and increasing prices. This can be determined by seeing if prices are higher than they were before the increase in demand. The price per unit tells you the marginal revenue per unit sold. Output decisions should then be based on setting output so that marginal cost is equal to marginal revenue. In this case, the manager would increase the supply and price; but is should increase both in a controlled environment so that the total revenue profits does not drop (for example, raising price beyond a certain price might decrease the demand thus reducing overall profit) Also, the supply should be increased so that Marginal Cost< Marginal...

...outside the specified country is not included the country’s GDP. GDP is usually used as an indicator of an economy’s health and it also measure a country’s standard of living. GDP is often calculated quarterly and yearly and is used as a comparison to the previous quarter or year. GDP is composed of overall consumption of the country, government spending, investments and net exports (exports – imports). The formula for calculating is GDP = C + I+ G + (X-M). b).Distinguish between real gross domestic product and nominal gross domestic product. Nominal Gross Domestic Product is a monetary measure of the value of finished goods and services produced for a period of time (quarterly or annually). Nominal GDP does take inflation into consideration. Real Gross Domestic Product calculates the value of economic productivity in a given year accustomed for changes in price. It takes into consideration inflation before giving results. Real GDP is very different from Nominal GDP. This is proven below: 1. Nominal GDP does take inflation or deflation into consideration in its calculation whereas Real GDP is obtained only after including the effect of inflation or deflation. 2. Nominal GDP is calculated at current prices whereas Real GDP is calculated on a base year. 3. Real GDP shows the actual picture of economic growth of the country, which is not with the case of Nominal GDP. c).Describe three different ways that national income is measured and a difficulty associated...

...------------------------------------------------- FAIRMODEL Group Project Question #1: The Big One The U.S. Economy is impacted by many factors. Debates have been waged over various causes or potential results of macroeconomic changes in the components of the economy. Using the Fairmodel tool, we can use a comprehensive computer model to predict the impact of a “shock” to the economy. We can analyze the impact of this “shock” on overall Real GDP (Aggregate Expenditure) as well as the impact upon the individual components that make up GDP (i.e. other macroeconomic components and indicators such as bond rates, money supply, etc.) For this analysis, we have created two models of the U.S. economy and will look specifically at the short run case (the first 5 - 8 quarters spanning 2012-2013). First, we created a “baseline” model which assumed that no change in aggregate expenditures occurred. Next, we created a model with a shock to the economy starting in the first quarter of 2012 by reducing state and local government purchases (COS) by $20 billion per quarter. By comparing the resulting data sets for these two scenarios across several variables, we can predict the impact that the “shock” to government spending would have on both the overall economy and the specific components of GDP. The reduction in state and local government spending was spurred by an overall reduction in tax collections. The government decided to reduce spending as a result. What is not initially...

Keynesian economics is a macroeconomic theory developed by John Maynard Keynes, who is a British economist. According to Keynesian theory, government intervention plays an important role in the economy, and focuses on short-term goals. It is used mostly in times of recession, inflation, unemployment to stabilize the business cycle, therefore active government policy is required and government spending is a good way to put money back into the GDP. (hupii.com) Keynes is famous for his simple explanation for the cause of the Great Depression during the 1930s. His idea was based on a circular flow of money, which states that when spending increases in an economy, earnings will also increase, and the outcome it will lead to even more spending and earnings (economic growth). His ideas had led to a revolution in economic thought. (martinfrost.ws) During the period of World War 2, United States president has spent enormously huge on defence which has that helped revive the U.S economy. Besides...

...Macroeconomy Chapter 6: * Central Park contained one of the “Hoovervilles” that had sprung up all across America as a result of a catastrophic economic slump in 1929. (The Great Depression) * During the time of Great Depression, microeconomics was a well-developed branch of economics, but macroeconomics was not. * In the 1930’s, there were no expanding industries; everything was headed downward. * Microeconomics focuses on how decisions are made by individuals and firms and the consequences of those decisions; Macroeconomics examines the overall behavior of the economy—how the actions of all the individuals and firms in the economy interact to produce a particular economy-wide level of economic performance. * Many thousands or millions of individual actions compound upon one another to produce an outcome that isn’t simply the sum of those individual actions. (rubber-necking traffic jam example) * Paradox of thrift: when families and businesses are worried about the possibility of economic hard times, they prepare by cutting their spending. This reduction in spending depresses the economy as consumers spend less and businesses react by laying off workers. As a result, families and businesses may end up worse off than it they hadn’t cut their spending. * The flip-side is also true; seemingly profligate behavior leads to good times for all * Before 1930’s, economists regarded the economy as self-regulating: unemployment would...

...A-LEVEL ECONOMICS ECON4/Unit 4: Mark scheme 2140 June 2014 Version 1.0 Final The National and International Economy Mark schemes are prepared by the Lead Assessment Writer and considered, together with the relevant questions, by a panel of subject teachers. This mark scheme includes any amendments made at the standardisation events which all associates participate in and is the scheme which was used by them in this examination. The standardisation process ensures that the mark scheme covers the students’ responses to questions and that every associate understands and applies it in the same correct way. As preparation for standardisation each associate analyses a number of students’ scripts: alternative answers not already covered by the mark scheme are discussed and legislated for. If, after the standardisation process, associates encounter unusual answers which have not been raised they are required to refer these to the Lead Assessment Writer. It must be stressed that a mark scheme is a working document, in many cases further developed and expanded on the basis of students’ reactions to a particular paper. Assumptions about future mark schemes on the basis of one year’s document should be avoided; whilst the guiding principles of assessment remain constant, details will change, depending on the content of a particular examination paper. Further copies of this Mark Scheme are available from aqa.org.uk Copyright © 2014 AQA and its licensors. All...

With an increase in demand and an increase in supply, P* will be indeterminate. Q* will definitely increase. The decisions to be made follow the changes in Q* and P*. Production levels should be increased. The price of the Widgets should remain the same. (b.) ANS. Here the determinant of demand is an increase in the price of a substitute good. This will cause an increase in demand. The determinant of supply is an increase in costs. This will cause a decrease in supply. Now the change in Q* is indeterminate, and P* will definitely go up. ...

...A Meta-Analysis of the Economic Impacts of Climate Change Policy in the United States Adam Rose* and Noah Dormady** This paper provides a meta-analysis of a broad set of recent studies of the economic impacts of climate change mitigation policies. It evaluates the infiuences of the impacts of causal factors, key economic assumptions and macroeconomic linkages on the outcome of these studies. A quantité regression analysis is also performed on the meta sample, to evaluate the robustness of those key factors throughout the full range of macro findings. Results of these analyses suggest that study results are strongly driven by data inputs, economic assumptions and modeling approaches. However, they are sometimes affected in counterintuitive ways. 1. INTRODUCTION The macroeconomic impacts of climate change mitigation policies are controversial among both scholars and the policy-making community. Results range from predictions of severe economic harm to significant overall economic gains. Given the unresolved nature of this debate, this paper seeks to shed light on it by evaluating a wide range of macroeconomic studies through a metaanalytic approach. Meta-analysis is a method for evaluating a cross-section of studies on a given topic, and evaluating the impacts of assumptions, input variables and modeling approaches on the overall findings of the studies. In essence, meta-analysis is a study of studies (Borenstein et al., 2009; Lipsey and Wilson 2001). The Energy...

First of all, monetary policy is a deep sea to swim through. Though Bangladesh practices and implements a limited number of instruments, the mix is always complex to grab the main idea behind it. Structured data is hard to collect from the departments of Bangladesh Bank, so complex calculations and data analysis is deliberately avoided.
