...Envir. Ethics 2 Over the years the environment in which we live has suffered immensely. All of our resource systems are in crisis because of our over consumerism, lack of responsibility and lack of knowledge. We use too many resources which is undermining the planets ability for people to live here. Everyone should educate themselves of the state of the environment and some of the everyday changes that each one can do to do our part in saving the planet. We have a moral responsibility to do so for our children and future generations. Although recycling is great (and everyone should be doing it)….what really needs to happen to create a more sustainable society, is for us to reduce the amount of materials that we produce in the first place. There is a pyramid (like the Food Pyramid) (Environmental Science 8th edition, Daniel D. Chiras, 2009, Jones and Bartlett, Publishers Chapter 23 “Hazardous and Solid Wastes: Sustainable Solutions) for solid waste management and it goes like this: Reduction (the top of the pyramid) - not producing materials that generate the waste in the first place. We don’t need all the materials we have. Another good example is packaging waste. Think of how much packaging many of our products come in- lunchables for example, come in a cardboard box and then a sealed plastic tray and then the crackers and other parts are individually wrapped too. Reuse-reusing and repurposing the wastes. Instead of buying brand new why not shop at Goodwill...

...There is massive amounts of waste being thrown into landfills, much of what can be recycled or composted. Landfills are running out of space. Statistics show that ninety percent of waste in landfills was deposited there in the mid 1980’s. (Master Composter) In 1989 Americans disposed of 3.5 pounds of solid waste per day. (Master Composter) Estimates show that every Sunday, more than 500,000 trees are used to produce eighty eight percent of newspapers, much which is not recycled. (Master Composter) Estimates show that American’s throw away enough office paper to build a twelve foot high wall from Los Angeles, California to New York City. (Master Composter) 2.5 million plastics bottles per hour are used by Americans in which only a small percentage is recycled. (Master Composter) There is enough iron and steel thrown out to supply all of America’s auto markets and enough aluminum to rebuild the entire air fleet every three months. (Master Composter) Americans dispose 24 million tons of leaves and grass clippings every way, which by the way can be composted. (Master Composter) Much of this space taken up could be limited if everyone would just recycle what can be recycled and compost what can be composted. Composting in Vermont is making substantial headway since the passing of the Universal Recycling Law which calls for all food scraps to be out of trash by July, 1, 2020. Many companies have already started to compost to adhere to new regulations put into place. Wayside restaurant...

...| Green Bank Report: Finding the best green banking deals and rates * Home * Eco-Friendly Banking * iPhone * Green Bank Deals * Credit Cards * Savings Rates * Checking Accounts * CD Rates What is the Meaning of Green Banking? Posted by Clark Schultz on Friday, September 10, 2010 · Leave a Comment Defining green banking is relatively easy. It means promoting environmental-friendly practices and reducing your carbon footprint from your banking activities. This comes in many forms. Using online banking instead of branch banking. Paying bills online instead of mailing them. Opening up CDs and money market accounts at online banks, instead of large multi-branch banks. Or finding the local bank in your area that is taking the biggest steps to support local green initiatives. Any combination of the above personal banking practices can help the environment. So this leads to the question, which banks are green. In general, online banks and smaller community banks have better track record than larger banks. For instance, take a look at the banks that British Petroleum has been reported to seek lines of credit from this past summer after the oil spill. Goldman Sachs (GS) Citigroup (C) JP Morgan (JPM) Bank of America (BAC) These banks have at least one thing in common. That is, they are all large billion-dollar asset banks. They are also in the group of banks that received TARP money in the government bank bailout program. In would seem common...

...How to Prevent Pollution “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat."- Marianne Williamson Pollution prevention is an exceptionally major global concern because of the harmful effects of pollution on the person’s health and on the environment. Environmental pollution comes in various forms, such as: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. Everyone is a stakeholder as we are all inhabitants of this one and only mother earth. Each person has something to contribute to advance an effective pollution prevention awareness initiative. Environmental protection is caring for us, loving our children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. "If we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." You and I should therefore accept personal responsibility for the success of the environmental protection programs of our respective community by cooperating and actively participating in making the atmosphere pollution free. Help stop pollution today. Although on an individual basis we can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment, efficient control can be best institutionalized through legislation. Thus, most countries have already addressed the issue by passing some form of pollution prevention measures. Averting the onset of pollution in any area, i.e. be it on air, water or land, could be the start and the simplest preventive solution to the problem. This calls for a conscientious effort to adopt...

...Assessment 1 Develop workplace sustainability Questions What are the sustainability issues? Unsustainable activities have led to changes in our environment, or have been identified as having the potential to lead to future changes. The types of changes that are occurring or are predicted to occur form the key issues for sustainability. The following Table 1 provides a summary of the key issues. They are related to changes to the physical and cultural (being the way we live) environments, which in turn relate to the economic environment. What does sustainability mean? Every day we hear the term ‘sustainable’ or ‘sustainability’ being used to describe a large number of issues and news items. There is the ‘sustainable economy’, ‘sustainable agriculture’, ‘economically sustainable’, ‘the need to be sustainable’, ‘sustainable work practices’ and ‘sustainable water supply’ to name a few. The Brundtland Report, Our Common Future, is seen by many as one of the first global reports to address sustainable development. This report defined sustainable development as: “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Brundtland (1987) National strategy for ecologically sustainable development Sustainable Development is defined by the Australian Government’s National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development as: “…using, conserving and enhancing the community’s resources...

...5780 GREEN MARKETING – CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DR.V.MOHANASUNDARAM* *Professor and Head, Vivekanandha Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women, Tiruchengode – 637205 Tamilnadu. INTRODUCTION Although environmental issues influence all human activities, few academic disciplines have integrated green issues into their literature. As society becomes more concerned with the natural environment, businesses have begun to modify their behavior in an attempt to address society's "new" concerns. Some businesses have been quick to accept concepts like environmental management systems and waste minimization, and have integrated environmental issues into all organizational activities. One business area where environmental issues have received a great deal of discussion in the popular and professional press is marketing. Terms like "Green Marketing" and "Environmental Marketing" appear frequently in the popular press. Many governments around the world have become so concerned about green marketing activities that they have attempted to regulate them. One of the biggest problems with the green marketing area is that there has been little attempt to academically examine environmental or green marketing. This paper attempts 1) To introduce the terms and concepts of green marketing; 2) To discuss why going green is important; 3) To know why the manufacturers and marketers launch eco-friendly products 3) To examine some of the reason that organizations are adopting a green marketing...

Both economic development and protection of the environment are critical for sustainable development. The environment is not an isolated concern but cuts across all sectors. Also economic policies impact at multiple levels and across sectors. Therefore there is a strong need to merge/integrate environmental concerns into economic decision making processes in order to provide a more rational basis for decisions. 2. Such integration facilitates a holistic view on critical issues. It enables analysis of complementary and conflicting issues across a number of sectors, providing, in the process, for a better understanding by all parties. It can help prevent the cross-sectoral impacts of policies and programmes which are detrimental to the environment. 3. Integration enlarges the choices for policy makers by bringing into the matrix of decision making a wider mix of likely scenarios. Integration is a process/pathway towards meeting the objectives...

...Earth is yours. Save it! The Earth is yours. Save it! Name : Sanelisiwe Gomomo Laetitia Ngalula Aviwe Janeth Viwe Introduction What does it mean to Go Green? Going Green means that you have adopted certain practices and habits that reduce your overall impact on the environment. These practices may include anything from recycling, reducing your energy usage, using public transportation, to buying local products. Going green is quite important to the environment as well as our health. We will be able to breathe a little easier with less pollution in the air. Consider for a moment that a plastic soda bottle takes over 450 years to decompose, and that beer cans take 200 to 500 years to decompose. If these things are not recycled, or if a process isn't found to speed up decomposition, then we're going to wind up living in our own landfills. People all around the world consume billions of bottles and cans each and every single year, without a method to get rid of these items, our great grandchildren will still be seeing those same bottles and cans around, that alone is an important reason to go green. The Going Green Campaign is to ensure the earth will be a better place to live in future. I. INFORMATION ABOUT THE SERVICE The Going Green Campaign has been created to raise the awareness on the environment hazards we are facing today. There are many ways we can save our earth and prevent it from being destroyed. Our earth has lost a massive ideal environment for both...

...to be an ad about energy saving light bulbs, recycling, or green materials (Brown). So the real question is, what is recycling? Growing up in America we are all familiar with the famous EPA phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. The third component Recycling, is a key practice of reusing and reducing items. Recycling takes materials from the waste stream, like used materials or scrap and puts them back into the manufacturing stream, which is the production of new products or materials. In many parts of the world, communities have already embraced the idea of recycling. If used products are disposed of in an appropriate way the process of recycling has been set in motion One of the main reasons we recycle is for preserving our world for future generations. The items we throw out take energy to make, so many of the items are not biodegradable. They take centuries to break down. We produce so much waste that we are running out of space to bury it or dispose of it without contaminating the environment. Preserving our environment is not just some wild conspiracy theory. Almost everything we see around us can be recycled. Each piece of material we recycle makes a positive impact on the environment. Recycling regulations in countries, states, and even local community vary. You need to know what can be recycled. Practically everything in a modern household can be recycled like paper, plastic, glass, metals, and wood scrap. More items are added to the list of what can be recycled as our...

...The facts of the case • Jonica Gunson: Environment Compliance Manager for a small plastics manufacturing company • New Technology: Can reduce the level of toxins that is being released from the back of their factory into the lake • Lakes current emission levels: Within legal standards • Scientific Evidence: If the toxins continue the lake is at risk of being permanently polluted • Environmental Compliance budget: Tight • Dilemma: Should the company install the new technology? Questions for Discussion: 1. What motives would the company have to install the new technology? The new technology will make the company environmentally friendly. It could prevent the government policy from happening which would ultimately lead to loss of time and money through the monthly emission level reports. Due to environmental ethics, in this case the possibility of harmful fish for human consumption, this new technology could mean the start of green manufacturing by the company. Green manufacturing is meant to reduce pollution and waste by minimizing natural resource use, recycling and reusing what was considered waste, and reducing emissions. The new technology reduces emission levels therefore it can be considered as part of green manufacturing. A study conducted by Melnyk, Sroufe, and R. Calantone (2012) concluded that green manufacturing combined with green marketing has increased companies profits. Due to this the new technology, that can reduce toxin emission, can become very beneficial...
